5. That's not really a great argument
unless you're trying to say that Thomas was a good pick and I doubt that's what you mean.

9. I think he's trying to say that the RW are hypocrites if they really
believe that Sotomayor was picked solely because she's Hispanic and a woman.

10. Sold Out
Obama had a chance to begin balancing the court after a generation of center/right to far right appointments. He picked a center/right candidate. There's a lesson for liberals in this: They are not even allowed through the back door of the Republican Party, and they are just quickie election one nighters to be seduced every election cycle by the Democrats. In essence, a block of voters large enough to determine the outcome of national elections just gets fucked and keeps coming back for more. I think this is called co-dependency or something. The donkey might be well hung, but this is ridiculous.

11. Kudos to the interviewer...
... she called him on his BS. I especially liked her last comment about "temperament" being a code word (for "bitch") being used against women in (or aspiring to) positions of power.

13. C'mon....the RW just wants things to be fair!
Edited on Wed May-27-09 06:47 PM by AlbertCat
I mean....they always are saying race and gender should not be considered when choosing this or that position.......

but such and such's race and gender are very important!

It's "We don't want race to be an issue, but look at her race!!!!!" Wait a moment!

Typical RW nonsense. They have nothing. Why are they even wasting expensive air time on this, interviewing such an idiot?

And Turley did not raise a single concern about her "smarts". That reference is a lie.

Committee for Justice

The Committee for Justice was featured by Washington Post writer David Von Drehle on July 23, 2002, in the article "New GOP Group to Push For Judicial Nominees."

"A number of prominent Republicans, led by former White House counsel C. Boyden Gray, have formed a committee to pressure the Senate to approve President George Walker Bush's nominees for federal judgeships.

15. ya know, she actually was picked because of her race and gender
Let's be honest here. She was picked because she is a latina.

That doesn't mean she is unqualified. From this layman's perspective she is supremely qualified. But it's not like they threw all the most qualified candidates into a selection pool and the most qualified just happened to be a woman of Puerto Rican heritage.

Let's not be disingenuous like the republicans. She was nominated because she is a very qualified latina woman - and there's nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I like criticizing the republicans for their unqualified token minority nominees and I intend to continue to so the next time they are in office. I will say "they only chose that unqualified candidate because he's black/female/whatever." It just so happens that when the democrats make a minority appointment they have a much larger pool to choose from and can come up with someone who is also qualified for the job.

16. Nope.
She was picked because President Obama believed her to be the right person at the right time...to fill the vacancy on the court. Sure, her ethnicity and gender are immutable qualities that reflect who she is, but so does her academic and professional experiences, her personal background, her judicial philosophy and temperament, and so on. Please feel free to file her away as a "supremely qualified latina" if you like. Not me.

19. You bet. And, it was about damn time a Latina sat on that bench.
She's going to be great. I'd love to see Scalia's face the first time he tries to run her over. lol

18. Being hispanic has nothing to do with race but has everything to do with ethnicity...
We are all of the same race, the human race. One's dermal melanin level should not be a factor. "Hispanic" has more to do with language and/or country of origin more than anything else. I know black hispanics, white hispanics, chinese hispanics and even hispanics with German heritage. Who do they think brought the beer industry to Mexico.

I also herad the Turly interview and I believe he his being taken out of context. If he wasn't I need to pay more attention to what he says.
