SHAME - pics

Protestors hold signs behind Richard Fuld, Chairman and Chief Executive of Lehman Brothers Holdings, as he takes his seat to testify at a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the causes and effects of the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, on Capitol Hill in Washington, October 6, 2008. Fuld told Congress on Monday that U.S. banking regulators knew exactly how Lehman was pricing its distressed assets and about its liquidity in the months before its collapse.

WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 06: Medea Benjamin (R) of Code Pink protests as Chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers Richard Fuld Jr. (L) takes his seat prior to a hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Capitol Hill October 6, 2008 in Washington, DC. The hearing was to examine the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Members of the group "Code Pink" wave signs as Richard S. Fuld Jr., chief executive officer of Lehman Brothers, arrives to testify before the US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee October 6, 2008 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Fuld told the committee, "I take full responsibility for the decisions that I made and for the actions that I took. " He defended his actions as "prudent and appropriate" based on information he had at the time. "I feel horrible about what happened," he said. Committee chairman Rep.Henry Waxman D-CA,questioned Fuld on whether it was true he took home some $480 million in compensation since 2000, and asked: "Is that fair?".

19. Information Fail (copied from another thread)
Fuld isn't employed by Barclays. In case of confusion, that's a Barclay's Bank logo you have on him and all the stormtroopers, but it's entirely inappropriate since he's not on their payroll.

Amusing Photoshop, but also quite misleading.

Barclays has bought a big chunk of Lehman brothers, but Fuld doesn't work for them; he still works for Lehman, and is currently administering their bankruptcy procedures (most of the subsidiaries have been sold off to other banks, but Lehman technically still exists).

Personally, I think Fuld is getting a really bad rap. It looks to me that, as the smallest bank on Wall Street, it was decided that they could safely be thrown to the wolves and Lehman was deliberately shafted by the Fed and the other large banks. For example, Fuld begged the Fed to allow him to reorganize Lehman as a commercial bank; they refused, but a mere week after Lehamn declared bankruptcy, they allowed JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs to do exactly that.

So Fuld made a lot of money over the last 8 years. I have no problem with that; Lehman used to be a star bank and had an outstanding reputation, punching far above its weight. Fuld worked there for 40 years, starting out as an ordinary clerk and eventually rising to become CEO...which is how you're supposed to do it. Now he's being scapegoated for a lot of stuff that was never in his control to begin with. He's not broke, so I don't feel too sorry for him, but at the same time I think he is catching a lot of blame right now for the action of others.

don't get distracted: Dick Fuld is not the big bad evil genius of Wall Street, he's the designated whipping boy. As best I can tell, Lehman went down because they actually tried to do things by the book.

You might find this interesting: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry...
Lehman Brothers may have been defrauded out of more than $350 million (£175.8 million) in an alleged Japan-based scam of “epic proportions and sophistication”. Tokyo-based investigators said that the alleged confidence trick, which involved meetings at the headquarters of one of Japan’s most famous corporate names, could have been pulled on many more Japanese and Wall Street investment houses.

Lehman Brothers has already filed a criminal complaint and today plans to sue the Marubeni Corporation over its refusal to pay back the money apparently loaned with its backing to a now-bankrupt fund at the heart of the alleged fraud. Lehman’s exposure, which emerged when the fund failed to make a payment in late February, has triggered two other regulatory inquiries. The Financial Services Agency is understood to be looking into Marubeni’s involvement, while the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission has begun investigating the case on suspicion of insider trading by contacts of the alleged fraudsters.

There's a lot more to this than meets the eye.

21. Yes?
Your cartoon shows Fuld with the Barclay's logo on his hcest. But Fuld isn't going to be getting a check for Barclays, ever. They're not giving him a job. Barclays has bought assets from Lehman Brothers in a forced sale (including their HQ, where Fuld no longer works); Those assets aren't part of Lehman any more. Fuld still works for Lehmans, most of whose assets have since been sold off. Why do you think he's working for Barclays?

It's like if YOU went bankrupt, and your house was sold to one person, your car was sold to someone else, and your computer to a third person. you're left with a few sticks of furntiture and the clothes on your back. That doesn't make you an agent of the person who bought your house, does it?

I pointed out a major factual error in your Fuld cartoon: he is no way a representative of Barclays. You can LOL all you want, but your cartoon is way off and misleading to people. But then I happen to care about things like truth, maybe you don't.

Looks like you don't care about the possibility that they were deliberately set up either, but that's beside the point.

40. Using the Barclay's logo - because Fuld doesn't work for them
You have Fuld and the stormtroopers wearing the logo of Barclay's Bank in the original cartoon.

(Barclay's latest logo)

But although Barclays bought up most of Lehman Brothers' assets they did not buy Lehman Brothers, the company. So, Dick Fuld does not work for Barclays in any way, shape, or form.

I'm not objecting your making a cartoon of him, I'm not objecting to you painting him as a bad guy, or any of that stuff. I'm just pointing out that he's not a representative of Barclay's bank as suggested in your cartoon. It's like you put a BP logo on the jacket of someone who actually worked for Exxon but has never worked for BP.

43. Wow! You have taken this way too far seriously!
:D

I find it fascinating, however, that you made such a big deal about the logo... and that you even recognize it as a Barclays logo.

"It's like you put a BP logo on the jacket of someone who actually worked for Exxon but has never worked for BP." - Btw, this analogy does not work.

