My wife's boss is one of those Jesus Loving Family Values Crowd People.

With last weeks birth of our Granddaughter we are doing everything possible to get out to Seattle 2000 miles away to meet this new member of our family. Well I just happened to luck out and get four days off at the end of this week without asking but my wife is another story....in July she gave her boss a heads up as to this event and he said just to give him 24 hours notice and there would be no problem...well we decided against going this past weekend because I only had two days off and my wife wont travel that distance by herself......Well we are planing to go this Friday and Sat so today she filled out a vacation request form using a couple of floating personal days to cover her...Her BOSS told her DONT COUNT ON IT....we are short staffed which is BULLSHIT....

I have talked to several people who live in Europe and perhaps after Obama gets done with health care maybe a bold move should be made to address the lack of time off we US citizens get each year....I have heard most of Europes employers are mandated to give at least 28 days vacation plus national holidays and a bank set aside for family/medical emergency's.... I think this should be addressed.

spoke about the way the French citizens are treated... quite a comparison, let me tell you. And sad. We work our fool selves to death for crumbs. Other people work just as hard, and get to enjoy their lives. We're so beaten down and angry. And those idiots running around, screaming like idiots at townhall meetings just show to what depths we're all beaten down. They are actually fighting the corporation and the rich man's fight for them. Beaten down like dogs, they are. Just like dogs.

5. The French work week is 35 hours. Ours is over 50

most people I know work over 60 hours per week. We work longer hours than they do by far, but we're no substantially more productive. Do they work just as hard? No. Are their lives more enjoyable and fulfilling? Yes.

Since we're substantially not more productive, their 35 hours are far more productive.

3. If I was your wife, I would have a VERY terse conversation with...

"Mr. Family Values" and I would remind him of his previous promise to me, and then I would quickly ask HIM how he would feel, not being able to see HIS grandchild.

And I would end that conversation with a "so I'll see ya next week, right?"

I've been a manager for a long time now, and I've discovered that if I have told someone "no problem" that means "no problem".

Or else, I ain't worth two dead flies as a manager.

I first noticed this while in North Carolina in 1980. In the old days, they had slaves. They were predominantly black and the Master provided food, shelter, clothing and health care in exchange for their labor. Now, they don't discriminate. All workers are treated as slaves. The big difference is that they pay most of us subsistence wages and we have to provide our own food, shelter, clothing and health care. They still act like "Massa" though. Your needs are way less important than their profit.
