Bush Library Foundation President: Saddam’s Gun A Symbol That Bush ‘Disarmed Him Literally’

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/07/06/saddam-gun-disarmed/

By Ben Armbruster on Jul 6th, 2009 at 10:00 am

The New York Times reports today that when President Bush opens his library at Southern Methodist University in 2013, “visitors will most likely get to see one of his most treasured items: Saddam Hussein’s pistol.”

The Times notes that when visitors came to the White House, Bush often liked to show off the gun, which was found on Saddam when he was captured by U.S. special forces in December 2003. Referring to the gun’s historical value, Bush Library Foundation President Mark Langdale presented an interesting twist on its symbolism:

Mark Langdale, the president of the George W. Bush Foundation, said the library would use items to highlight 25 of Mr. Bush’s presidential decisions. “The gun is an interesting artifact, and it tells you that the United States captured Saddam Hussein and disarmed him literally,” Mr. Langdale said. “How we fit that into the decision to go to war, we haven’t gotten to that point yet.”

“It represents this Texas notion of the white hats taking out the black hats and keeping the trophy,” Rice University history professor Douglas Brinkley said, referring to Saddam’s pistol. “It’s a True West magazine kind of pulp western mentality. For President Bush, this pistol represents his greatest moment of triumph, like the F.B.I. keeping Dillinger’s gun. He wants people generations from now to see the gun and say, ‘He got the bad guy.’”

Obama on bin Laden pics: ‘We don’t trot out this stuff out as trophies’

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/05/04/obama-blocks-release-of-bin-laden-death-photos/

By David Edwards
Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 -- 2:17 pm

In an interview that will air on CBS' 60 Minutes Sunday, President Barack Obama said that he will not release post-mortem photos of Osama bin Laden to dispel conspiracy theories.

CNN and Fox News confirmed the decision Wednesday.

"It is very important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of someone who was shot in the head are not floating around as incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool," the president told CBS' Steve Kroft. "That's not who we are. We don't trot out this stuff out as trophies."

"The fact of the matter is that this is somebody who was deserving of the justice he received, and I think that Americans and people around the world are glad that he is gone, but we don't need to spike the football, and I think that given the graphic nature of these photos, it would create some national security risk, and I have discussed this with Bob Gates and Hillary Clinton and my intelligence teams, and they all agree."

See any difference between the two Presidents on this page?

Edited on Wed May-04-11 04:02 PM by RichGirl
Reading the Bush part reminded me that Bush didn't go after Saddam because of 9/11. He went after him because Saddam had tried to kill his Bush Sr! He put the country through that war, allowed hundreds of innocent Iraqis die, tanked our economy...just to avenge his daddy.

Obama would never put on a flightsuit, would never keep a "trophy" for a killing, would never allow others to suffer seek personal revenge.

...I Googled it yesterday, and anyone else wishing to do so can.

But my personal belief is that he saved his best Carla Faye Tucker laugh for the minute that trap door opened, and he probably DID watch it on a live feed.

Andy Card probably burned the footage onto a DVD for him so he could enjoy it over and over and over again while playing with Saddam's trophy gun.

#2) Whether to finish the daily bottle of Jack in the Oval Office or somewhere else.
#3) Whether or not to spike Laura's daily Xanax with something else

when they've intermittently been playing clips of Dubya talking about how he was going to get bin Laden -- oh, wait, it was about how unimportant bin Laden was, don't know where he is, don't care, don't spend time thinking about him -- I just shudder. Over the last two years I've become accustomed to a president I may sometimes disagree with, but who always expresses himself with eloquence, clarity and intelligence, and treats everyone, even his political adversaries, with respect. You know, a grown-up. Then along comes another clip of that smirking swaggering moron and I'm reminded those eight years really weren't just a bad dream.

Now to cap off my post... my kids got together and bought me tickets to see him on 5/25/11 in Clearwater, the last performance on this tour. His acoustical single man performance and "I'm So Excited" (not his song) but still, I bought the CD and it sounds like it will be FANTASTIC!

And they got me 2 seats in the 4th row, so that's even more exciting!

40. Great contrast - wonderful op
Yeah, one President is a mature, thoughtful leader the other is stuck in cowboy fantasyland, where he is to a genuine cowboy what he was in the mission accomplished photo to a war hero - a President playing dress up.

The degree to which the media strove to demand that Bush get partial credit for catching Osama shows how deep their allegiance to him really was and is.

41. First off, bu$h is a Connecticut cowboy. No offense, Connecticut, but
it was all political to make bu$h look like Captain Huff 'n Puff. Blather and bu$hit. bu$h is the second most important conservanazi hero behind ronnie raygun. The conservanazis want to make themselves look like the great protectors, but they are screwing up by bringing up bu$h. bu$h has an approval rating of probably less than 20% of Americans and probably less than that in the World.

President Obama acted like a great leader should. He stated his mission: get bin Laden. He formulated a plan to find bin Laden. The CIA and the US military, under the command of the CIC, President Obama, did just that. President Obama is intelligent, competent and a good leader. He is the most dangerous person in the World to the conservanazis. President Obama makes them look like the incompetent Third World thugs that they are.

So, Captain Huff'n Puff can show off Saddam's pistol and his autographed copy of "My Pet Goat". Big F*ckin' Deal. he dropped the ball and let Bin Laden escape from Tora Bora. That's most of his "legacy". bu$h is a totally incompetent POS.

bu$h moved out of that house as soon as he got out of office. he was tired of playing "rancher". about their viewpoints on taking or showing trophies. I care about the over 15% (the real number is hidden in gobbly gook)in this country. I care that more and more are showing up in tent cities. I care that more and more people are without health care. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

64. Uh, George? Generations from now, people will see the gun and say:
"Four thousand Americans died, and we wrecked our economy so you could put THAT on your wall?"

How quickly we forget: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7dPISoH6Ok&feature=channel_page

72. I assume you mean HT?
I had dinner with her April 9th on a quick trip Stateside. She was a little unsteady on her feet, but
in great form otherwise. I had spent the afternoon with Dr. D a few days before, but his schedule didn't
allow for a repeat get-together like last July. We'll try again this summer. I always give regards from
DU and other sites I'm on where she has friends! Remind me in July, as I'll probably see her in August,
although after her birthday (Aug. 4).

Look for her articles in the Falls Church News Press (www.fcnp.com) and leave comments on her columns!
Being a northern Virginia paper, it gets a predictable mixture of right-wing crackpot and educated
progressive. We could use a few more of the latter leaving comments!

I will always love her tenacity, miss her at the WH Press Briefings.

Bookmarked the site and will leave comments. Thanks for the link.

78. Thanks for bookmarking it!
I told her that some of those people who sent her the roses would come back to visit her in the fcnp site.
Despite all the stated good intentions, I think you'd be the first.

65. Excellent!! But, THE gun
Saddam's gun is NOT HIS! Unless he personally tracked him down and took the gun. imho The gun belongs in a museum or some military thing. Sorry about my stupidity about Military matters.

Again, imho bush is an asshole, a coward and a drunk.

70. As a red-headed step-child, I resent the comparison. BUT

I love the post!

PS, I really don't mind the red-headed step-child comment, but any rational person would resent having GW put in the same category. That's why I don't call him a slimeball- because that's an insult to slime! :hi:
