http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2011/05/09/148482.html">Qaddafi and son Saif, top Libyan officials, to be issued arrest warrants by ICC
The general prosecutor of the International Criminal Court plans to request that ICC pre-trial judges issue arrest warrants against Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi and his son Saif Al Islam for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Similar charges are being lodged against Libya’s head of intelligence, Abdullah Al Senussi

ICC prosecutors are currently preparing evidence and will disclose the list of all those to be indicted next week and maybe as early as Monday, May 16. It is highly unlikely that Mr. Qaddafi will accept ICC summons, let alone allow himself to be arrested.

For its part, the Libyan opposition has sent a list of names to Portugal’s Ambassador Jose Morales Cabral, head of sanctions committee against Libya in the UN. The list includes 88 Libyan officials to be included in the Security Council Resolution 1970 sanctions list.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/10/gaddafi-nato-bombs-tripoli">Gaddafi stays out of public view as Nato bombs Tripoli
Questions are being asked across the Libyan capital about the leadership of Colonel Gaddafi, who has not been seen since he reportedly escaped the air strike 10 days ago in which his son was killed.

Libyan officials at the time confirmed that Gaddafi had been in the home of Saif al-Arab, when at least two bombs dropped by Nato jets hit the family compound.

Fighter planes returned to the skies over Tripoli on Monday night for the first time since that attack, hitting six targets in the early hours and hammering home to a tired city that the eight-weekcampaign has not run out of targets.

On the streets of the capital that he has ruled for almost 42 years, Gaddafi's supporters were wondering aloud about their leader's fate, while at the same time complaining that the UN-imposed siege was taking an increasingly heavy toll.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8505936/Libya-800-refugees-drowned-trying-to-escape-Gaddafi.html">Libya: '800 refugees drowned' trying to escape Gaddafi
The dramatic claim was made just days after it emerged that 61 people drowned after another ship sank despite being spotted and given assistance by an unidentified military helicopter.

There have been claims it was from a Nato vessel patrolling the waters off the coast of Libya but officials have denied this saying there is "no evidence that one of their vessels was involved."

The victims are made up mainly of refugees fleeing Libya but economic migrants are also feared to have died as they sailed from north Africa to the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa.

...

Before the civil war began Libyan patrol boats stopped any vessel attempting to set sail in a deal agreed with Italy and before the bombing campaign started mad dog Colonel Gaddafi threatened to turn Europe "black through illegal immigration" in an attempt to ward off military intervention.

I speculated about this http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1072564&mesg_id=1074020">here. Gaddafi should be held responsible for this, the boats are leaving from Tripoli which he presumably has under his control.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/05/11/uk-libya-idUKLDE71Q0MP20110511">Libyan rebels say they have made gains in Misrata
Libyan rebels said they had made gains by driving back Muammar Gaddafi's troops on the eastern and western edges of the port city of Misrata and encircling them at the airport.

The rebels said on Tuesday they had also taken the town of Zareek, about 25 km (15 miles) west of Misrata, but were still trying to extinguish fires at fuel storage tanks caused by a government attack last week.

Misrata, besieged by Gaddafi's forces for eight weeks, is strategically important to rebel hopes of overthrowing the Libyan leader because it is the only city they hold in the west of the North African country.

...

"The plan is to drive out Gaddafi's forces from the airport and the air force academy where they are now trapped," rebel spokesman Abdelsalam said by phone from Misrata.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/05/10/uk-libya-idUKLDE71Q0MP20110510">Libyan government bombards residential area - rebels
Libyan government forces bombarded a residential area outside Misrata Tuesday, said rebels trying to maintain their grip on the city in the face of a fierce onslaught.

Fighting in the port city has ebbed and flowed over the past few weeks but rebels gained ground Monday after hundreds of them broke through a front line and consolidated their positions west of the city, according to a report in the New York Times.

Misrata is key to rebel hopes of overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi because it is the last city they control in the west of the North African country.

The Libyan leader has not appeared publicly since April 30, when a NATO air strike on a house in the capital killed his youngest son and three of his grandchildren, leading some Arab diplomats to question why he has remained out of sight.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/05/10/uk-libya-timeline-idUKTRE7492Q820110510">Timeline - Libya's uprising against Muammar Gaddafi
Here is a timeline on the revolt in Libya since the first protests began in February:

Feb 15/16, 2011 - A riot in Benghazi is triggered by the arrest of human rights activist Fethi Tarbel, who has worked to free political prisoners, Quryna newspaper reports.

February 17 - Activists designate this day as a day of rage. It is the anniversary of clashes in 2006 in Benghazi when security forces killed protesters attacking the city's Italian consulate.

February 21 - Diplomats at Libya's mission to the United Nations side with the revolt against their country's leader and call on the Libyan army to help overthrow "the tyrant Muammar Gaddafi."

Reuters surprisingly accurate in this one.

* 98 percent of the respondents do not support the division of Libya as a part of the political solution for the current conflict with the Gaddafi regime. Around 95 percent also don’t see any role for Gaddafi or his sons in a transitional period, and think it is impossible to implement any political reform in Libya if Gaddafi or one of his sons stays in power

* Around 96 percent of those polled, believe that the 17th of February revolution can consolidate the national unity of Libya and support the model of a democratic Libya based on a constitution which respects human rights

* Al-Qaeda has not played any role in the 17th of February revolution, say 94 percent of the Eastern Libyans, and 91 percent thinks it’s impossible for Al-Qaeda to play any political role in the new Libya

* The National Transitional Council is seen by 92 percent of those surveyed as “expressing the views and wishes of Libyans for change”

This is equivalent to 17% the entire population of Libya, doing the numbers very conservatively.

http://jenkinsear.com/2011/03/19/a-legal-war-the-united-nations-participation-act-and-libya/">A Legal War: The United Nations Participation Act and Libya
The above link is to an overview of why Obama's implementation of the NFZ and R2P is perfectly legal under the law. I will not post it entirely here, however, all objections come down to the misinformed position that Obama, by using forces in Libya, was invoking Article 43 of the United Nations. This is wrong. Obama invoked Article 42, which does not require congressional approval to implement. Proof of this is that Article 43 has http://www.un.org/en/sc/repertoire/actions.shtml#rel5">never been used.

