Insight into one of DU's most loved/hated personalities, Glenn Greenwald

Puppy opportunity
By Glenn Greenwald
SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 2011

Two weeks ago, I was driving and saw a dog on the side of the road who was hobbled and barely able to walk. She was entirely unable to use one of her back legs and could barely use the other, causing her to limp horribly as she tried, without much success, to walk up a hill. I was heading home from the grocery store and so happened to have food with me. I stopped the car, grabbed some meat and cheese, walked over to her and fed her, and she ate everything voraciously. It was immediately obvious why she couldn't use her legs: she had horrific, deep wounds on both back legs that looked to be a spreading infection. It was also obvious that she had something very wrong with her right eye -- it was almost entirely clouded over -- and she was very thin but had a bloated stomach.

The temptation to take her home was overwhelming, but because we already have 7 dogs, almost all of whom were found in similar fashion, my partner has issued death threats in the event that I pick up more dogs from the street. So I left her there, tried to tell myself that she at least was fed for a day, came home, and did everything possible to forget about it. But that proved impossible: I kept imagining how the infection would spread on her legs and soon render her entirely unable to walk, which would in turn cause her to starve to death -- in the woods, alone. After 5 minutes, I got in my car and returned to that spot. She had only managed to move a few feet. I picked her up in a blanket and brought her to my car, telling myself -- with what I knew was a delusion -- that I would just take her to the vet, have her legs treated, and then put her back where I found her. Picking up a dog is the point of no return: there's no such thing as "returning them to the street."

I left her at the vet, who said she would thoroughly examine the dog, and was told to return that night to pick her up. When I returned that night, the vet said the leg wounds were of unknown origin but could be treated, she was entirely blind in her right eye, she was full of worms and fleas, she was severely anemic, and -- this is the part that turned out to be quite a shock -- she was pregnant. And not just pregnant, but very pregnant . . . two weeks away or so from giving birth to six puppies. Six. That is presumably what explained the bloated stomach.

When I told my partner earlier that day that I had picked up another dog, he was angry but understanding and surprisingly restrained. But I don't think there's a word that adequately describes his reaction when he learned that I had, in effect, picked up 7 new dogs that day -- instantly doubling the number we have. Suffice to say, finding a home for all of these dogs is now imperative. The dog I picked up, whose pictures are here (more below), is genuinely one of the calmest, sweetest, and most affectionate animals I have ever encountered. Despite living a horrendous life on the street, she's so balanced and peaceful that none of our 7 other dogs had even a moment of hostility or tension with her; they were deeply curious about all her pregnancy smells but she blended right in without any problem.

2. Well, that makes him a winner in my book... but doesn't he live in S. America?
How are folks going to adopt these pups? Who is he targeting?

That said, anyone who reaches out to help like this earns my eternal gratitude and :loveya:

32. One of my cats was an 10-week old feral kitten when she was found by
a truck driver in the warehouse district of Topeka. (There are a lot of feral cats in that area.) He heard mewling from under his truck just before he turned the ignition--thank goodness, or he would have chopped her to pieces!

A friend of mine who worked around kept thekitten in her office alld ay and then there called me that night and asked me to take her. One month earlier I had just adopted a new rescue kitten (8 1/2 months old) after my 19-year-old cat died, so I already had two, but I adopted her and had her spend the next day at the vet's, because she had fleas, worms, and ear mites.

She was just 2.4 poundswhen I got her and was so tiny I thought she was 6-8 weeks old, but once her parasites were gone, she gained weight rapidy, doubling her weight in one week, then tripling her original weight after just 2 weeks with me. Now Tango is a gorgeous, long-haired, fluffy-tailed 6-year-old, 13 1/2 pound tortoise shell Norwegian Forest Cat (which is basically what a Maine Coon Cat is if it isn't from Maine). She was actually about 10 weeks old when I got her, but was just very tiny because of the parasite--and because she was feral, so getting enough food was probnably a sporadic and skimpy sort of thing.

I am guessing her mama left the nest to find food and just never returned, and the little one went out looking for her. I adore her and am very, very glad she came to me back in 2005. My almos 19-year-old cat Lila died just a month ago, but I still have 3 cats, because I adopted an 8-week-old kitten in July of 2010, since Lila was old, so I knew I would probably not have all that much mroe time with her. This kitten needed a home, and I figured I could handle 4 cats for a few months or a year, or for however long my precious old Lila lived. (It turned out to be a year.)

I wouldn't have been able to leave her on the road either. There's some things you just cannot do and ignoring an animal in need is one of them.

Kudos to Glenn. I always knew he was one of the good guys. :loveya:

He won't have any problems adopting out those 6 puppies and momma. She's so precious and I'm sure her babies will be just as sweet.

Let's see, at our house we have one dog, two cats, one turtle, six pullets, four baby squirrels. I might get some death threats if I signed up for one of those puppies.:dilemma:

Glenn is one of my favorite writers and now one of my favorite human beings.

ends up being a 'nitwit' to party loyalists of both parties. That is generally the highest compliment that can be paid to writer whose job is NOT to protect political entities, parties or politicians, which far too much of our media does, but to inform the public.

What is noticeable about Greenwald's detractors is that they never can dispute what he writes about. So they resort to name-calling.

MSM 'journalists' are classified as either 'left' or 'right' and loved or hated by the partisans of both parties.

Greenwald transcends that kind of partisan reaction from the public, and we need all of our media to attract the kind of reaction that he does. Because then we would have a media that reports facts.

Whether you meant to or not, you just paid him the highest compliment as a journalist. He used to be loved by the 'left', hated by the 'right'. He hasn't changed, he's still reporting facts and I hope he never stops and I hope some day all of our journalists will follow his example. If only that were the case, what a different country this would be at this point in our history.

39. Thanks for the insight
Before reading this, I didn't have an opinion of Greenwald as a person. But I already liked his work because of his investigative and analytical abilities, along with his command of the language (those that say he's got his facts wrong have yet to show any evidence--only that Greenwald has offended them by indelicately pointing out the president's many shortcomings and sell outs). After reading this, I like the guy personally.

47. Aw... Here's my babies who were born to a pregnant dog found on the street:
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 09:41 AM by cui bono
They were the only two in the litter - vet had told the people she had already had a litter and these may have been a second, simultaneous pregnancy - and I got them when they were eight weeks old. Took them back to see their mom, who the people who found her kept, at 3 months since I read that's good for them. They're gone now, way too early due to heart failure and cancer, but they were the best dogs I ever had, full of personality and so devoted and loving - a trait of their breed (pit bull), which is too misunderstood and mistreated.

The boy's (blond) name is ChIF, short for Chocolate Ice-cream Face cuz he had brown around his mouth that faded as he got older, and the girl's name is Ruga, Brazilian Portuguese for wrinkle, and I called her Ruga Buga Muga Wuga and she wagged her tail every time I said that.
