DU this poll please - "On whom do you place the most blame for the Minnesota state shutdown?"
Edited on Fri Jul-01-11 01:24 AM by mzmolly
Please let the Pioneer Press, and the people of Minnesota know who you feel is responsible for the Minnesota state government shutdown.

http://www.twincities.com/index.html?_requestid=489769&_requestid=491660

Currently the poll reads
The GOP 44%
Dayton/DFL 28%

All of the above 27%

Thanks for your help DU. :hi:

Update - after posting the poll on DU, the poll now reads

The GOP 39 %
Dayton/DFL 43 %

All of the above 17 %

So much for DU helping out with the poll, eh? :hide: The trolls are winning, it seems. :(

I cannot believe that in MY home state this shit is happening. I can't believe the Repigs took over the MN legislature last year.

We've got to take back the legislature from those pigs next year.

3. Why is this the first I am hearing about a shutdown?
What is the back story on this?

I still remember 1998 or so and Minnesota had this big surplus and Jesse the Body promised every voter about $5,000 in tax rebates if they voted for him. But then once he was elected, he quickly backed off and said the legislature had already spent the surplus.

4. Ventura sent out surplus checks for a few hundred bucks.
I think he realized that the surplus wasn't as large as he anticipated. ;)

Here's more on the shutdown.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/30/minnesota-government-shutdown_n_887722.html

Dayton has proposed making $1.8 billion in cuts to the state budget, delaying payments for the state's education system and raising another $1.8 billion by adding a fourth bracket to the top of the state income tax. Republicans, for their part, have resisted any tax increases, preferring instead to balance the budget solely by cutting funding for education, health care, social services and other state programs.

48. I have back story for you
Pawlenty never balanced a budget in his eight years as governor. He kicked the proverbial can down the road and the GOP run house and senate decided this is the year we suddenly have to be responsible. So we started the year $5 billion short and now they insist that we hold to a self imposed $32 billion spending limit.

The GOP is demanding that Dayton sign a budget that slashes $5 billion from education, health, and human services. Dayton is holding firm. He wants a 3% increase on the top 7700 wage earners in the state. The GOP would rather see everyone suffer than make the wealthy pay taxes. And the wealthy in Minnesota pay way less than their fair share because Pawlenty severely cut their taxes over 8 years which is the god damned cause of this $5 billion budget shortfall in the first place.

GOP = Slaves to the richest 2%, professional hypocrites, and immoral assholes.

21. In Minnesota the Democratic Party is called Democratic-Farmer-Labor
I guess those were three smaller parties that merged at one point, although that only seems to be local Minnesota history, although nationally the Democrats absorbed the nascent Populist (Farmers') Party when they also nominated the Populist candidate William Jennings Bryan as their Presidential candidate in 1896. Some state legislatures at that time in places like North Dakota and Kansas were controlled by the Populist Party, but that party did not last long.

32. "What’s at Stake for Minnesota?"
Edited on Fri Jul-01-11 02:24 PM by mzmolly
(Snip)

The GOP Budget Protects the Richest 2% at a Huge Cost to Everyone Else

Special Education is at stake ... $370.00 per ever Special Education child in every school district in Minnesota would be cut.

Higher Education and Higher Tuition is at stake ... The GOP’s $422 million cut in higher education would result in a $1,300.00 tuition increase for University of Minnesota undergraduate students.

Healthcare for 140,000 Minnesotans is at stake ... The GOP budget eliminates healthcare funding for 140,000 Minnesotans.

Over $1 Billion in Property Tax increases are at stake ... The GOP budget raises property taxes on Minnesotans by eliminating the Homestead Credit and cutting Local Government Aid (LGA).

Affordable Transit is at stake ... The GOP budget would increase fares by $250 a year for a full time rider and result in nearly 24 million fewer rides to work or school.

Our seniors are at stake ... The GOP budget jeopardizes seniors, thousands of seniors would pay hundreds more in rent; and thousands more will be moved out of their own homes and into nursing homes.

Public Safety is at stake ... Minnesotans would see cuts to Public Safety under the GOP budget – including cuts to prisons, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the State Patrol, police officers, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, and other law enforcement personnel across Minnesota.