It goes like this: The US law (Title 22, Chap. 7, Subchap. XIV § 287d) grants the President the right to invoke UN Article 42 http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode22/usc_sec_22_00000287---d000-.html">without authorization, the War Powers Act (Title 50, Chap. 33 § 1541) grants the President permission to act without authorization under http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/50/1541–1548.html">"specific statutory authorization" which, by definition, is what 287d does. § 1543 of the War Powers Act requires the President to report to Congress, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/obama_explains_libya_mission_to_congress/2011/03/03/ABU9377_blog.html">which he did. One can argue all day and night about the legality of the War Powers Act, doesn't change the fact that under the law as it is written, the President acted within the law.

Mohammed Nabbous, killed by Gaddafi's forces while trying to report on the massacre in Benghazi

"I'm not afraid to die, I'm afraid to lose the battle" -Mohammed Nabbous, a month ago when all this began

I'm struggling to come up with something to say about this man. I was not aware of the Libyan uprising until I saw Mo's first report, begging for help, posted here on DU. I was stricken. Here was a man giving everything he had to explain a situation that clearly terrified him, I would not call him a coward in that moment, but you could see the fear in his eyes, and desperation in his voice. For 30 days Nabbous would spend many hours covering the uprising in Benghazi. For many nights I would go to sleep with the webcast of Benghazi live on my computer screen, looking to it occasionally to be sure it was still 'there.' Mo treated the chat room as if we were his friends, and in some way, we were. I never signed up to LiveStream to thank him for all his work and it seems somewhat shallow to do so now, given that I was a lurker for so long. Ever since I took over posting these threads "Libya Alhurra" has been linked as a source of information. It wasn't until last night, when I posted, and twitter posted on Mo's adventures out into Benghazi to try to determine the truth of the situation, that Mo's webchannel became a hit, over 2000 people were watching him stream live. This was curious to him because he'd done many reports like this in the past but he appeared somewhat bemused that the view count exploded as it did. Last night Mo became a star. This is a man who first started out with a webcast replete with fear and desperation finally overcoming that aspect of himself and losing that fear, to become someone who was a fighter for the resistance just as much as those who held the guns. Reporting on the front lines of Benghazi became his final act, and for that he should never, ever be forgotten. I'm so sorry Mo that I never got to know you better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38EXALI60hg">Mo's first report, which many of you may remember, begging for help.

Mo leaves behind a wife who is with child, she had http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/03/23/a_bright_voice_from_libyas_darkness">this to say about the No Fly Zone and R2P UN resolution:

We started this in a pure way, but he turned it bloody. Thousands of our men, women, and children have died. We just wanted our freedom, that's all we wanted, we didn't want power. Before, we could not do a single thing if it was not the way he wanted it. All we wanted was freedom. All we wanted was to be free. We have paid with our blood, with our families, with our men, and we're not going to give up. We are still going to do that no matter what it takes, but we need help. We want to do this ourselves, but we don't have the weapons, the technology, the things we need. I don't want anyone to say that Libya got liberated by anybody else. If NATO didn't start moving when they did, I assure you, I assure you, half of Benghazi if not more would have been killed. If they stop helping us, we are going to be all killed because he has no mercy anymore.

I take the rumors with a grain of salt, I'm in this for the long haul, as are others here. But if it does end soon we'll have to have a week-long "cool down" posting phase, just to keep the support alive. :hi:

4. The Benghazi free press
http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/foreign-policy/160223-the-benghazi-free-press-">The Benghazi free press
Recently I’ve been getting to know better the Benghazi press corps – not the foreign correspondents who pass through Benghazi on their way to and from the front line - but the budding local talent.

The new generation of free Libyan journalists have set themselves up in the burned out remains of the Courthouse building. There you will find correspondents for 7 newspapers, of a sort. Finding enough of the proper kind of paper for the print edition is just one of their challenges. There are also a number of radio stations, some of which can be heard in Tripoli and the other areas which Gadhafi’s forces still control. And of course there is Free Libya TV (also known as al-Ahar TV) broadcasting from Doha but possibly moving soon to Benghazi.

All of this free media is vital counterweight to Libya State TV. While its cult like focus on Gadhafi and shamelessly twisted news reporting may seem laughable to people outside Libya, many Libyans still watch it and believe that at least some of it must be true.

Almost everyone involved is young with very little experience. Most started out as ‘citizen journalists’ and they have delighted in telling me how they beat Gadhafi by uploading videos and pictures, getting the news out to the world of the first wave of the atrocities in the early day of the crisis, even though Gadhafi had ‘switched off’ the (already heavily censored) Internet.

Another wonderful article about the Benghazi revolutionaries.

6. Rebels exist but hiding in Gadhafi's capital
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/05/10/libya.rebels/">Rebels exist but hiding in Gadhafi's capital
...

But we regularly managed to sneak out of the Rixos in recent weeks and discovered that the notion of Tripoli as a bastion of Gadhafi support is little more then a charade.

