Texas State Representative Debbie Riddle has proposed an immigration bill that would make it a felony for anyone to "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" hire illegal immigrants. If this bill were to become law anyone who violates it would be faced with two years in jail and up to a $10,00 fine. The problem with the bill is not just the bill itself the problem with the bill is an exemption within the bill. The exemption is called the laundry exemption. Yes, the exemption is that if you hire an illegal immigrant to clean your house or take care of your yard you are exempt from felony charges.
One could argue that the bill is racist and a kiss up to wealthy individuals. Racists in that as long as people of Mexican decent are cleaning people's floors and planting their flowers everything is okay. The problems come why people of Mexican decent start taking jobs that pay good money and can allow them to have a good life and send their kids to college. A kiss up to the wealthy it that it says do not worry wealthy people we will not make you clean your own home or take care of your own lawn.
