Racist RWers Talk About Obama's "Banana Republic" Because We All Know What Monkeys Like To Eat
Have you caught that little bit of racism? Obama = Banana Republic = Monkeys eat bananas = Obama is a monkey.

Never believe for a second that they don't choose their terminology carefully, especially when they're sending a message to the racists who support them.

1. Uh, isn't Banana Republic a term for shitty, junta-ruled South American countries?
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 12:13 AM by That Is Quite Enough
Or am I missing something from the Republican usage of the term that would imply that it's being used in a bigoted fashion towards Obama?

EDIT: FYI, I haven't heard anyone using this term in relation to Obama, so if you could point me towards whoever's been spewing this, it'd be appreciated.

3. Yes - isn't it cute how cleverly the pivoted the term to express their racism?

4. I guess. Associating Obama with military dictatorships is a fetish of theirs, it seems.
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 12:17 AM by That Is Quite Enough
It pisses me off though, because of just how ignorant they are about what ACTUAL dictatorships are like.

If they think a Democratic administration is torture, an actual totalitarian system would blow their minds.

8. All the RW outlets were using this on Friday.
And, btw, most of the juntas in South America only existed because of the US government. There is nothing inherently undemocratic or shitty about South America. Thanks!

5. I think that might be a stretch.
I'll admit it's a ridiculous comparison, but my guess is they are just throwing meaningless politican terms against the wall and hoping something sticks.

14. Undoubtedly they devised it and distributed it.
However, I think it's designed to give the common image of a banana republic--that is to say, a petty dictatorship, with a self-aggrandizing leader mismanaging a shaky and poorly built state-centered economy. Those are the images they have been pushing as regards Obama's Presidency, after all.

I highly, highly doubt the term was chosen with the intent that viewers would play six-degrees-of-stream-of-consciousness with one of the words in the phrase.

7. How many DUers called Bush "the Chimp" for 8 years?
So I don't think we should go there. . .

16. We're stuck with the fact that we used a similar term on Bush for years.
The distinction would be lost for too many people.

17. Yeah, Bush really did look like a chimp
And he wasn't black, either, so it wasn't a racist thing. Just a commentary on his looks and his mental capacity.

I'm still pinching myself - Bush is really gone!!

13. That isn't racism. "Banana republic" is a pre-existing term that is commonly used,
and the etymology has nothing to do with monkeys, but rather is a reference to the one-dimensional, single-cash-crop economy common to the unstable, small, corrupt nations covered by the term.

impunity for torturers and others who commit crimes against humanity -- a prime feature of banana republics. If so, I agree with them wholeheartedly.

But the Repukes just gave a Banana Republic and they always accuse us for things they do, so this is right up their alley.