In one neighborhood we managed to contact the rebels. They brought us to a secret location where the refrain is: "We are the youth of 17th of February in Tripoli. We declare our total support to the free Libyan people. We also declare our full and total support to the Transitional National Council (the de facto rebel government) and believe only it and no one else is the legitimate representative of the Libyan people."

Those simple words can easily land young people in jail if they are caught shouting them in public and certainly if they are talking to international journalists.

So the young men wore masks. They were kind and well-educated and strongly denied the notion of a fanatical anti-Western public in Tripoli.

7. Alumna discusses oppression in Libya
She said her father left the country in 1977 because of the oppressive government.

Abraibesh said she left for Libya last year in September and planned to stay until mid-April, allowing her to experience life under Gaddafi for a while before the protests started. She explained that it was difficult learning to censor herself on a regular basis.

Abraibesh planned to stay in Libya through April, but her family pressured her to return home to safety. She left on March 17 when the opportunity to drive to Cairo arose after her uncle was shot in the foot and could not be treated because of a lack of medical supplies in Benghazi.

She said tanks were outside her house that day and that if the United Nations Security Council Resolution of 1973, which established the no-fly zone, had not been passed, then Benghazi would have been leveled.

9. Tagrawla Tafsut Imazighen Libya (video)

♫♫♫ Mazigh Berber Libyan Music, SLE HMANA Production , Title: "The Amazigh Spring" "Le printemps berbère" (in Tamazight "Tafsut N Imazighen الربيع الامازيغي).

Berbers are the indigenous peoples of North Africa west of the Nile Valley. They are discontinuously distributed from the Atlantic to the Siwa oasis, in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger River. Historically they spoke various Berber languages, which together form a branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Today Arabic is spoken almost universally by Berbers, along with Darija, as well as French (in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria) and some Spanish (in Western Sahara and parts of Morocco), due to European colonisation of the Maghreb. Today most Berber-speaking people live in Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mali and Niger. Many Berbers call themselves some variant of the word Imazighen (singular: Amazigh), meaning "free people" or "free and noble men." The best known of ancient Berbers are the Numidian king Masinissa, and his son Jughurta, the Roman author Apuleius, Saint Augustine, prince Aksel (also called Kuseila who killed invader Oqba Ben Nafa3) and queen Dihya (Al Kahina) from the Aures region. Famous Berbers of the Middle Ages includes Tariq ibn Ziyad, the general who conquered Andalusia; Abbas Ibn Firnas, a prolific inventor and early pioneer in aviation; Ibn Battuta, a medieval explorer who traveled the longest known distances in pre-modern times and compiled his transhumance in several books; and Estevanico, an early explorer of the Americas.

“Although it’s a real challenge for us to strike military targets in and around population centers like Misurata, while minimizing the risks to innocent civilians, we have been working hard to prevent attacks by pro-Khadafy forces,’’ Gabellini said.

The rebels posted video clips calling on Khadafy’s forces in the Misurata area to surrender.

“We are after you, Khadafy,’’ one of the fighters in the video said.

Bani, the rebel spokesman, praised the latest NATO airstrikes.

“They are doing their jobs very, very well,’’ he said. “We will need these airstrikes when we are planning to advance on the ground.’’

The first was a dupe and I was minutes later, so I went to edit it out into something fresh. Stories had started breaking, so no problem. Finally, after getting out-moused two more times I settled on a three-week-old unloved tweet. Lesson learned: don't mess with "t".

14. Libyan Rebels Gain Ground in Coordinated Attack
Source: The Wall Street Journal

MAY 10, 2011, 8:54 P.M. ET
By MUNEEF HALAWA

BENGHAZI, Libya–A series of air strikes by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Tuesday hit command centers in Tripoli, while the alliance stepped up its campaign to halt Col. Moammar Gadhafi's advance on rebel-held areas by pounding government forces near the town of Ajdabiya.

In an operation that rebel commanders said was coordinated with NATO, rebel units equipped with Grad rocket launchers launched an attack westwards from Ajdabiya toward the oil town of Brega.

The rebels claimed to have destroyed 14 pick-up trucks belonging to Col. Gadhfai loyalists in the attack, but said that instead of advancing west following the battle, they immediately retreated to bait pro-Gadhafi forces into a trap.

...

"There was a really large force of Gadhafi forces heading towards Adjabiya," said Col. Ahmed Omar Bani, the spokesman for the rebel army. "As they moved on Adjabiya they were hit by NATO forces."

15. Libya: Col Gaddafi targeted in series of precision strikes
Source: The Telegraph

Col Muammar Gaddafi and his armed forces have been directly targeted in a series of precision strikes in Tripoli and the key town of Misurata as concerns grow that the regime is attempting to swamp Europe with refugees.

By Thomas Harding, and Andrew Gilligan in Tripoli 7:34PM BST 10 May 2011

The new phase of highly accurate attacks, shown in photographs released by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, was launched as an increasingly desperate refugee crisis has seen thousands from Libya flee for Europe in just a few days.

In a sign that the regime is trying to force a refugee crisis as a weapon against its Nato enemies, almost 1,900 people from Libya arrived in five boats on the Italian islands of Lampedusa and Linosa this weekend alone. Another vessel sank – bringing the total lost to four boats.

Hundreds of bodies are now washing ashore along the Libyan coast. Some of the refugees said they were forced on to the boats by Libyan troops and police, the International Organisation for Migration reported. Others were given free passage, in contrast to the normal practice where migrants are charged fortunes for the crossing.

...

There was speculation last night that Col Gaddafi had been killed in Nato bombings of his compound, although the Foreign Office said it had received no reports that he was dead.