Oh, and just so you know, Lt. Fuld now works for Darth Diamond on the Death Star.

44. I recognize it as Barclays logo because I used to live in the UK
And believe it or not, they have some branches here in the US too. All I did was point out your error, and you started insulting me for no apparent reason. What's fascinating about the fact that I recognize it? Is there something wrong with knowing which bank is which?

I offer the BP/Exxon analogy because you've taken the logo of one bank and stuck it on someone from a different bank...I don't know why you think this analogy 'doesn't work'. Maybe you see all corporations and banks as interchangeable or something.

The death star part doesn't bother me at all.

Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 08:11 PM by anigbrowl
You photoshop Dick Fuld into a death star uniform, fine, that's political commentary. You put a Barclay's logo on top, it implies he's working for Barclays. What else could it possibly imply - that he works for CitiBank? Get real.

For reference, here's what I said about it at the outset (emphasis added): "Fuld isn't employed by Barclays. In case of confusion, that's a Barclay's Bank logo you have on him and all the stormtroopers, but it's entirely inappropriate since he's not on their payroll."

54. "it implies he's working for Barclays." - You are moving the goal posts.
"Implications" are not "facts," and in this case, the so-called implication is only your opinion.

Before you are so quick to judge, the next time, maybe you should first look up heraldry and symbols (especially the spread eagle).

56. No, I've been making the same point all along
I know plenty about heraldry - after all I grew up a few miles from medieval castle. But you're not just using any spread eagle there, rather a symbol associated with a specific bank.

I'm coming to the conclusion, given your "he is now working for Darth Diamond" comment, that you misunderstood what Fuld's situation was. Because if by 'Darth Diamond' you meant Robert Diamond, who is head of Barclays' US operations, Fuld is not working for him at all. Either he winds up Lehman Brothers completely, or if he somehow manages to resurrect it as a much smaller company, then he'll be the head of that. Barclays have taken over Lehmans' flagship building, but Fuld is already out of there - he's now working in rented space in the Time-Life building.

He still "has" the close to HALF A BILLION BUCKS, he skimmed from that company, and the people who trusted him to run it..

So he's perfectly willing to be vilified and even punched by a guy at the gym, because in the end, he has HIS!!

and you can bet your last dollar that it's sitting comfortably in an offshore account in the Caymans or into chi-chi real estate that will always "retain" its value...and with THAT much money, he has the luxury of being able to "ride out" any financial storm coming..

The ONLY thing that works with this type of guy, is to STRIP AWAY their wealth, toss them into jail for a long time..REAL JAIL..not country club jail..and to publicly humiliate them..

His kids will still go to college, his wife will still keep her "beauty" appointments, they will still eat that the best places and drive the finest cars to and from their various estates..

For him , nothing has changed, except that a bunch of new people hate him..and he can live with that..he has a fine, comfy cushion...made of cash..

69. You think Medea hasn't seen the inside of plenty of cells?
She's taken her knocks as well. I don't think they've broken any of her teeth or bones, but I'm not actually sure about that. The police have been none too gentle with her.

37. Is Fuld the one..
who was testifying on the clip that was on the News Hour tonite (Mon.)?

I was in the kitchen. Sometimes I just can't abide the sight of these f*ckers.

I heard him say, "I accept full responsibility..". How come there are never any sanctions for the "responsibility" they claim. These monsters knew what they were doing, and yet they skate, with no punishment for their heinous acts. Ever.

Empty words! "Responsibility"! They are mocking us!

Rot in Hell, Fuld!!

...gets drunk, and vocally slurs out that that he doesn't understand how the girls he molested when they were children are still pissed off at him and haven't gotten over it yet.

Sad fucking excuse for human trash.

He and all these loan companies that threatened the livelihood of ordinary Americans deserve more than to be heckled. They must be brought to justice.

from sprouting horns by the last photo is Botox.

PS I think Lehman Bros got screwed by JP Morgan on Friday before last - frozen funds.

75. These people need to be scorn everywhere they go
My feelings are that these people need to be scorned everywhere they go. Everywhere they go, people should let them not exactly how we feel about them. Nothing violent, nothing too hostile, they should just be let be known what we feel about them.

84. People love a good distraction
I know I'm going against the current here, but anyone who thinks that this one CEO can be blamed for anything is naive. The only thing I see him guilty of is getting bizzaro amounts of money for his job.

Now.. I would hope that the people who curse at Fuld saw and at least partially understood the hearing itself.

A CEO has to maximize the interests of the shareholders within the scope of the law. That's his job, that's why the shareholders employ him. Now, since there was practically no law, the game was by default played in murky waters. Risks were taken, some paid off, and the better it all went, the closer it all was to the breaking point. Lehman Brothers posted record business numbers last year, which means that he was, in the business sense, doing a good job. Then the market turned, and their damage control was too late, their best efforts to restructure and adapt were too late.

Sure, call him ugly. Call him reckless too. But it's NOT his responsibility to look out for the market or the broader society. That's what the laws are there for. The government, instead of looking out for its employers (the people), willingly put the people at risk.

Fuld was a good manager for a long time and he made some mistakes in playing overly risky hands. He, however, should NOT be shamed, the shame falls on the people who introduced deregulation, the people who define his legally-permissible playing field.

Please don't fall for the demonization of a handful of faces, it only happens to obscure the real issues.
