OT: Why you should all root for the Steelers on Sunday
1. Steelers owner Dan Rooney campaigned hard for Barack Obama, both in the PA primary and in the General Election. The Bidwell family, which owns the Cardinals, are died-in-the-wool Republicans and donated heavily to John McCain.

2. Barack Obama's second-favorite team (after the Bears) is the Steelers.

3. Pittsburgh is in a blue state, Arizona is a red state.

4. Dan Rooney is the man who instituted the "Rooney Rule" in the NFL, which requires teams that have a head coach opening to interview at least one minority candidate. And Dan Rooney walked the walk, interviewing and hiring Mike Tomlin to succeed Bill Cowher two years ago.

5. It was reported this morning that over 41,000 passengers are flying out of Pittsburgh International Airport to Tampa-St. Pete today. Over 200 flights. It is estimated that less than half of them currently have tickets. That kind of passion doesn't exist anywhere else in the world of professional sports. Steeler Nation is unrivaled by any other fan base in America. When you watch the game on Sunday, you will see 80% of the stadium in black-and-gold.

6. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has posted an average 20% gain in the year following a Steelers Super Bowl victory. What makes this all the more amazing, is that the first four times were in 1975, 1976, 1979, and 1980. Those four years were the only years between 1970 and 1982 in which the market posted a double-digit gain. The most recent victory, 2006, was the year in which the largest gain during the Bush years occurred. Black and gold victories are good for your 401K. Don't worry if it doesn't seem to make logical sense - you just don't mess with that kind of mojo. ;-)

7. The Terrible Towel(tm) has been photographed in space (on the shuttle), at the top of Mount Everest, at the South pole, and in the window of a fighter jet flying over Afghanistan

Join Steeler Nation on Sunday... you know you want to.

;-)

This is the same bullshit justification used to root for the Red Sox over the Rockies in 2007 and the Phillies over the Rays in 2008 and so on and so forth. Look, just root for whoever the fuck you want to root for and lets have it at that.

I'd rather just watch the game.

94. Yeah I certainly don't care that there are no cheerleaders....
I just also think its a little superficially judgemental to consider it a "point" against a team if they have well paid people who freely choose to do a job with good benefits.

At least when you're talking about pornography, prostitution or several other forms of sex work you can at least make the argument that too many women are economically forced against their will into work they do not desire, and that makes it exploitative and unjust.

Can't really make that argument about professional cheerleaders...

154. Professional????
I knew one of the Honey Bears back in the late 70's. (Believe it or not, she was a chemistry student of mine in a graduate pharmacology program. So, there's no sterotypes here!)

But, she wasn't a professional! She was making about $20 a week! Yeah, something like $160 per season. That was barely enough to cover the cost of gas.

At least the uniforms were paid for, but the Honey Bears weren't professionals. I was playing in a band at the time and i was making twice that (as one of 5) for every gig!

They weren't professionals. Just good looking women given a chance to dance in public without taking their clothes off.

I'm sorry that my belief that people can have a lot of different opinions about what women should be allowed to do or not do and what is or isn't exploitative, right or wrong, etc. is grounds for you to decide to put me on ignore.

I, for one, recognize the history of and ongoing dangers of exploitation in our highly partiarchical society. But I also recognize how puritanical attitudes about sexuality have also been long standing tools of repression and domination as well.

You may disagree, but surely there's some room for discussion and debate.

119. NFL cheerleading never made a whole lot of sense to me
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 04:20 PM by Hippo_Tron
In college (and to a certain extent high school) the cheerleaders do acrobatics that require a great degree of athletic ability and it's very impressive to watch. In the NFL they just dance around. And it's not like you can even see the scantily clad women unless you have very close seats. I'm usually focused on scarfing down my pizza and drinking my beer when the cheerleaders come on the field in NFL games.

However, since I so roundly LOATHE the Cardinals and their nasty Organization, I, as an Arizonan, will be cheering for Pittsburgh.

The Bidwells suck.
Fundie, Bush-loving, science-despising Kurt Warner sucks.
The Cardinals suck. Now that they've managed to Gump their way into a Super Bowl, it will only take that much longer for them to be run out of town so that we can get an expansion team.

Gak! Go Steelers!!!

