3. I dispute those findings!
Washington DC is not a state. And there are an awful lot of dumb mofos there.

Interesting to that note that seven of the lowest ranking states are in the South, whereas eight of the ten highest are in the New England area

6. Yup. Something else I find amusing to say the least....
"Louisiana, the "least brainy" state, tied with Mississippi and Utah for the highest rate of involvement in religious and spiritual activities—something Martek considers a positive indicator for brain health."

10. I think they're going by who works there and not who lives there.

Although I know some smarter folks in the district...there are a whole lot of bad schools and severe dumbfuckery.

I think they are counting NOVA and nearby Maryland.

9. Correlation is not causation.
I suspect the bottom 10 states have low scores due to being more rural (plantation, farming, pasture, etc...) and more relaxed lifestyle. High test scores are likely not required as frequently as higher populated states. Also, rural areas tend to harbor more republicans for whatever reason (they all think they're independent or something). The link between being in the bottom 10 and being a red state is not direct causation, but rather related simply by local geography.

Likewise, people with degrees tend to have skilled jobs requiring degrees. These jobs are primarily located in large cities and higher populous areas like the northeastern and coastal states. People in cities (more of a social demographic) tend to sway democratic so it's no surprise states w/ higher population densities are blue.

I suspect there are many republicans with college degrees in Business and Applied Sciences... and odds are they will be in more populated states as well. IMO, being republican is not a question of intelligence, but societal opinion & morality.

17. Well...
If it's a principle of Republicanism to de-fund the public schools and universities (and it is), then you've got direct causation. It stands to reason that states that have suffered under Republican rule for a generation or two, with all the Republicans' disregard for learning and the intellect, wouldn't have particularly impressive records of educational achievement. You gets what you pays for.

18. Or perhaps there's a greater chance that wingnuts are taking over mroe of these school boards
and pushing their agendas of "Abstinence Only", "School Prayer", "Intelligent Design" and not creating agenda's that keep their states competitive.

I remember a few years back, a school board in Dover, PA tried to push Intelligent Design on the students. Six months later 8 of the 9 members of the school board were ousted in the schoolboard election. However, in Red States you'd find the opposite reaction.

I personally do not care what parents teach their kids when they are not at school NOR do I care what they learn at private schools. But our public schools need to focus on Education. There is plenty of time outside of school hours for children to learn (from their parents) about faith.

11. Intelligent, highly competitive people
are drawn to suburban Maryland and the Washington DC area. This leads to extreme cutthroat competitiveness in local schools -- the "My kid is more gifted and talented than yours" syndrome. My very bright but not Harvard scholarship level daughters barely held their own here. I'm sure they would have been considered academic superstars in other parts of the country. I can't stand the hyper-competitiveness here in Montgomery County.

It would be depressing if these slack-jaws were NOT at the end of the spectrum.