16. As bullets fly and sanctions bite, Libya’s once gilded economy stalls

By Associated Press, Published: May 10 | Updated: Wednesday, May 11, 12:54 AM

TRIPOLI, Libya — Towering above the Libyan capital’s coastline, the sleek silver Marriott Hotel opened three months ago as the latest symbol of the North African nation’s oil-fueled investment boom. Ten days after its Feb. 15 opening, however, it shut its doors as mass unrest engulfed the country and quickly turned violent.

The 36-floor tower, built to host foreign investors in a time when hope of economic growth abounded in Libya, sits empty. Almost overnight, what had come to represent a new Libya, replete with opportunities even under the oppressive rule of Moammar Gadhafi, morphed into a symbol of the country’s uncertain future.

...

The popular uprising that erupted in February, and the subsequent battles between rebels and forces loyal to Gadhafi, brought to the fore the frustrations of ordinary Libyans demanding a better life. Those fighting Gadhafi said they want freedom, but also economic opportunities long elusive because of rampant patronage and nepotism.

...

The unraveling of the economy is perhaps as much a product of its shaky foundations as of the fighting. There are no official unemployment figures, but the CIA estimates it ran as high as 30 percent in 2004. Some 75 percent of food has to be imported. A politicized education system has failed to produce a skilled labor force, analysts say.

Gadhafi “spent so much oil money on Third World causes, on protecting himself,” said Paul Sullivan of Georgetown University. “He wasn’t taking care of his people.”

The EU plans to open an office in the rebel-held Libyan city of Benghazi to improve the flow of aid for the authorities there, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has said.

The office will help support civil society and the Interim Transitional National Council opposed to Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, she said.

...

"Gaddafi must go from power and must end his regime," she said, earning some applause from MEPs.

She stressed the need for the EU to help the anti-Gaddafi rebels develop education, healthcare and border security.

Libyan students stuck as upheaval back home threatens civilians and cuts off their finances are dreading possible deportation and considering asking for asylum.

"After June 1, I won't have any money," said Abdelhamid Elgzil, 40, who lives in Denver with his wife and five children.

...

Given his role in recent demonstrations denouncing Moammar Gadhafi's regime, he fears he would be killed if he returned to Libya.

...

Student visas do not allow work, leaving many struggling to cover rent and food. Those whose relatives in Libya are able to withdraw money from banks cannot send it because the U.S. Treasury Department has frozen Libyan assets.

If Libyan students can't pay tuition bills and their enrollment lapses, schools must notify the Department of Homeland Security, which can then initiate deportation. ....

24. Ali Tarhouni, who left US to battle Gadhafi, returns to Washington to seek support
This excellent report was posted before by Josh, and it's worth reading the full story at the link. Tarhouni was a senior economics lecturer at the University of Washington until he returned to Libya in February to serve as Finance Minister of the opposition's Transitional National Council. Now he returns to Washington, D.C. seeking U.S. recognition of the TNC and unfreezing of Libyan assets which the TNC desperately needs.

Libyan opposition minister: Basics scarce, cash running dry

By Miranda Leitsinger
Reporter
updated 5/10/2011 6:15:44 AM ET 2011-05-10T10:15:44

...

Among the challenges facing Tarhouni, who went into exile in 1974 and was sentenced to death in absentia by Gadhafi for his pro-democracy activities, are money-hoarding and foreign-exchange liquidity.

"We're faced with the same sanctions as Gadhafi," he said, referring to U.S. sanctions that have frozen more than $34 billion of Libyan government assets, in addition to U.N. and European sanctions. "I don't have access to any foreign exchange to cover any purchases, open lines of credits to merchants, so that's a very challenging aspect to what I do."

Part of the reason for his first U.S. trip since he left in late February to join the fledgling opposition council is to push for the quick unfreezing of some Libyan assets that the opposition has access to. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last weekend that the U.S. is willing to free up some of the funds, possibly $150 million in the short term.

...

Tarhouni, who said he clashed ideologically with Gadhafi while a member of a pro-democracy student union in Libya, left the country in 1974. He said his name was put on a hit list in the 1980s and that at least 20 people on that list were killed in Europe.

...

"It's going to be challenging. You need to build a lot of institutions from scratch. Having a constitution by itself doesn't mean that you have a democracy … you need to inform people and you need to teach people," he said. "… We will tackle this. … We will build a decent society for the next generations."

This all matters because not only are Zintan and Yefren getting shelled less often, the FF are that much closer to controlling the road junctions around Gheryan -and that means a ~200 mile detour through open desert for Gaddafi forces moving weapons from Sabha to Tripoli.

Books Gaddafi banned sell well in rebel-held Libya
By Mohammed Abbas

BENGHAZI, Libya | Wed May 11, 2011 12:01pm BST

(Reuters) - The revolution that swept Muammar Gaddafi from power in east Libya has been a bonanza for bookstores as curious readers stock up on titles banned during his decades-long rule.

Newly uncensored works on history and religion and books by opposition exiles are most popular, say booksellers in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

"People are thirsty for knowledge, to know about their history," said bookseller Yusuf al-Muahaishi, who said sales had doubled since mass protests prised much of east Libya from Gaddafi's grip in mid-February.

"Books about the history of Libya were banned or censored. They mostly had to be about Gaddafi," Muahaishi said as he served customers at the al Tamour bookshop in central Benghazi.

Source: Australian Associated Press

From: AAP May 11, 2011 8:52PM

LIBYAN rebels cornered Muammar Gaddafi's troops at the airport in the western city of Misrata amid fierce fighting today.

...