107. I'm Rooting For The Cardinals BECAUSE of Warner.
Because he's a future Hall of Fame phenom. Because his is one of the greatest rags to riches to rags to riches stories in sports. Because he's a great example of how not to give up on something even though all looks lost everyone says you can't do it. Because he was a (if not the)major force in helping the Cardinals move from perennial also-ran to Super Bowl participant. ..you know. ...football stuff. I loved him with the Rams. I felt for him when he sat the bench with the Giants and early on with the Cards. Never once did a give a rats behind what his religious or political affiliation was. The best part of all this for me is that after all this time I finally get to rub it in the faces of all the people who told me he was done.

79. That is why I only watch Division II college football
And until that gets to the point where it is televised it is pretty much real sport. 99% of the players have nothing but the 4 years of college ball and then they get a real job.

And I though it was pretty clean of corruption until the Div II National Championship this last December when the official called a fumbled ball for the team leading to insure the game would not go into overtime.

Yes BCS football is just as corrupt as pros

but I've been a die hard Browns fan since 1963. It's physically impossible for me to root for the Steelers no matter how good, noble, wonderful, etc., they might be. If the Browns ever win the SuperBowl after going 14-2 with both losses to the Steelers, I would consider the season a disappointment.

I was supporting the Steelers anyway, for two reasons: 1. I still haven't forgiven the Cardinals for knocking my Panthers out of the playoffs. 2. Pittsburgh winning will mean they have more rings than the Cowboys -- I was a Redskins fan before the Panthers came to town and the Redskins are still my second favorite team. I will always despise the Cowboys. :grr: Your reasons will make me root for the Steelers even harder. GO STEELERS! :patriot:

How limbaugh-like.

If you pick your sports teams based on your own political idealogy, and root for the failure of others because you don't like their politics, you're not a true sports fan. Some of us check our idealogy at the door and enjoy a well played game, no matter who is playing.

But he now has a platform from which to warp brazillions of impressionable young minds, years after his prior fifteen minutes ended at the hands of an upstart team called the New England Patriots. As a cantankerous old (okay, middle-aged) New Englander (raised, anyway), I believe that what you do at 11:00 on Sunday morning is your own doggone business, and not a sound bite.

Also, take ten percent of whatever humongous bonus he'd get for winning, and place it directly in the hands of some gay- and woman-hating church, 'cause that's what he'll likely do.

As a kid I worshiped Cal Ripken but even back then I could have cared less what his opinion was on anything other than baseball. Kids are not nearly as dumb as you think them to be.

As I said before, unless he's actively expressing hate towards other people under the guise of his religion, he's perfectly fine believing what he believes and stating as such.

FWIW, Ripken never professed any political views, right wing or left wing. I think he did agree to be something stupid like "baseball ambassador to China" for President Bush in a lame attempt by the latter to try to be popular but never actually talked politics himself.

But even if he had, he's an athlete, and a damn good one at that, and one can divorce one's political viewpoints from the enjoyment you get in watching a skilled artisan pull his trade. That's one thing I never understood about conservatives who vowed never to watch a movie with a big liberal actor in it, or buy an album with a big liberal singer. In the end, you're just depriving yourself of good, talented entertainment and it's your own darn fault for it.

From everything I've heard, he seems like a decent enough person who happens to have a strong religious belief. Unless he starts spouting some serious Fred Phelps hate crap about God hating gay people or something of the like, I'm not going to hold the fact he is a "fundie" against him as a human being.

He has certain viewpoints on the stem cell issue that I certainly disagree with, but unless he takes those positions because he's some sort of sadist who gets kicks off of seeing human suffering, then that's not going to make me think less of him as a human being.

Plus if Detroit got rid of him he had to be good.

Jay

In 1994, he signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears, and spent the next five years with the club, starting for most of 1995 and 1997, passing for over 3,000 yards in each of those seasons.

Kramer holds the Bears' record for highest career passer rating (80.7), and owns their single-season records for attempts, completions and yards.

82. I will be pulling for the Cards....
As a Democrat, I have a thing for the underdogs.
The athletic performance of Warner, Fitzgerald, and the team performance of the Cardinals during the playoffs has been inspiring.
Other than that, I have no political or geographical allegiance to either team.
You could say that my choice is completely non-partisan.

