An effective ad for seatbelts from the UK
http://embracethis.co.uk//

nuff said...and I read that 63% of Americans still admit to not wearing a seatbelt. Proof we are dumbed down as a nation.

5. Quite a contrast to the road safety adverts we get.
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 08:45 PM by steaa
(in N.Ireland)
Almost all of our road safety adverts focus on being hard hitting/graphic compared to the very artistic advert in the OP.

6. Welsh advert on Texting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0LCmStIw9E

This of course would never see the light of day on American TV.

13. No it wouldn't be aired here. Corporations own our airwaves.
Four minutes of airtime means money, and so profit will always rule over the welfare of human beings.

The people are given the illusion we own the airwaves. Every channel should be forced to air at least 30 minutes of public service announcements every day. This 4 minute ad would never make it here because the US is controlled by greed. And greed is the lifeblood of capitalism.

How many of the 40-50 thousand people killed every year in automobile accidents could be saved with ads like this? How much could it save us in the costs to repair all of the people injured, not to mention the loss of property?

We need a revolution in this country to take back our country from corporations and corrupt people. The Preamble of the Constitution begins with "We the people of the United States..." and if we do not stop the constant assault against us by the rich and powerful 'we the people' will never have any hope of a better future.

11. Beautiful ad! It was moving and sooo effective.
Thank you for sharing that. It should be aired all over the US and mandatory viewing in every high school and driving class. As a filmmaker I was profoundly affected by it.

16. Seatbelt laws are nothing more than authoritarian trash.
Edited on Sat Jun-05-10 06:08 PM by glen123098
They are an excuse for cops to pull you over and try to harass you. Cops should not be my nanny. If I want to risk my life, its my own choice, or at least should be in a sensible society. Strangely you can get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt in my state, but you can ride a motorcycle without a helmet. If that aint proof that's its all about the money.

19. Except when you fly from the seat and nail someone else.
Or get ejected through the windshield and slam into another car, through a window, etc. Yes, go ahead and risk your own life, but you don't have the right to risk the life of the other vehicle occupants.

23. Those are extremely rare cases, and not what the law was meant for.
It was meant to make it to give cops a reason to pull you over. There are many legal things I can do, which put other people at risk far more than not wearing a seatbelt. The law isn't consistent. For example in most areas I can go hunting while drinking. Thats far more dangerous for other people than driving without a seatbelt.

24. Please back up the statement that seatbelt laws exist "so that the cops
can pull you over."

Quite frankly, even if it's true, I have no probem with it.

25. The law is meant to save lives. And it's working.
And you shouldn't need a law to tell you how foolish it is to mix alcohol and guns, nor is one stupidity in law justification for more stupidity.

The very purpose of law is to remedy harm. To prevent, redress, or alleviate the effects of harm. If everyone wore their seatbelts, fewer Americans would die. The death toll on our national highways is on the decline. People wearing seatbelts are FAR less likely to die in traffic accidents; that's a fact.

I've seen the police with their seatbelt enforcement squad. You know what they do? They slow all the cars down where there's only one lane to get by, and they stand there in the street and look in your car. If they see you wearing a seatbelt, they wave you through. I drive a lot, and I've never been pulled over by a cop who wanted to check if I was wearing my seatbelt. Besides, anywhere I've been, cops don't really need a reason to pull you over. They can make something up; the judge is more likely to believe them than you anyway.

Seatbelts save lives. If people wore their seatbelts voluntarily, as I do, there would be no need for the law. The law was meant to save lives.

26. The law had nothing to do with giving cops "a reason to pull you over"
In fact, when the laws were enacted they usually provided that non-compliance alone was not sufficient grounds to make a stop. The laws reduced fatalities and injuries immediately, which was their purpose--and they did it at compliance levels far below 100 percent.

Your argument is always welcome...I love the anarchist module to a degree. But when things make sense, common, everyday sense for me and my family, I tend to agree with them, regardless of what authoritarian (real or imagined) regimes may be out there. Thank you for your passion though

30. yep, if it's all about safety how is that I can get fined for being unbelted
but the folks in the city bus right beside me on the freeway are perfectly OK standing up?

Or I can face serious charges if the kid in my vehicle is not strapped in but a kid in a school bus couldn't belt up even if they wanted to?

I think cars should have full harness-style seat belts and you're just asking for a trip through the front glass by not wearing it, but don't try to tell me a seat belt law which applies only to private vehicles is any more than another revenue generator or an excuse for the police to fuck with drivers.
