1. This needs to be adopted by the president
Not the whole sign holding thing, but commercials of real people telling their story, and how they were helped out on their medical problems thanks to OC. And they can end it with, "I am Obamacare," if OWS doesn't trademark it.

2. K & R - What A Powerful Campaign This Would Be: "I Am ObamaCare"....
Edited on Tue Nov-22-11 11:28 PM by global1
We should get many more people like this lady that were helped by Obama's HCR to do the same. Imagine a campaign ad where people are pictured with their story - in the same fashion this lady told her story - each saying "I Am ObamaCare". We need to turn the negative connotation that the Repugs gave to the term ObamaCare around - and a campaign like this would do that. It would put a huge positive spin on it. How can we get this done?

Somebody should secure the web name "IAMOBAMACARE.COM". There should be a website that people can go to and view all these success stories because of HCR. This is real powerful. I applaud this lady for doing this.

24. This Is An Excellent Idea
I think an organic campaign like this might go a long way and actually work its way towards becoming a media narrative if handled properly. If there were enough brave people like is lady who were able and willing to do something similar than a real campaign could get rolling here, with the ultimate objective of ensuring a) more people benefit from it, and b) Obama's reforms gain more credibility, thereby buying some political capital to help him make further steps where possible. I would certainly back it with my media contacts...

3. This could backfire.
If you send out a boat to pick up 10 out of 100 drowning people, don't expect the other 90 to raise a big cheer. What most people notice is their premiums skyrocketing and their benefits being reduced.

5. My opinion is that the insurance companies...
...are retaliating before most of the bill starts kicking in and especially the following clauses in 2014.

State health insurance exchanges for small businesses and individuals open.
Individuals with income up to 133% of the federal poverty level qualify for Medicaid coverage.
Healthcare tax credits become available to help people with incomes up to 400 percent of poverty purchase coverage on the exchange.
Premium cap for maximum "out-of-pocket" pay will be established for people with incomes up to 400 percent of FPL.<12><77> Section 1401 of PPACA explains that the subsidy will be provided as an advancable, refundable tax credit<78> and gives a formula for its calculation.<79> Refundable tax credit is a way to provide government benefit to people even with no tax liability<80> (example: Child Tax Credit). According to White House and Congressional Budget Office figures, the maximum share of income that enrollees would have to pay for the "silver" healthcare plan would vary depending on their income relative to the federal poverty level, as follows:<13><81> for families with income 133–150% of FPL will be 4-4.7% of income, for families with income of 150–200% of FPL will be 4.7-6.5% of income, for families with income 200–250% of FPL will be 6.5-8.4% of income, for families with income 250-300% of FPL will be 8.4-10.2% of income, for families with income from 300 to 400% of FPL will be 10.2% of income. In 2016,the federal poverty level is projected to equal about $11,800 for a single person and about $24,000 for family of four.<81> See Subsidy Calculator for specific dollar amount.<82>
Most people required to obtain health insurance coverage or pay a tax if they don't.
Health plans no longer can exclude people from coverage due to pre-existing conditions.
Employers with 50 or more workers who do not offer coverage face a fine of $2,000 for each employee if any worker receives subsidized insurance on the exchange. The first 30 employees aren't counted for the fine.
Health insurance companies begin paying a fee based on their market share.

19. Less than 16% of Americans with PECs are able to afford the "Buy In" Price.
The Affordable Care Act has helped some Americans,
the small handful of Upper Middle Class & Wealthy Americans who can afford the Buy In Price,
but for those struggling Americans in the Working Class.... SOL.

How many Americans have over $800/month of "disposable" income?
$800/month is the average Buy In price for these policies.
Must be nice.

"This program is a lifesaver for a lot of people who can pull together the money for it so they can get the care they need,” said DeAnn Friedholm, director of healthcare reform for Consumers Union. “But the monthly premiums are still too high for many people to afford.”

20. There are many of us over 50 who've had to drop insurance and can't afford PCIP.
Well stated, Eridani.

4. People here who dismiss health insurance reform...
...don't understand the stakes and for the most part have no familiarized themselves with what did pass. It's even worse among the general public!

The DNC really needs to roll out some issue ads on healthcare and the economy.

6. I certainly hope they will. Republicans keep saying they want to get rid of the entire thing but
a lot of people have been helped and should campaign against it in ads - being covered by parents up through 26, getting rid of preexisting condition exclusions by insurance Co's for kids, setting up the insurance pools like this lady joined to be covered, etc.- and it is true that the main provisions haven't kicked in yet.

There should be a lot of people willing to explain their story in an ad.

7. People pay far more attention to their own lives than to laundry lists
HCR does not actually regulate insurance companies. The rules have been so far set to eliminate serious regulation.

8. If you'd have looked at the laundry list -
you'd realize most of the provisions haven't kicked in.

Would you care to offer up any evidence of your claim? ;)

16. Unless you are actually sick, in which case it's much worse
The insurance premiums take money out of your pocket so you can't come up with the money to pay for care on account of the ridiculously high deductibles.

22. Absolutely Right!
Is Obamacare perfect? No

Does it help everyone? No

Is it worth supporting? Yes TOTALLY

While a single payer system may be ideal, sitting and waiting for that will leave an awful lot of people to fall ill and even loose their battle with illness in the meantime. If the good that is done by the imperfect PCIP is sufficiently publicized, then a momentum can be created to make further progress.

9. .
Well, I rather have Single Payer system – what we did get isn’t that great you know! Yeah, I do know. And I too wish we had gotten MORE reform passed. As long as health care is allowed to be a for-profit system, it only works if people stay sick. And that’s fundamentally wrong. Like I said, PCIP isn’t perfect, but it’s something.

RINGING endorsement

12. I'm 47.
I had cancer at 22.
A heartattack at 34.
A stroke at 46.
I have extremely low blood pressure along with several other "nagging" health problems that will catch up with me.

It's too late for me. So, why do I continue to fight? Why do I support Obamacare? Because of women and men like this. Because of the children that will benefit from the improvements to come. I'm sick and will never be well. This isn't my fight, but I do it anyway. Something my father taught me about being a Democrat. "It's not always about you."

Thanks for this. I'm so happy for this young woman. The alternative is heartbreaking.

17. I'm on PCIP too
Edited on Wed Nov-23-11 11:11 PM by Juche
Luckily I'm not nearly as sick as the woman in the photo. But my employer doesn't offer insurance either. Which sucks because even though I only pay about $180 a month for my insurance the government pays a huge sum too (probably $500+ a month, when the plans first came out the rates were $360 a month for my plan so I have no idea what my premiums would be if they were unsubsidized, I'm guessing $500 a month at minimum).

It sucks, employers skate out of providing benefits so now the bankrupt government has to do it. I am a contractor (which is how employers avoid offering job security or benefits) who works for a multinational company making several billion a year in profit, but instead of the multi-billion dollar a year in profit company offering health insurance the gov. which is a trillion in deficit each year has to. I hope Obamacare creates severe penalties for companies that avoid offering benefits. Or strengthens the existing ones, I think they are pretty lame (something like $2000 an employee, I don't remember).