On Sunday, I will be joining the Redbirds.

Which immediately makes me a fan. There's really nothing to that I guess, but whatever... I'm rooting for Pitt though I wish the Bears would get to the super bowl again soon.

97. I normally pull for the underdog, but I can't pull for Kurt Warner in this one
Steelers it is for me, if only to keep Kurt Warner away from the mic and his mouth shut. The guy takes any opportunity he can to turn a sports moment into a Sunday sermon and to throw some political spin onto his whole religion schtick.

I'm sorry Larry Fitzgerald, I hope you understand.

106. Cardinal player disses Obama when told Prez rooting for Steelers
It's not actually a quote because I don't have it written down word for word. But my favorite thing I heard all day was from defensive tackle Darnell Dockett. A reporter told him President Barack Obama will be rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers. To sum up Darnell's comments, he said he would like to physically injury President Obama's face in a game of one on one basketball. Dockett also went on to say that he would easily beat the President in a pick up game. Whether you like our new President or not I think you have to appreciate those comments by Darnell, especially if you're a Cardinals fan. That one just made me laugh because it was unexpected.

126. How many Steelers jerseys do you see on the streets of America, as compared to Red Sox/Yankees hats?
I mean, sure, most of those people are fuckwit bandwagoners who watch annoying teams because ESPN tells them to, but I'd count them as fans, even if they're the type of fans that ought embarrass teams.

129. Actually... there are two things

1. Steelers merchandise is the highest selling in the NFL... even last year, it was higher than Patriots or Giants merchandise

2. 4 of the 5 highest rated football games this past season were Steelers games.

Those facts are despite the fact that Pittsburgh is the 23rd largest market in the NFL.

134. BTW KO is interviewing Tomlin tonight on Countdown
And though the Steelers had a Monday night game against the Skins in D.C. election eve, Tomlin after getting into Pittsburgh at 3am stayed up so he could be in line at the polls election morning to make sure he got to vote for Obama.

Also Tomlin walks the walk. He didn't settle in some ritzy Pittsburgh suburb, but instead moved in to the city and sends his kids to Pittsburgh public schools.

He reminds me in ways of Obama. He certainly has that No drama Obama approach coaching his team.

165. Not really.
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 01:13 AM by Occam Bandage
The "bread-and-circuses" phenomenon was a form of social bribery, in which Roman nobles, leaders, and political aspirants attempted to harness the all-powerful and fickle plebian mob by offering free feasts and enormous sporting extravaganzas, paid for out of their pockets, sometimes in hopes the mob would remember their generosity during a later power play, sometimes for the adulation as its own end, and sometimes as a display of wealth and one-upsmanship.

Modern sports, on the other hand, are very profitable, and are held purely for that profit. They are not backed by politicians nor are they attempts by billionaires to buy affection at personal cost. They are not held to appease a mob that effectively controls the keys to an empire. Really, the one and only thing that modern sporting events and Roman circuses have in common is that some form of competition is enjoyed by some viewers.

174. 7A. The Terrible Towel(TM) supports a program for people with disabilities
http://www.disabilityscoop.com/2009/01/30/steelers-terrible-towel/1929

The golden glow of towels waving in the stands at the Super Bowl this Sunday will be supporting far more than the Pittsburgh Steelers playing on the field. Proceeds from the $7 towels go to support people with developmental disabilities.

The so-called Terrible Towels are icons of Steelers games hailing from the 1970s when the team’s radio announcer encouraged fans to bring gold and black towels to wave at games as a way to up the excitement level. The towels quickly became a staple at games and soon were trademarked and sold.

In 1996, Myron Cope, the
(iconic, now sadly deceased -Ed.) radio announcer, gave the trademark for the Terrible Towel to the Allegheny Valley School, a group of schools and group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania. Cope’s son Danny has mental retardation and autism and lives in a group home the organization operates.

Since then, the Allegheny Valley School has received more than $2.5 million from the towels, about a $1 million of which came from the 2005 season when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. So hopes are high for this year. The funds are used to purchase high-end wheelchairs, sensory programs, adaptive communication devices and other items for residents, reports The New York Times.
