I have a sister who's 20-years older than I am and the 60s were wasted on her. :(

however I have seen many of the bands who played Woodstock

Even roadied for Country Joe at a peace event in the 80s :headbang:
not bad for a metallica fan :headbang:

I have the Woodstaock Video , and the music collection ..

I was even x( too young for the US festival x( which would have
been a great campout festival to go to ...

If you want woodstock feel go to The Stawberry Music festival :D
it's not political usually. it's all about the music and the musicians.

It's right on :)

8. another major shift in cultural history
So many musicians from that moment are part of an understanding of the 20th century. wish I could've been there...I was born too late for all the good stuff. I suppose we should have all known that the American empire was on the way to decline when John Travolta in polyester pants and the beegees in falsetto were supposed to be the next big thing.

Luckily for me I had a brother 11 years older who had an excellent vinyl collection.

11. Sidenote: When I was in my 30s and a grad student at Cal,
my kid and Country Joe's kid were best friends. They both were writers as in grafitti and were a well known team in the area. I spent hours trying to get them to only post in legal places and they spent hours shaking me off and eating cookies in my livingroom.

Country Joe's kid was the sweetest guy. I'm sure he kept my kid out of trouble on more than one occasion. And that's as close as I ever got to Woodstock.

13. speaking of Country Joe, have you seen Monterey Pop, which started it all?
Edited on Wed Aug-15-07 10:31 PM by Gabi Hayes
I just bought the 'complete' concert....3 DVDs, including a great performance of Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine

their very good guitar player is

http://www.spiritus-temporis.com/barry-melton/

the DVDs include the complete Hendrix set, along with Otis Redding's.

I'd never seen/heard Hendrix's version of 'Like a Rolling Stone,' which is among the most amazing performances I've ever seen. he'd taken two hits of acid before he started playing, btw, and was clearly ecstatic, STS, during his
groundbreaking set, which was the first time he'd played for a large audience in America

I love this

17. gotta give the Monkees credit, though, yes?
and can you IMAGINE being one of those teenies waiting for the boys, and getting HENDRIX as the opening act?

Peter Tork introduced a group in Monterey. I think it was Buffalo Springfield, but I can't remember

Brian Jones was there, too, and also introduced somebody. there were plenty of shots of him throughout the video

did you know about the movie that came out recently regarding his murder?

26. according to Clive Davis, she made sleeping with her the condition of
signing with his label

I saw him say that on a 40th anniversary update of MP, along with some poignant scenes of Michelle Phillips reminiscing (John was the motive force behind the show, along with Lou Adler, who 'highjacked' it, according to many san fran musicians. this is in the booklet that came with the DVD)

I dunno if the 'new' version of this is a remastered version of the original, but some of the sets, especially Hendrix's have studio-quality sound.

his performance, along with Ravi Shankar's, put everyone else's (Janis included, IMO) far back in the shade.

I've really never seen anything like what Hendrix did that night, and it took seeing it in this vid to make it clear. he epitomized everything about what rock and roll embodies/embodied, and I'd love to see similar examples. I've seen my share, but this one captured the Ecstasy of being completely in one's element, unity of music/instrument/self/crowd, etc. sounds corny, I know, but you'd have to see it (perhaps in a suitably altered SOM, as well), to appreciate it.

I'd seen bits and pieces of this before, but to see it all of a piece, and to really concentrate on what he was doing is hard to describe. You have to see the entire set to know what I mean.

very powerful

then, of course, there's Electric Ladyland, about which an exceptional DVD was made, as well.

when they sent the acetate to the record maker to master, they sent it back with the label: "Electric Landlady"!!!!!

32. remastered and new
I heard that a lot of muscians have remastered cds so that they gain rights/royalties to the songs again. wonder if it's the same thing with a dvd and the producers?

I have to ask you... are those figures in your sig from Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights? (except not delightful... isn't it the hell part?) how were they made?

35. dunno about the rights thing, but I hope everybody who played gets
a cut, if there's a new cut to be had

AFA the figurines, they're fired, I guess. I found a bunch of websites, with many of the embodied characters from that painting

one of my favorite books, btw, is "Leap," by Terry Tempest Williams, the subject of which is, mostly, that painting, with digressions. she spent a total of several YEARS at the Prado, studying the painting, and the result is sort of like....watching Hendrix play when he's at his best.

18. Woodstock by Joni Mitchell (lyrics)
Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, 'Tell where are you going?'
This he told me
Said, 'I¹m going down to Yasgur's Farm,
Gonna join in a rock and roll band.
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free.'

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

'Well, then can I walk beside you?
I have come to lose the smog,
And I feel like I'm a cog in something turning.
And maybe it's the time of year,
Yes and maybe it's the time of man.
And I don't know who I am,
But life is for learning.'

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon.
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.
We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon.

And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.
By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are caught in the devil¹s bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

44. I guess that depends on how you define breakfast.
Now, don't get your knickers all twist. The last time I said "It depends on how you define..." I really got a quite personal flame thing going on. No offense intended. Now, I was old enough to attend, but it was not a part of my world then...or now. Waaay too much mud...no showers...and where does one plug in the hair dryer. What do you mean...no showers? Errrghh... Huge problem.

Friends of mine, old hippies, know better than to suggest something like that...bad camping experiences. Eww...they don't like the big mama cat coming out of the VW van in the heat, humidity, and no available shower. Not good.