Battles (last) night and Wednesday morning left rebels in control of the northern, eastern and western perimeters of the Misrata airport compound, leaving only the south where Gaddafi's troops would face fierce resistance if they wanted to fight their way out.

It was unclear if any regime fighters were killed or wounded, but rebels said they had captured one Mauritanian mercenary in Gaddafi's employ, although an AFP correspondent at the scene could not confirm this.

The insurgents were advancing to Dafnia, and were readying to move on Zliten, the next major town on the road to Tripoli.

The government has portrayed the teachers as an armed mob, who killed two shopkeepers.

"The security forces will not tolerate such illegal chaotic actions," security sources told the Yemen Observer.

A Bahraini oil company has sacked almost 300 employees for taking part in pro-democracy protest, the kingdom's energy minister has revealed, AP reports.

Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza, who also serves as the chief executive of the state-owned Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), said that 293 employees have been dismissed since the king declared martial law on March 15 to quell weeks of demonstrations.

Fifty employees were also suspended pending investigations by authorities, and 11 board members of the workers union were referred to the general prosecutor

35. US journalists detained in Libya allowed a visitor
Source: Boston Globe

May 11, 2011

BOSTON—The employer of one of two American journalists being detained by forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi says they have been allowed a visitor for the first time after more than a month in captivity.

James Foley, who was covering the conflict in Libya for the Boston-based news agency GlobalPost, was captured April 5. Foley has been detained with Clare Morgana Gillis, a freelance journalist who wrote for The Atlantic and USA Today.

A GlobalPost spokesman said Wednesday that an intermediary visited Foley and Gillis in Tripoli and said they were in good health and being treated well.

Their families plan to hold the vigil Wednesday evening on the steps of Harvard University's Memorial Church.

38. At least nine people were killed in the bombardment of Homs today...
...says Wissam Tarif from the human rights group Insan.

"The area is under siege. We have confirmed nine people killed there but the number might be much higher. There are dozens of people injured inside the (Baba Amr) area and there is no medical attention whatsoever. And people are not being able to take them to hospital."

Tarif, who is monitoring events from The Hague, claimed the regime deployed tanks because it can't count on rank and file soldiers to shoot protesters.

He claimed nine soldiers defected in Homs. Tarif said Homs nothing explains the shelling of the city "unless they are fighting another part of the army".

He added: "This is a ruthless regime that is willing to do anything to stay in power."

43. I want the Gaddafi family captured alive
I want them captured, tried and executed, by Libyans, for their barbaric crimes against the Libyan people. Whereas I think Ben Ali and Mubarek should be given full immunity from prosecution (albeit with some assets repossessed), I think Gaddafi and his mafia capos should all face the noose. The incentive for the tyrants needs to be to step aside peacefully. Saleh and Assad are watching.

I hope at this point that no one cuts them a deal. The chances for a deal have come and gone. Unconditional surrender is the only option for Gaddafi now.

63. If safe passage into exile ends the bloodshed sooner, fine
The TNC has already said it would accept that as a solution, and that Libya would not prosecute Gaddafi if he just leaves.

It doesn't necessarily mean that Gaddafi would escape justice, as he would have no immunity from the International Criminal Court.

If the suffering and death of thousands of people can be prevented, it's worth it to make an exit deal.

68. I agreed with you 2-3 weeks ago
But for Gaddafi to keep fighting long after he could no longer win, when the goal of the fighting was continued oppression, rape and murder of his own people, is unforgivable. The time for exile ended when he started indiscriminately bombarding Misurata. He is defeated. A ceasefire does no one any good since so many thousands are dead already. An unconditional surrender, maybe. Exile, no.

#Gaddafi forces attempt to attack #Ajdabiya but were hit with a massive counter-attack from pro-democracy forces, however they were (cont)

told to stop pushing forward again from #NATO - not sure why NATO keeps telling them to stop, they need to join #Misrata

NATO is being smart. The emotional response in war is to become very aggressive as the other side starts to collapse. Yet history is filled with examples of the winning side experience major losses near the end of a conflict because they got too aggressive. The recent successes have been the result of organization and discipline. Turning up the pressure is smart, getting reckless is not. The rebels are going to win, they need to focus on minimizing casualties.

45. Rebels say they captured Misrata airport (AND another town)
Source: CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

•Opposition fighters in a nearby city helped

•Misrata has been engulfed in violence for weeks

One town fell overnight to opposition forces

From Amir Ahmed, CNNMay 11, 2011 9:48 a.m. EDT

Benghazi, Libya (CNN) -- Libyan rebels captured the airport in the besieged city of Misrata on Wednesday, a rebel spokesman in Benghazi said.

Shamsiddin Abdulmolah of the Transitional National Council said the airport, located in the southern region of the war-torn city, fell to "revolutionaries" after opposition fighters nearby in Zlaitin were able to join their counterparts in Misrata.

The capture of the location is key for the rebels fighting the forces of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi since it would provide important access for humanitarian aid.

...

Abdulmolah said an unknown number of casualties occurred in the fighting. He also reported that the oil-rich town of Jakharrah fell overnight to opposition forces and that Gadhafi's forces are surrounded in the oasis area towns of Awjilah and Jalu.

Very happy to hear our brothers and sisters in Tripoli are now also rising once again to take out the Dictator Army.

Hard to know what is going on street level wise with so many Areas from Tripoli sending us messages that they are now flying our FF Flag or locals have joined newly setup neighborhood FF units!

What I can confirm is very large Libyan Army (that is pro-Dictator Troops) defecting and in many cases taking their army uniforms off and putting FF symbols on them and joining the newly created FF units. As well weapons are being given to FF from the defecting Dictator Troops.

