Overheard at the Post Office Today
A young woman with an adorable toddler was waiting in line behind me. A middle aged man got in line behind her and asked how old her son was. She answered he was 13 months but big for his age and that she and her husband were figuring someday he might be a linebacker. The man replied that's a good ambition, but perhaps he should reach for the stars and aspire to be President someday. Without missing a beat the young mother said, "No, I don't think so. The American people seem to think that's a job for a stupid person and my son is quite smart." The man laughed and said, "Yep we've got a moron at the helm. Maybe the American people will wake up and vote for someone up to the job next time. Sure hope so for the sake of our kids."

If strangers have no qualms about openly dissing the chimp in a public place, the tide has indeed turned. There was a long line in that place. Both people could be heard by everyone, and not one person spoke up to defend Bush. It was a wonderful moment. Just thought I'd share.

4. Poetically accurate, it is.
Could even be set to music, I think.

14. I think you're on to something.
Not musical but poetic: "Moron at the Helm" done to the rhythm and structure of "Casey at the Bat." Final line: "Dumbfuck moron had struck out."

3. Awesome....
I wish I had the nerve sometimes - I live in a somewhat purple area, still fear that someone is going to rear end me for my DU and John Edwards 08 bumper stickers. I also have my son's elementary school logo on the back...maybe I've been spared because it's a van and goodness, there may be children inside! Really though, I seen enough W04 and Bush/Cheney stickers still affixed around...My next sticker will be one of those with the slogan, I voted for Gore/Kerry, what's your excuse? idea. Humm, maybe not.

15. I don't know if it's lack of nerve.
It might just be being sensible. I don't have bumperstickers on, as a rule, anyway, but I would hesitate to put any on, because IMO most people who still support this administration are f'ing insane, and capable of anything.

I think there are exceptions - I know several people who are just too dumb and/or ill-informed to know any better, who wouldn't hurt a fly. I'm not talking about them, and half the time they probably don't even vote. The ones I'd be afraid of are the ones who rabidly support *shit and the boys - I find them terrifying.

19. My DH & I still have Kerry/Edwards 04 on our bumper - people
ask why we don't take it off - tell them we were Democrats then and still are. In fact, we've seen several other cars with theirs still on also. The new one (from the 08 convention) will be displayed by that one. It'll become a timewarp...

22. Whenever I see one of those, and they're rare, I leaflet their windshields.
This, mind you, involves parked cars I see with those offending bumper stickers. It's not vandalism, and certainly isn't what some of them have done to MY car (slashed tires, keyed doors). But in my mind, support of bush and/or bush/cheney, especially AFTER ALL THIS TIME, AND AFTER ALL WE NOW KNOW, does not come without consequences.

I found it on the internet and just added a paragraph in the middle. I had a coupla hundred printed up and I keep them in my trunk for easy application. Feel free!

Dear friend and fellow American:

I know how much you support President Bush and the war effort in Iraq. But I noticed that you haven’t signed up to fight yet. It might be because you are too busy, or maybe you just didn’t know how easy it is to join! I know you probably feel guilty about sending other young men and women off to die in your place, so I am sure you’ll take this opportunity to do the right thing:

Sign up for a tour or two in Iraq today!

You will enable some poor soldier who’s stuck there, exhausted, scared, isolated, frustrated, thirsty, poorly supplied, insufficiently armored, under constant threat, lied to about why he’s there and when he’s going to be released, and yearning to come home – to do just that: come home!

What could possibly be more patriotic?

What better way could there be to prove your devotion to President Bush?

“…And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land. God bless the U.S.A.”

Public Bush bashing is very new around here.

Her son went in the army last year and she said all her neighbors told her she was sending him off to die! Good for them!!

21. The Westside, Santa Monica included, is very liberal -
media used to not-so-jokingly refer to the "People's Republic of Santa Monica" when Tom Hayden represented the area in the state legislature.

Ventura County is more like Orange County - suburban types who reflexively vote "R" without thinking about it.

16. Heck, I said things like that
in public...in Nebraska. I also had a car plastered with anti-* bumper stickers. Sure, there were some negative comments, but a few times I'd actually have people complement me on them, randomly at red lights. Or honk, wave, flash a thumbs up or peace sign while passing me on the interstate.

It's actually pretty sad that it's not commonplace in Ventura County. It definitely happens often here in LA.

17. Lots of knuckledraggers in this part of Southern Cal.
Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 12:44 PM by LibDemAlways
The rep. in Congress from this area is former mayor of Simi Valley Elton Gallegly who is a Bush bootlicker of the 1st degree. He routinely gets re-elected with 65-70% of the vote. Tells you a lot about the demographics of the area.

18. The one cheery bit of good news today. Thanks.
I've been up to my armpits in the news coverage, since I work in TV. It's depressing. You cheered me up, not an easy task to perform. Thanks.
