It's just a conspiracy by the IAU & Neil deGrasse Tyson that keeps it from its rightful place!

(And the IAU. They also think it isn't a planet. But they don't count!)

35. speaking of "uranus," does anyone remember when newscaster types began pronouncing
it "yer'-uh-nus" instead of "yer-a'-nus"?

i swear the second was used universally when i was a kid, but somewhere along the line i started hearing the first in the media - but people told me the first had always been the "right" pronunciation.

SPECIAL REPORT: Swine Flu

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- The Florida Department of Health wants to put the swine flu (special report) scare into perspective. There are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Florida so far. However, thousands of people die each year from common strains of influenza.

According to the state health department web site, Florida averaged 2,477 deaths per year from the flu and pneunomia between 2005 and 2007. Pinellas County averaged 150 deaths per year in that time period. Hillsborough County averaged 86 deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates 36,000 people die annually in the United States from the flu. A disproportionately large number of Floridians are in the group. The flu is far more dangerous for the very young and very old. Florida has more deadly cases of the flu than most states because of its elderly population.

A state health department spokesman told ABC ActionNews.com this afternoon they received 50 samples of possible swine flu cases in Florida. None of them tested positive.

Published: April 28, 2009 at 11:14 PM

ATLANTA, April 28 (UPI) -- There have been no U.S swine flu fatalities so far, but since January more than 13,000 people have died of complications from seasonal flu, officials said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's weekly report said no fewer than 800 flu-related deaths were reported in any week between Jan. 1-April 18, the most recent week for which figures were available, CNN reported Tuesday. Seasonal flu is expected to keep killing hundreds of people every week for the rest of the year.

The researchers looked at deaths in the 122 largest U.S. cities with about 9 out of 10 of the deaths among people age 65 or older, the reports said.

Dr. Brian Currie, medical director at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, said most times the elderly already have health problems that the flu makes worse.

"Regular influenza can be taxing," Currie told CNN. "It causes their underlying disease to decompensate and then they don't have the reserves to get through it. While it may not be the direct cause listed on the death certificate, it certainly contributed."

Worldwide annual death from seasonal flu is estimated between 250,000 and 500,000, the CDC report said.

One of the reasons medical experts are concerned about swine flu is that many of the more than 150 who died in Mexico have been young and otherwise healthy.

44. Swine Flu Update
http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2009/04/swine-flu-update">Swine Flu Update - Mother Jones
— By Kevin Drum | Wed April 29, 2009 10:59 PM PST

It turns out the swine flu outbreak may be a little bit less deadly than we thought. Here's the latest from the Los Angeles Times:

As the World Health Organization raised its infectious disease alert level Wednesday and health officials confirmed the first death linked to swine flu inside U.S. borders, scientists studying the virus are coming to the consensus that this hybrid strain of influenza — at least in its current form — isn't shaping up to be as fatal as the strains that caused some previous pandemics.

....When the current virus was first identified, the similarities between it and the 1918 flu seemed ominous.

Both arose in the spring at the tail end of the flu season. Both seemed to strike people who were young and healthy instead of the elderly and infants. Both were H1N1 strains, so called because they had the same types of two key proteins that are largely responsible for a virus' ability to infect and spread.

Richard Webby, an influenza virologist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, told the Times, "This virus doesn't have anywhere near the capacity to kill like the 1918 virus," which claimed an estimated 50 million victims worldwide.

Among those 50 million were my grandmother's two sisters. So this is good to hear. But wash your hand anyway, OK?