The FF have now arrived fully inside Tripoli, all I can wish them as a FF from Western Mountains best of luck into a speedy takeover over our Libyan Capital!

Libyan rebels say airport seized, reject ceasefire

By Guy Desmond Guy Desmond

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Libyan rebels said they took control of Misrata airport in heavy fighting with forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi on Wednesday and rejected a United Nations call for a ceasefire.

The rebels are fighting to end Gaddafi's 41 years in power, but the war has reached stalemate with Gaddafi controlling the capital and almost all of western Libya while rebels control Benghazi and other towns in the oil-producing east.

Misrata is the only major city the rebels hold in the west and for eight weeks Gaddafi's forces have besieged it, leading to fierce fighting in which hundreds have been killed.

"The airport, with the help from great God, has been freed. The rebels have seized many weapons including tanks and, thank God, they are still functioning," said rebel spokesman Mohamad Jaber by telephone from Misrata, a port city about 190 km east of Tripoli.

52. In Libya, a regime with two faces
TRIPOLI, Libya — It is a classic good cop, bad cop routine. Libya is simultaneously trying to play the role of tough guy and victim in its dealings with the outside world, as it unleashes venom and shellfire on its opponents but pleads for a cease-fire and dialogue.

First came the bad cop, as Moammar Gaddafi vowed to disinfect his country from the filth “house by house, room by room, alley by alley, person by person.” The rebels were described as “al-Qaeda drunks,” “armed gangsters,” “terrorists” or simply “tick-infested rats.”

Yet in the past two weeks, some officials in Tripoli seem to have realized that defiance, although playing well to Gaddafi’s supporters at home, does not play well in the outside world.

So a new line has emerged, embodied in a more conciliatory speech that Gaddafi delivered last weekend — the Libyan government as peacemaker, a regime that accepted an African Union peace plan rejected by the rebels, a misunderstood administration that has been picked on by former friends abroad but that still wants to solve its problems through dialogue.

54. Gadhafi has until end of May for exile deal—Italy
Agence France-Presse

Filed Under: Foreign affairs & international relations, Laws, Government, Crime

ROME—Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has until the end of May to agree his exile before an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court is issued, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said on Wednesday.

"There are countries that in recent weeks have indicated... a willingness to welcome him," Frattini said in an interview with RAI public radio.

"It's clear that if there is an international arrest warrant it would be more difficult to find an arrangement for the colonel and his family," he said.

"This will happen by the end of May," he added.

Frattini also said he believed there were "many defections" from the regime underway, adding: "This shows we have probably arrived at a turning point."

Libya: Green groups sound alarm over tuna stocks

(AFP) – 4 hours ago

PARIS — Greenpeace and WWF on Wednesday said a fragile agreement to police the Mediterranean's precious stocks of bluefin tuna could be wrecked by "illegal" fishing by Libyan-flagged trawlers.

Tripoli has allowed fishing in its waters for the upcoming trawling season, even though its plans have not been approved by an international organisation that monitors tuna catches in the Mediterranean, they said.

"Illegal Libyan vessels are now ready to set sail for the Libyan fishing zone from European ports in France, at Sete, and Malta," the two groups charged in a joint press release.

Industrial trawling of Mediterranean tuna, prized in sushi, unfolds during a specific season, running from May 15 to June 15.

57. NYT (Chivers): Some pockets of fighting remain at Misrata airport

While Libyan opposition spokesmen and some rebels on the ground in Misurata are saying the airport (including its military annex) have been completely taken from Gaddafi forces, New York Times reporter CJ Chivers writes in his latest dispatch that some pockets of fighting remain.

A rebel military spokesman also claimed that rebels had taken Zlitan, around 50 kilometres west of Misurata, but we are waiting for more information to confirm that report.

LOL the FF outsmart G-forces
NATO LAUNCHED its most ambitious air attack of the Libyan war yesterday, co-ordinating strikes with rebel ground forces in what may be
a sign of things to come west of the town of Ajdabiya. In a plan pre-arranged with the western alliance, the rebels launched an attack
towards the Gadafy-held oil town of Brega across the front line late on Monday. A fierce firefight developed, in which the rebels claim to have destroyed 14 Libyan SUVs. But instead of advancing west, the rebel troops made a pre-arranged withdrawal. Pro-Gadafy forces then mobilised a force of tanks and chased after the rebels, heading towards Ajdabiya. However, the rebels had prearranged to move back to a line 20km behind the front. The zone was designated as a free-fire zone and, as the Libyan tanks advanced into it, they were hit by several hours of combing attacks. “There was a really large force of Gadafy forces heading towards Ajdabiya,” said Col Ali Bani, spokesman for the rebel army, the Free Libyan Forces. “As they moved on Ajdabiya, they were hit by Nato forces.”

Zliten is now free from Gadaffi - they are gaining more ground in eastern suburbs of Tripoli and expect soon FF to control from Misrata to Tripoli soon. Zawiah needs to be liberated and with daffi soliders deserting expected a tipping point where east and west of Tripoli becomes secure. WIth Sirte declaring themselves ow against Gadaffi this creates an interesting scenario in eastern half - NATO cleaned out last large packages of Gadaffiand now they will have a struggle getting support - if East can make their way to Misrata then we really are closing in. News from Misrata is very very good with the southern route now becoming free. Gadaffi has lost control now - only the few people where he holds them and/or their families as hostages to make sure they do not defect....someone inside the tent has to do the decent thing and end it all soon - freedom is so close now

I thought Zlitan would be tough, because it is one of the better places for Gaddafi troops to make a stand. A heavily populated region would provide protection against NATO attacks. I thought Gaddafi would make a stand there.

