5:48 Gaddafi has been trying to strike fear in the tribes in central Libya that live in Sirt by saying that the revolutionaries will seek revenge and will be hostile towards them. It is important to stress from this blog that the revolutionaries have no such desire. The revolutionaries want to oust the oppressive regime, the head of which is Gaddafi.

16:00 Translated by us – An evocation for support from Az Zawiya to the people of Zintan: May Glod bless the spirt of struggle in you, O descendants of heroes. Here, the situation has tightened around us and the horrors have intensified. We do not ask food for the children and neither do we need money. Rather, we ask God first then you for support of men. So rise to support your brothers in God and please do not let us down like our neighbours have, and God is the ultimate assister.

15. 2 bad they won't play recordings of what he said/did in last years for #G

When these uprisings started, AJE had a crack team anchoring. I noticed halfway through Egypt that new anchors with flawless English accents came on and interviews they conducted were suspect in what they were trying to get callers to say (ex, Mubarak is gone, what more do you want, is this worth your life).

So now they're gonna give McCain a platform? I feel sick.

Emir of Qatar hated Mubarak and Gaddafi over a row to get Gaza freed. They both boycotted his summit and things got very personal. But the Emir is also facing some unrest in Qatar now. I think they're backtracking a bit to prevent total chaos. Another important thing is that in the Arab world, Al Jazeera is considered pretty right wing.

Qatar just signed an agreement 2 days ago w\ Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism together. I'll try to find that information for you.

But they're (AJ) the ones with the cameras and the reach. For them, Arab hegemony yes, financial upsets no. This is a sloppy nutshell of my opinion.

McCain?

BREAKING: Full update on Az Zawiya right now - #feb17 #libya - libyafeb17.com/2011/03/breaki…
10 minutes ago

16:23 Al Jazeera Eyewitness has just said that 35 tanks were surrounding Az Zawiya from the coastal road with cars loaded with 14.5mm anti-aircraft guns. The people of Zawiya were able to push them away earlier today.

Az Zawiya is currently being shelled indiscriminately by tanks from all locations

This morning a full scale attack was made on Zawiya. From 7am till 10am. ALL forms of artillery was used. It is being surrounded right now from every direction.

This morning 3 tanks entered the heart of Tripoli, but the guys were able to disable the tanks. In the tanks were african mercenaries and Libyans. We captured some and killed some. The 6 captured came from the following locations: 1 from Al Khums, 1 from Werfalla, 1 from Zawiya, 1 from Zleetin and 2 from African countries.

Food stocks are ok, but people need IV solution(?) for drips. Medical supplies are needed.

Despite the tens of deaths and hundreds of injuries, the morale is extremely high and people have vowed not to leave the streets and to protect their city.

Snipers have taken to the high spots and have been killing people INSIDE their homes. Revolutionaries were able to capture a sniper and he has confessed to everything.

4:35 p.m.- Confirmation of new attack on Zawiya: Al-Jazeera says 35 tanks are approaching from the east.

4:39 p.m.: And an eyewitness in Zawiya has also just told Reuters by phone that Gaddafi tanks are shelling the centre: “The attack has started. I see more than 20 tanks.” A second resident said Gaddafi’s forces were using “tanks and mortars”.

4:45 p.m.: A government soldier manning a checkpoint on the road to Zawiya tells the Associated Press: “We are controlling all the roads in and out of Zawiya. They cannot get out of it and they will not be able to do anything more. We are controlling it and we will control more.”

Gaddafi's billions 'will never be found'
Friday 04 March 2011

The man who tried to teach Colonel Gaddafi's son, Saif, economics tells Channel 4 News the government's moves to seize the dictator's assets are little more than posturing.

The economist once charged with the hopeless task of educating Colonel Gaddafi's “thick” son has accused the Government of being “deliberately disingenuous'” over its efforts to seize the dictator's assets.

Tax evasion campaigner John Christensen has been watching the drama unfold in Libya with more interest than most - one of the key players is an ex-pupil of his.

Mr Christensen, a development economist and former economic adviser to the UK Government who now heads a campaign against offshore banking, added his twist to the story in hisonline blog.

56. That's a great blog. I'm so happy the author quoted "Ozymandias,"
the sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelley that's been running through my head for weeks, ever since the beginning of the Egyptian revolution and continuing through the Libyan revolution. I think I first read this poem when I was 15 or 16, and I'm pretty close to having it memorized at this point. Here it is:

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.

And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

--Percy Bysshe Shelley

Sic semper tyrannis!

