This Is Important: The Unemployment Insurance Extension Does NOTHING For The 99ers
Just to be clear, the "extension of the unemployment benefits" is an extension of the qualifying dates for the various tiers of benefits, and not additional weeks of benefits. There is no additional help for the so-called "99ers".

Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) comes in four tiers:
Tier I is for 20 additional weeks;
Tier II is for up to 14 weeks;
Tier III is for up to 13 weeks;
Tier IV is for up to 6 weeks.

As an example, if a worker was receiving Tier I benefits, they will be able to move to Tier II benefits with this proposed extension. Without the extension of the qualifying dates, workers would not be able to move to the next tier.

---snip
To repeat: this extension doesn't add additional weeks of benefits; it keeps the above structure in place for an additional 13 months.

1. And anyone making less than $20K will actually see a rise in their taxes.
Thanks Mr. President. At least Rush will be happy.

12. A few dollars a week. The rise is much higher if all tax breaks expire.
Thanks a lot you big progressive you.

15. I wonder if there could be a fix for this - for them, Obama's Make work pay is better than

the "tax holiday" - at least that is what one account says.

Given the motivation behind the Obama cuts, fixing this would be consistent with his goals.

17. Don't know where you are getting your calculations.
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 12:34 PM by former9thward
People making under 20k pay almost no income taxes. If you make 20k and are married and have 2 dependents you have no taxable income. If you are married with 0 dependents your taxable income is about $3000 if the cuts expire and $1000 if they don't.

19. It's pretty simple math.
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 12:40 PM by FBaggins
It's the end of the Making Work Pay tax credits... Replaced with the 2% cut in payroll taxes.

The $20k is for a single filer... Couples break even at $40k.

2. Important Point
Listening to the headlines the inference is that the long-term unemployed will be getting an extension. Very misleading coverage.

anymore, either. The resulting drop in the official # of unemployed will be hailed as a victory and evidence of an improved economy.

Yay for us. :sarcasm:

4. The UI list has nothing to do with who is
The survey doesn't even ask if you're receiving benefits.

5. Thank you so much for posting this!
I am a 99'er and scared shitless for my family's future right now. Your post needs to be reposted, repeated, retweeted, facebooked, KnR'd, shouted from the highest mountain top. We're talking at least 4 million people and their spouses and kids being thrown under the bus. People think 'unemployment" has been extended and all is fine. It's not. Get the message out. Everyone.It's not a real extension.

To leave out the 99ers, yet compromise with Boehner and McConnell....UGH.

6. This is one of the issues congress needs to attach to this compromise.
They need to milk this for all we can get. If we are forced to compromise then they are going to pay.

9. A slap in the face and a great big middle finger...
...from this president to those of us who, like me donated, supported, voted for and even lost a couple friends over supporting him and getting him elected. I threw my heart into 'hope and change" and "yes we can" only to find out that I and at least 4 million others are expendable. Millions,MILLIONS of people are being tossed. Any Dem but Obama for 2012 gets my vote.

13. Absolutely
I'm just one of the over 4 million affected by this. I'm devastated that my vote support and what little money I could afford to donate (after being spammed relentlessly) has been discarded so that rich bastards who do not need help or relief get theirs and I lose mine.

14. Welcome.
My brother's wife is in the same boat. It is vile that this is being swept under the rug. It disgusts me that people are tossing the 4 million out of the lifeboats--we've absolutely got to keep telling people. :hug: I'm so sorry baldingrockwarlord2, thank you for joining here and speaking out. We need you.

16. Let's hope Congress can come up with a better deal
before the end of the year. Does anyone believe that a Republican-controlled House and more Republican Senators are going to add another tier of benefits?
