Sorry for the long note. Thanks for reading it!Hi DU. I have NEVER solicited here for thread views (other than my band’s internet broadcasts), but I am biting the bullet on this one and putting it out there, so please bare with me:
In February 2005, I got the idea for doing a concept album utilizing a tried and true theme: The plot is set in a not-too-distant futuristic dystopian society in which the Christian Right Wing takes over the U.S. As they hastily try to bring about the Rapture, God actually comes back...and isn't quite what they expected. I am about ¾ finished with the record which I am producing and releasing by myself (with the help of some fine musicians) out of my home studio.
Cut to a week ago when I was perusing the Rolling Stone: Curse that big name rock star!
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame is releasing a concept album on 4/17/07…about the Christian Right Wing and their rise to power in the U.S. He has a title, “Year 0.” He has a side plot about mind control chemicals in the water supply and a giant hand called "the presence" that comes out of the sky. Here is the link to a site devoted to the record:

Please let me emphasize a couple of things:
1.I respect and admire NIN, and I am in no way implying that Trent Reznor ripped off my idea. I doubt he knows who I am.
2.Dystopia is a common literary theme, and I realize that Christo-fascism has been a tried and true story line in contemporary art for decades, “It can’t Happen Here”, “A Handmaid’s tale”, and “V for Vendetta” are but a few examples. Neither of us holds the copyright to this idea.
3.I imagine Mr. Reznor got the idea for making his record the same way I did: simply by allowing current events to inspire him. Actually, we should both thank neo-conservatism.
4.Our plots are similar, but, judging from the brief article, he uses more of a sci-fi element in than I do.
5.I am a small time musician trying to get my art out there without the benefit of the record label juggernaut. A hard thing to do to be sure, as any musician (including Mr. Reznor) can attest.
6.I can only imagine that his music will be completely different from mine.
7.His plot points sound really interesting. If you’re a fan, this looks like a winner!
Another link to a blurb about his record:
http://music.netscape.com/story/2007/04/03/nine-inch-nails-launch-mysterious-web-campaignSo why am I posting this? Simple: Obviously my little project will be ECLIPSED by anything Trent Reznor releases, and it would hurt if all my friends said “Hey! That was a great idea…when Trent did it”. I have an ego like any other artist, and I like getting credit for my original work, so I’d like the chance to get my project out there the only way I can....and I releasee it now just to say "Hey, I had a good idea too, and here's the proof."
PLEASE take a listen (and a look as well because I produced a brief slide show) and, if you like it, please tell others and consider giving this little song some “K AND R”love. I would be so proud if DU Liked my work enough to bestow that daily "Greatest" honor. The entire record will be released soon and I will keep anyone who shows interest abreast of the developments.
Oh, and Trent: if you or an associate is reading this…I didn’t rip your idea off! Hope your record blows up. I am sure it will.
On a side note, this is really an eclectic project and each song is different. This one is inspired by two of my fave artists: Peter Gabriel and Tom Waits. It helps if you like a wide variety of music styles.
Trent doesn’t need the publicity, but you’re fellow DU member sure could use some. Please help the little guy. It’s one of the things for which DU is famous.
THANKS FOR SPREADING THE WORD and Thanks for supporting original music!
:hi:
PS: If it isn’t your cup o’ tea and you want to rip it, that’s OK, but please be constructive.