It is about 70 miles from Zlitan to the outskirts of Tripoli, correct? Is there an organized force standing in the rebels way, or could they be in eastern Tripoli by tomorrow? If they didn't fight in Zlitan, where will Gaddafi's troops fight?

62. Syria: Missing Al Jazeera reporter deported to Iran
Source: Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera's Dorothy Parvaz, missing since arriving in Damascus almost two weeks ago, is now understood to be in Tehran.

Last Modified: 11 May 2011 13:46

Missing Al Jazeera journalist Dorothy Parvaz has been deported from Syria to Iran, the network has learned.

Parvaz, who holds Iranian, American and Canadian citizenship, has been missing since she arrived at Damascus airport on April 29 to cover protests in Syria.

Syrian officials had previously told Al Jazeera the 39-year-old was being held in the Syrian capital and would be released.

"We have now received information that she is being held in Tehran," an Al Jazeera spokesman said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We are calling for information from the Iranian authorities, access to Dorothy, and for her immediate release. We have had no contact with Dorothy since she left Doha on April 29 and we are deeply concerned for her welfare."

Poland’s foreign minister makes unexpected trip to Libya
11.05.2011 15:59

Poland’s foreign minister Radek Sikorski has made a previously unannounced trip to the Libyan rebel-controlled city of Benghazi.

Though Poland is not directly involved in the NATO-led military operation to protect civilians in the country, the government in Warsaw says it will be making contributions to humanitarian aid.

Yesterday at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry journalists were told to expect news of an “unexpected trip” Sikorski would be making today but they would not specify where.

Earlier, Minister Sikorski wrote on his Twitter micro-blogging site: “The CASA military plane is circling above Palermo. The sun is warming from the south. We're going where it is even hotter. Twitter may not work.”

As Heinz points out, it could take days to capture two men. It doesn't mean that Gaddafi is in control in any way. There are likely some residual pockets of resistance or small groups that may be trying to link up with Gaddafi's main forces. There is still some of that happening in Benghazi.

Misurata is liberated.

66. School's out for Libyan children of the revolution

by Rory Mulholland Rory Mulholland – 1 hr 34 mins ago

BENGHAZI, Libya (AFP) – Children in Benghazi are not being sent to fight on the frontline, but they are helping Libya's revolution by cleaning streets, working as traffic cops and dishing up army rations to rebel soldiers.

Schools shut down when the uprising against Moamer Kadhafi started in mid-February, and officials in Benghazi say they will not reopen until the strongman is toppled and the rebel-held east is reunited with the west.

In the meantime an army of kids in this city of 700,000 has to find ways of keeping itself busy and getting ready for what the rebels hope will be the post-Kadhafi era.

One example of revolutionary zeal is on display every evening at one of the city's busiest junctions, where children in dark-blue traffic police uniforms blow their whistles and gesture frantically to keep rush-hour motorists moving.

The first English-language radio station based in Libya is now broadcasting via website out of the eastern rebel stronghold in Benghazi, according to the opposition National Transitional Council.

75. Libyan Rebels Seize Control of Misurata’s Airport
Libyan Rebels Seize Control of Misurata’s Airport
C.J. Chivers/The New York Times

Published: May 11, 2011

MISURATA, Libya — Rebels in the contested western city of Misurata stormed the city’s airport on Wednesday afternoon, swarming over the grounds from the south and east and reclaiming it from the military of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

Seizing the airport in Misurata, Libya’s third-largest city, which has been under siege for nearly two months, marked one of the most significant rebel victories in the Libyan conflict.

The airport and its approaches were the last remaining pieces of significant terrain in the city to be controlled by the Qaddafi soldiers.

With these soldiers pushed back, the western area of Misurata appeared by nightfall to be out of range of the most common of the Qaddafi forces’ heavy weapons, including self-propelled artillery, Grad rockets and 120-millimeter mortars, with which the loyalists have fired cluster munitions.

76. Syria: 2 protesters dead, about 60 wounded by gunfire in Sana'a
(The Guardian's update from about 3 hours ago.)

Tom Finn, who is in Sana'a, reports that around 2,000 protesters marching from Change Square towards the Ministerial Council headquarters have been shot at by men in military uniforms:

So far two teenagers have been killed and around 60 people — among them women and children — have sustained bullet wounds.

There was some confusion at first as to who the troops actually belonged to: protesters said they were wearing uniforms similar to those of soldiers loyal to the renegade general Ali Mohsin, who have until now been guarding the protest camp at Change Square.

Among those injured is female activist Bushra Al-Surabi, who is suffering from a bullet wound to the leg.
The march was part of new efforts by Sana'a protesters to put more pressure on President Saleh. Other measures include blocking roads and carrying out acts of civil disobedience.

80. Libyan regime accused of exploiting humanitarian crisis
Source: The Guardian

Muammar Gaddafi's officials admits unseaworthy migrant ships are being allowed to sail as a protest against Nato air strikes

Martin Chulov in Tripoli and Simon Tisdall guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 11 May 2011 17.57 BST

The Libyan regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is allowing thousands of sub-Saharan African migrants on to overcrowded, unseaworthy ships in an apparently calculated attempt to use migration as a weapon to pressure Nato and the EU countries backing Libya's rebels.

Libyan officials admit they are not stopping boats teeming with African migrants embarking on perilous journeys to Europe in protest at air strikes, which they say have destroyed the country's coastguard.

Turning a blind eye to people smuggling has had disastrous humanitarian effects, apparently leading to the deaths of hundreds of boat people during unsuccessful attempts to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa, Malta, and other parts of Europe.

