Poll finds Newsom trailing Brown even in S.F.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi...009/08/24/BA6K19BUI1.DTL

Not only is San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom trailing state Attorney General Jerry Brown statewide in the Democratic race for governor, he's pulling up short with the very voters who know him best - San Franciscans

On the statewide level, a poll taken last week of 600 likely Democratic voters by the Sacramento firm Moore Methods showed Brown in the lead for the 2010 primary, 49 percent to 20 percent.

A second poll by David Binder of 423 likely Democratic voters in San Francisco - where Newsom has enjoyed years of record-high approval ratings - has him trailing even at home.

The Binder poll, taken Aug. 15-18, showed Brown leading Newsom 51 percent to 34 percent among San Franciscans who have either made up their minds or who are "leaning" in one direction. Only 8 percent said they were undecided, with the rest saying they wouldn't vote for either candidate.

The numbers in the Binder poll also show Brown ahead of Newsom for every age bracket over 30 and in every San Francisco supervisorial district except the Marina, which Newsom represented on the board before being elected mayor in 2003.

1. If I were a San Francisco resident or I worked in the city, I'd not want to lose Newsome.
Can you imagine what a great position to be in: Brown as Governor and Newsome as your Mayor?

2. Newsom is a terrible mayor
His one and only trick is marriage equity while he's pretty much neglected every other municipal service. We never see him in town anymore and does town hall meetings everywhere but here. I'm tempted to vote for him so we can get rid of him.

4. From what I read on the SF healthcare plan it is a complete waste of money
They have increased taxes, but those who are paying those taxes, couldn't even qualify for the SF healthcare plan

11. To be fair
It started as the economy went into the toilet. I always find it interesting that the first programs to be cut are thoe that people need most in times like this.

12. Ditto. He tried to shove those bad voting machines down our throats,
and his homeless policy is awful AND dishonest. I'm glad he stepped up for marriage equality but that's about the only thing he's managed to do right.

3. If either Newsom or Brown are the Democratic candidates for Govenor, we will lose
the election against Whitman or Campbell

I was hoping we would get someone else in the race for the Democrats, but it doesn't look that way

5. I'm not too worried about Whitman.
She's running on her Ebay experience, and that's already beginnign to fray (Ebay has had to shed a lot of her pet projects since she left, just to stay operational). Plus, the entire marketing concept that we'll have a governor who's claim to fame is selling off assets to make money hasn't even been brought to bear yet. She's a poor speaker, and she's fairly unattractive (sorry, but in todays media driven world, that DOES mean something).

I'm more worried about Campbell. Business dean, economist, and former State Finance Director. If he markets himself right, he could be a major challenger by offering himself up as someone who can help straighten out state finances. Luckily, the Thugs don't seem to be rallying behind him at this point.

10. Campbell doesn't have the money, and Whitman is considered moderate
politically speaking.

You are correct about her speaking abilities, and the rest, but I still wish we had someone more formidable

7. I agree
We need a far better candidate than those two. Newsom would lose by a landslide as he has almost nothing positive he can talk about except mariiage for all. Too many of his policies have failed or he has failed to lead.

13. I think Brown will get it. And we need to win it somehow.

He'd be a good governor and especially good in these tight times.

14. Either one of them would be an improvement on Angelides the developer
or Bustamente the... what exactly did that guy do to get the nomination, again?

My big concern with Brown is that Oakland was in the tank when he got there and it was in the tank when he left. :(

16. If I were still there as a resident, my vote would go to Brown.
I can understand his appeal to California voters.

He's a good man.