Khamis Brigade

The Khamis Brigade (or Khamees' Battalion, etc.) is a special forces brigade of the military of Libya which is loyal to Muammar Gaddafi,<1> the de-facto leader of Libya since 1969. Commanded by Gaddafi's youngest son Khamis Gaddafi, the 32nd Brigade had been called "the most well-trained and well-equipped force in the Libyan military" and "the most important military and security elements of the regime" in leaked U.S. memos. According to former Justice Minister Mustafa Mohamed Abd al-Jalil, each of Gaddafi's sons has an army and can do with it as he pleases <2> During the 2011 Libyan uprising, Gaddafi's sons were stationed at security centers in the east, west, and south of Tripoli.<3> The Khamis Brigade was described as the most elite of three "regime protection units" which together comprise 10,000 men. According to U.S. and European officials, these units are the only forces directly loyal to Gaddafi, whereas regular army units were made up of conscripts were subject to widespread desertion.<4>

During the 2011 Libyan protests, the Khamis Brigade engaged anti-government forces.<1> It was reported by eyewitnesses to be moving into Bengazi, Beyida and several other cities that were foci of anti-government protests early on February 19, 2011 in the company of militias possibly including foreign mercenaries.<5><6> Al Arabiya, citing sources in Bengazi, reported that Khamis Gaddafi had recruited French-speaking mercenaries from sub-Saharan Africa.<7>

Reports of a breakdown in military discipline in the Khamis Brigade were reported through the social media service Twitter, and it was speculated that the end of the Khamis Brigade would precipitate the end of Gaddafi's rule.<8>

On February 24, armored units commanded by Khamis Gaddafi were reported to be moving toward Misurata, Libya's third-largest city and a major port, said to be in the hands of rebels with heavy weapons.<9> Meanwhile, multi-national mercenaries commanded by the group killed scores and injured dozens in Az-Zawiyah, a city symbolic for its resistance to Italian colonization. Local witnesses and speeches by Gaddafi described a chaotic situation with people in civilian clothes fighting one another in the streets. According to former justice minister Mustafa Abdul Jalil, Khamis Gaddafi and two of his brothers were stationed in security centers to the east, west, and south of Tripoli.<10>

Gaddafi Fashion: The Emperor Has Some Crazy Clothes

While a military look offers Gaddafi a "command and control" presence, the weight of the ornamentation can't be good for the life of the fabric. Here, he welcomes guests at a military parade in Tripoli, Libya, on Sept. 1, 2009.

17:08 Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford, at Zawiya’s hospital, says that within the last 10 or 15 minutes government tanks loaded with soldiers have been rolling in and heading towards Martyrs Square in the centre of the city. She says there was a heavy artillery bombardment lasting about 10 minutes. Since then, the sound of gunfire has died down. Casualties have started arriving at the hospital – many with serious injuries, including a young boy of about 10 whose body peppered with bullets, she adds. There are also reports that government forces have been taking away bodies on the streets to minimise the number of known casualties. Clearly a battle is going on for Zawiya, she concludes.

Kadhafi 'still boosted by millions of oil dollars'

Map of main countries to which Libya exports crude oil, based on figures from the International Energy Agency

AFP - Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi's crumbling regime is still being boosted by millions of dollars of crude export revenues despite Western sanctions, the Financial Times reported Saturday.

The business newspaper, citing a senior Western oil official and traders, said that payments for oil exports were finding their way back to Libya's central bank, and possibly into Kadhafi's control.

In the last week of February, when the violence began, Libya exported about 570,000 barrels per day, and shipped about 400,000 barrels of oil over the past week, according to the FT.

The Libyan crude oil shipped over the past fortnight is worth about $770 million (550 million euros) at current price levels, the paper added.

53. My common sense
I understand you do not want foreign troops on Liyba. I absolutely agree that!
However, Libyans need help – maybe not troops; but equipment, tools, advices and means of transportation.
Actually, your enemy is only one person (or one family or one small gang of people). It is neither a city nor a battalion. I would suggest you ask foreign help to target directly at bull eye.
Ask help (from US, UK or even China) for helping to set up a combat team (SWAP type) mainly from Libyans (e.g. 100 people with 15 planes), but get equip with most advance weapons, lease foreign help in terms of pilots and combat fighter jets (or helicopters). Promise the foreign countries to return their equipment (weapons) if they are still in one piece once the mission is over.
You team fly directly to Tripoli and take down Gaddafi (live or death). You may need to bomb along the way before landing (parachuting). It is a dangerous mission and may not return. Keep this combat until success. I believe that will result in less casualty (on both sides) overall.
