That's what happens when Democrats in Massachusetts don't turn out--the Republican turnout is the better turnout. That's a given.

Registered Democrats in Massachusetts outnumber registered Republicans by better than 3 to 1. And those registered "unenrolled" outnumber both the Republicans and the Democrats. However, most of the unenrolled usually vote Democratic. Massachusetts voting history tells you that.

There was a a turnout of over 70% in November 2008 and around 50% today. The Republicans had a phenomenal turnout, for them, today. That's a variance of over 20%. So, who stayed home today? Who made up that 20%. Obviously, the Democrats and maybe also some of the unenrolled who usually vote Democratic.

The real question is, why did they stay home. I maintain it was motivation, not weather, because bad weather did not keep them home in 2004.
