"...the fringe crazy people on BOTH sides need to get out of the way..."
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 11:28 AM by SoCalDem
So sayeth, Dr.Nancy..

I know that the Birthers & Death Panel folks are the right aide of crazy, but Dear Dr. Nancy,pray-tell, who are the "crazies of the other side of your "both sides"?

are the crazies:

single payer folks?
universal care folks?
union folks?
people without guns at town hall meetings?
just plain folks who don't scream at the tops of their lungs every time a legislator is within eyesight?

Just tossing out (in the name of fair&balanced) terminology like "crazies on both sides", lessens the fact that the CRAZIES are on ONE side..and we all know which side that is..

Wanting health care that every other civilized country already has, and HAS had for DECADES, does not make one a "crazy".

4. Maybe the ones who think single-payer will be 'free'?
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. (TANSTAAFL)

We'll all pay for whatever reform comes to pass, in one way or another. I just hope we'll be paying
less for healthcare than we are now.

8. I pay 250 a month for meds
If the 250 included an occasional doctor visit, emergency care, and meds, I'd be a lot happier, but right now the plan is "Don't get sick." x(

11. War is free, but healthcare isn't?
It's our money.

We should decide how it's spent.

14. The whole "free" thing has been a strawman from day one.
NOTHING is free. We have all heard how Canadians, British people, German people, etc. "pay nothing when they go to the doctor".. They are NOT saying it was FREE...just that they pay nothing at the point of service, because we are taxed along the way, in the form of "pre-payment" for services needed at a future time.

That's not the same as "free".

20. I just don't understand why ANYONE would be against
just paying a higher tax, and then resting assured that whenever you get sick, you get care.. How "scary" is that?

and what many simpletons don;t realize, is that if their medical care were financed through taxes, they would not HAVE to pay insurance premiums or have it deducted from their paycheck, in addition to the higher tax.. the money they are paying NOW would go to pay part (most?) of the tax...

and any pay raise would go to THEM, not to offset a rise in insurance premium..

I swear, a 10 yr old could understand it..

instead of profits, advertising, etc.

Better value for your health care dollars.

24. I'd still rather pay $700 to $1,00 more in taxes a year than pay
$6,000 to $8,000 in premiums, deductibles, co-pays and for health care not covered by insurance companies.

12. Well, we do have a few of them out there
from animal rights groups who release lab animals to starve on the street to activists who burn down condos being constructed in wilderness areas. Their crimes are against property instead of people, but we've got 'em.

The real danger to this country or any country is the far right, though. Every single failed democracy has been toppled by the far right. There are no historical exceptions.

I'm keeping an eye on Chavez, though. He might be the first if he doesn't watch it.

I've never seen any of them, in fact, unless she's moaning about people who want single payer.

I mean, think of the horror of all those people holding suddenly worthless health insurance stock! There will be blood in the streets!

5. LaRouche & his ilk are not really even "left"
Aren't they just run-of-the-mill libertarians who don't like ANY government? That does not make them "left", it makes them selfish, childish wannabee anarchists.

I don;t see any left leaning organization , at all embracing anything they favor.

but the graphics are not fucking helping this debate. they're absurd, and as you said, childish.

10. It's just the 'they're all the same' argument
As soon as you say something they can't argue away that's what they fall back on. Both sides are ths same. They're all alike.

It's a sure way to tell you've just scored points.

Uninformed or even just underinformed people will cling to the idea that 'both sides are the same' no matter what the evidence actually shows.

I have lost respect for many an educated person due to their habit of trying to appear balanced, despite reality.

29. ELF, PETA, Naderites, Anarchists, I could go on and on about
some of the far-left radicalists who make the rest of us look bad. As far as the Health Care issue - there are those who are unwilling not just to compromise, but to even listen to other points-of-view. They believe they are absolutely right and everyone else are wrong. And all too often they are willing to throw our own leaders who are fighting for us under the bus rather than focus on the ones who are the real problem. Simply because our leaders are the ones who are willing to listen and compromise when necessary.

I won't say that there are plenty of good examples right here on DU. At least, I won't SAY it. ;)

and anytime one of the enviro-activists makes news, the left's leaders are the FIRST to disown them..

31. Very true. There's no doubt the problems with passing HCR is
primarily the RW. However, the radical left who demonizes those trying to pass it are hindering the process if not to as great a degree.

However, now that the RW has made it perfectly clear they want to block ANY kind of reform, it has cleared the way for less of a push for "bi-partisanship".

But Pelosi is correct in that the extreme Left is muddying the waters. It would be much easier if we could provide a more united front.

32. I've had it with the "both sides" meme. I challenge it every time now.
When I ask where are the left wing crazies I usually get "Unibomber" or an example from the Vietnam War era. When I point out that the Unibomber was doing his thing, what, almost 20 years ago and the Vietnam War has been over for 35 years and ask them to please give me a more recent example, nobody can give me an answer...
