I grew up in SW VA, just about 10 miles from the NC border and, fake accent notwithstanding, he never really had the support of Appalachian pro-labor people, not in any meaningful way. He never did jack shit for his constituents. He might have argued that, hey, as VP he might have had more power to do so...

in retrospect, I wish Kerry had picked ANYONE else. Gephart, Dean, Hillary, you name it. Anyone else would have helped more, and if Kerry had won free and clear (i.e. by a margin that couldn't be stolen) in '04, I sincerely believe there are, at least, a thousand people in New Orleans who would've been saved. And every single of one of those lives is, as the Jewish tradition has it, the WHOLE world.
