Bill Clinton in a speech on 4/10/08 made a comment seen in the video about stealing cars.

5. Black folks gonna eat this one up! To think we thought the Jesse Jackson Carolina comment was bad.
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 09:20 AM by raystorm7
I would have liked to see the entire clip after he said the word "Cars", just so we don't start running to conclusions like the Republicans do and look at the whole speech in context.

2. Oh, I'm sure once their pots-and-pans protest is done, they'll be in here to defend this
And they'll accuse US of starting an anti-Hillary thread by posting this video.

3. Corporations are allowed to form PAC's to get around the 1907 campaign finance law
There is a very easy way around the law. Obama does not take money from such PAC's.

11. Thank-you for addressing the issue
Yours is a much better answer than saying that Hillary's husband is a racist, on the basis of taking small snippets of his comments completely out of context.

4. two steps from oil to candidates
First they create a PAC, then they can legally move the money taken in to those loyal to their interests. It's easy when the audience he is in front of can't challenge what he says. www.opensecrets.org makes it easy to find.

10. IN CONTEXT this has NOTHING to do with race.
It is very clear from the clip that Bill Clinton is making the point that it is kind of sneaky for a candidate to claim that he does not take any money from oil companies, almost implying that maybe one of the other candidates (i.e. Hillary Clinton) does accept money from oil companies - when it would be illegal to do so.

So Bill's point is clear: "What's the deal with running ads that say I don't do X -- when X is illegal anyway?"

18. Then he could have used a better example
Instead of saying "At least I don't steal cars" - which any reasonable person could construe as having a racial element to it - how about something like "At least I don't eat babies" or "At least I'm not a serial killer"?

13. Taken in conjunction with the Jesse Jackson comment, this is starting to look like a pattern.
He might not have intended it to be racist, but in light of all the other race-baiting Hillary's campaign has openly engaged in (and the fact that they've been called on it), you'd THINK he'd choose his words more carefully.

This latest slip-up definitely smacks of this: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1147

15. 'Pump Head' ?
A study from Duke University, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February, 2001, confirms what many doctors have suspected, but have been reluctant to discuss with their patients: A substantial proportion of patients after coronary artery bypass surgery experience measurable impairment in their mental capabilities. In the surgeons’ locker room, this phenomenon (not publicized for obvious reasons) has been referred to as "pump head." http://heartdisease.about.com/cs/bypasssurgery/a/pumphead.htm
