I thought the identification would normally take place before the postmortem
in a "missing person" case. More so in this case as the body was found lying
face down (i.e., there will be a lot of examination of the facial tissues to
find out if he died lying down in the place where he was found).

Or can they do that sort of examination without too many cuts these days?

Still, at least it gains enough time to get the story straight ...
