Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 08:30 PM by KoKo01
Just checking "DU Pulse" after Iowa and after Media Spin Weekend and those of us who are SERIOUS watching C-Span's "Road to WH" and the DEBATES.

4. Hi, KoKo. It's looking as if New Hampshire is going to be a wild one.
I bet journalists are hunkered down in hotels and motels up there right now, furiously assembling notes and making calls.

It would be really fun to be up there these next couple of days.

6. Yeah...checked out the debates and it's all getting overwhelming...
Should be interesting....There's been some good stuff to watch, too. Michelle Obama on C-Span, Edwards in Debate, Hillary's Town Hall Forum where she actually took questions...and answered them in full.

It's wild. Then all the spin out there from McMedia and here on DU....Exhausting and there's still so much more to get through... Although the McMedia says it's over in NH...lol's

9. He's a good man. He's a damned good man, in fact.
How are you, good person?

I hope 2008 is a year to your liking, filled with plenty of inspiring stuff and good company and sensational travel.

11. I'm holding up ok.
I had to fend off some personal attacks from a few fellow Kucinich supporters for the pic I made (below) very early this morning, but most understood it is satire. I have thick skin and took my lumps.

Quoting myself from another thread: Not only do I believe Elizabeth and Dennis would like my caricature of them, I am sure they would understand I am primarily poking fun at those who have criticized their relationship (and his height). I suppose a lot of folks do not realize that my pix are often directed at the supporters as well as antagonizers of the subjects in them, as well as myself and my own (mis)understanding of the noise going on around me.

Btw, I think John Edwards, too, is a fine man, and I look forward to supporting him 100%, at some point. ;)

My band had a great rehearsal in Audubon Park today on the banks of the Mississippi River. We're preparing for two Mardi Gras parades we're in, and a Mardi Gras ball. It's gonna be a lot of fun! :bounce:

How about you? Any interesting books you've read? Movies? Travel plans?

12. I can see where that might have drawn some fire, Swamp Rat.
Mardi Gras. It's coming up, isn't it. And your band is rehearsing, getting psyched, getting all the sound explored and considered before the big day.

Here's hoping your band triumphs and that the day is a very good one for the city. I have seen some footage of Mardi Gras over the years from camera-ready friends who've visited New Orleans for that day, and some of that footage is not for the meek of spirit.

Which strikes me as indication that you all are doin' it right.

14. Well, I guess I'm hanging in there. I did slip in to see INTO THE WILD
over the weekend -- it's excellent. Haven't really loved Sean Penn's stuff to date, but he shut me up in a hurry with this one.

Also rented and watched a German film, NO ONE SLEEPS, which I'd missed and always wanted to see. Intense, and occasionally raw account of the fear of deliberate contagion.

I did do a web hunt for the images of Juan Gris and can understand your enthusiasm. I'm re-reading Schama's POWER OF ART as we discussed, and it is blowing me away the second time, too.

'Am eager to learn any news of a new film about Hadrian, based on Margeritte Yorcenar's novel, THE MEMOIRS OF HADRIAN. Not many Roman emperors were Spanish-born, but Hadrian was. Last rumor was that Banderas will play the title role.

15. I guess I'll have to go see that movie.
I can relate to Christopher McCandless in many ways, especially his disdain for the edacious materialism of American society.

One of these days I will have to bite the bullet and buy "Power of Art." Unfortunately, I have to read science and math texts for the next few months... well, not "unfortunately." I like my new discipline a lot, though maybe I will change my tune when those heavy assignments on multivariate stats comes rolling in. :D

I'd love to see a film on Hadrian with Antonio Banderas playing the star role, especially if Pedro Almodóvar directs. He's a fine actor who's been typecast in some mediocre and bad films.

Last week I saw a hilarious, cheesy movie that is already a cukt classic a year after it came out: "Idiocracy." It is a low-budget film (30 million) by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead) that was suppressed by Fox upon release when they realized the film highly criticized FOX News. It is a funny film about America in 500 years, a dystopian society where everyone has an IQ 50 or less. It's not a mind-bending film, but more of a funny grade B movie with an important message: We will devolve as a society and a species if we keep eating junk food, playing video games, and reward only those with low intelligence who can reproduce.

17. I think artists of any kind -- painters, musicians, sculptors, dancers -- are
scientists and scients of all kinds are artists.

I realize there is a range of differences in project types, but not in the idea of long-term trajectory, planning, preparedness, happenstance, and inspiration -- plus those two arenas are the only things that survive.

So my prediction is you'll do beautifully in your new undertaking. And the one after that, as well.

IDIOCRACY sounds very good. Is this a film I can find at a bohemian rental place, or is it out of reach? Sometimes I think we ARE living in an America with everyone under a 50-IQ range. Witness the George W. Bush administration.

I think I will feel a physically palpable relief when Bush is finally on his way out of Washington. He has embarrassed us all and it's time he was packed up and shipped out.

21. It is very likely you will find it in a non-corporate movie rental place,
Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 01:01 AM by Swamp Rat
as it was banned by FOX for attacking corporate America. That is the whole point of the movie. :D

For the time being, you can read about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/

Or, do what I did and watch it on YouTube - you will see all 8 links to the film, broken up into 9 minute segments - I loaded one and then a second while watching the first, pausing the second one just as it began to load, then did the same for the rest of the clips:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqa4LpdtOD8&feature=PlayList&p=8525E31A38AC8BD9&index=0

I plan to buy this movie, whenever I come across it in a bohemian DVD retailer in the French Quarter. ;)

22. Good then -- I'll try to hunt it down and rent it and watch it. Anything that
goes up against FOX News is already A-OK with me.

The Buchanan image... it brings to mind Molly Ivins' terrific comment on his address before the Republican convention -- the one where he just unleashed all those rightwing hate slogans and hyper-conservative propaganda.

Ivins wrote, asking her progressive readers not to be too hard on ol' Pat, and that she was sure the speech sounded a lot better "in the original German."

23. LOL! I love Molly Ivans and miss her so.
I was fortunate to meet her when she gave a speech at Tulane University a few years ago.

My 85-year-old step-dad asked her the one question that stumped her (I have a photo of her blank expression as she stood in front of me): "Do you think the Democrats will have the guts to prosecute George W. Bush?"

Molly finally met her match! :D

27. Being a member of the Middle Class....EDWARDS!.....
...oh just go read Thom Hartmann's: "SCREWED The Undeclared war against the Middle Class" Edwards I think is addressing this particular issue better I feel than anyone else. Watching him at this last debate only confirms this for me. Obama also addressed it but not as well imo.

28. How About An Uncomitted Choice
I'm sure there are those who still haven't made a choice or those who did but now have to choose again and haven't.

It'd also be a good barometer of how much of a factor this could be in primaries ahead.

will vote for him in my primary. Watching and listening to the others. Knee-jerk reaction was to jump on the Obama bandwagon, but I am still evaluating candidates.

32. Kucinich--but that wasn't what you were really asking.
You're asking whether or not we are cutting mental deals, and picking another top candidate simply because so many others have.

So, yeah, there's still no one to touch Dennis, but if he's still in single digits when my own primary comes around, I'm likely to vote for Edwards.