...

Cecilia Malmstrom, EU commissioner for home affairs, has demanded urgent action to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Libya. "Reports of men, women and children from sub-Saharan Africa being forced out of the country by the Gaddafi regime are particularly worrying," she said in a statement.

81. Sana'a, Yemen: "This is a massacre, they are opening fire randomly,"
Reuters has more details about the shots fired by Yemeni security forces at thousands of protesters in the capital Sana'a.

"This is a massacre, they are opening fire randomly," Mohammed al-Qibly, a leader of a youth protest movement in Sana'a, said on Al Jazeera television. "The scene is terrifying in every sense of the word."

Witnesses said some 40 people were shot and protesters stopped to help treat the wounded, who were rushed away in private vehicles as the gunfire continued.

"Forces opened fire heavily when protesters got around 200 metres away from the cabinet, but the protesters didn't back away at first," Yemeni journalist Abdulsattar Mohammed said. "A number of injured fell and they were carried away to hospital on motorcycles when police stopped ambulances from entering."

83. Hill defense panel pressing Pentagon for documents on communications relating to Libya

By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, May 11, 11:06 AM

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers who believe President Barack Obama’s didn’t properly consult with Congress before launching air strikes on Libya approved legislation Wednesday seeking Pentagon documents on all communications.

The House Armed Services Committee, beginning a marathon session to craft a $553 billion budget for the Defense Department next year, approved the measure on Libya by voice vote.

Republicans and some Democrats had complained that Obama failed to properly consult with Congress before approving the military operation to protect civilians from Moammar Gadhafi’s forces in Libya. The administration and some Republican senators, including John McCain of Arizona, said the U.S. had to act quickly to avoid a massacre in Benghazi.

“Although select members were invited to a conference call during a constituent work week, immediately preceding the president’s press conference, a phone call can hardly be considered significant consultation,” Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif, the panel chairman, said Wednesday.

84. Misrata: Revolutionaries capture airport--update
Reuters reports:

"The airport, with the help from great God, has been freed. The rebels have seized many weapons including tanks and, thank God, they are still functioning," rebel spokesman Mohamad Jaber said by telephone from Misrata, 190 km east of Tripoli.

"Now what is left and what the rebels are working on is liberating the airbase, which is close to the airport," he said.

Another rebel called Hicham who was at the airport said it had been the main base for Gaddafi forces in the city.

"So now, any supplies, weapons or munitions for future attacks by Gaddafi's forces on Misrata have to come from outside the city. This means they would be exposed to NATO air strikes."

...

"The revolutionaries...could not believe the amount and quality of the weapons they found there," he said. It was not possible to verify the rebel accounts independently.

85.  Libyan economy battered; new Marriott, now closed

Gadhafi "spent so much oil money on Third World causes, on protecting himself," said Paul Sullivan of Georgetown University. "He wasn't taking care of his people."

The scenes are a stark contrast to the sense of optimism, at least among privileged Libyans and foreign investors, that had prevailed after Libya began five years ago to claw its way back from nearly two decades of international isolation and sanctions.

While they may sound a death knell for Gadhafi's 42-year rule of the country, it's unclear how soon the sanctions could erode his ability to stay in power. Gadhafi has weathered such sanctions before and he is not without resources.

88. It's official--Kuwait to replace Syria as candidate for UN human rights seat
Kuwait will replace Syria as a candidate for a seat on the UN's Human Rights Council - a move welcomed by human rights and governments opposed to the crackdown by President Bashar Assad's security forces.

However, Syria's UN ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said the decision to delay its candidacy until 2013 had nothing to do with the current unrest in the country, AP reports.

"It's a sovereign decision based on the Syrian government's will to reschedule the timing of our candidacy ... based on reconsidering our priorities on the list of UN candidacies," he said.

The Kuwaiti and Syrian ambassadors announced the swap after the 53-member Asian Group met behind closed doors and endorsed the deal.

US Ambassador Susan Rice welcomed Kuwait's candidacy and praised the "important step" taken by Asian nations who demonstrated their unwillingness to support "a country whose human rights record is deplorable and ... is in the process of killing its own people on the streets, arresting thousands, and terrorising a population that is seeking to express itself through largely peaceful means."

Human Rights Watch said Syria should now end its violent crackdown on peaceful protests.
Peggy Hicks, the organization's global advocacy director, said "the election had become a referendum on Syria's violent suppression of protests, and Syria withdrew rather than face resounding defeat."

89. John Kerry seeks fund transfer to Libya opposition (he's drafting legislation)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Senator John Kerry said on Wednesday he was drafting legislation to authorize the transfer of available cash assets of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to a Libyan opposition group.

Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said there would be "a specific amount" for the Libyan opposition Transitional National Council, but he did not have the final number yet. The rebel group has said it needs up to $3 billion to keep going in the coming months as the fighting reaches stalemate.

"I am currently drafting legislation at the request of the State Department and the administration that will authorize the transfer of available cash assets to the council so that they will have available money. It will not come from an American taxpayer, it will come from Colonel Gaddafi himself," Kerry said.

"And we are hopefully going to legislate that shortly," the Democratic senator said after meeting with leaders of the Libyan opposition group, including Mahmoud Jebril, head of the council's crisis committee.

Jebril said his message was that "we are really here to join hands to build a democratic ideal on the Libyan soil."

That's the first of three articles I have here about conflict photographers. If any of them have been posted before, my apologies for being an idiot and not getting it the first time. To excerpt any text would be an injustice, dishonoring somehow what they are trying to tell us about what they have seen, so I'll just go with titles and links. Don't pass them up like I almost did.
