Advanced You scored 85% Beginner, 85% Intermediate, 80% Advanced, and 60% Expert! You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score. 5. Great test; I'm not just saying that because |
|
I got the same results you did, either. :)
I certainly do wish this was taken by the DUers who keep using loose for lose and phase for faze, among other odd usages.
In an ideal world, the test would be mandated for those ding-dongs over at FR.

Do you mean this: "You've answered 40 of 40, by the way"? It's only a counter. That's only to show how many question you still have to answer. The numbers later with the % tell you how many you got right.

I did misinterpret that and somehow missed the percentages at the top. I just saw the "genius" thing and got all light headed. :-)
I was referring to the "better than" percentages at the bottom.
It said better than 99% on Intermediate and Expert and 0% on Beginner and Advanced, which I thought looked weird.

Well, you don't have to give them any personal info but you have to fill in a gender and a birth date to get to the site of the result. What you saw above was merely a counter which is the same for everybody and not the information how many questions you got right.

I only got 66% of the expert.
I object that "hung" is becoming vernacular instead of the way I was taught as "hanged". Same with "snuck" and I corrected my tenth grade English teacher on that back in 1978, and his reply was "sneaked? sneaked?"
Plus, does anybody use "whom" now? I posted a rule for this on DU - after 1975 it is "who" in all cases. I think Pete Townshend had something to do with that.

So, the author isn't actually correct in her answer. She just copped out because it is complicated.
I think that bumps my score up into the "English Genius" level.

Advanced You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 66% Expert! You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.
Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!
Wow, and I have terrible spelling.

Advanced You scored 92% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 73% Expert!
======
Missed one in Beginner: Just a silly mistake. I know the difference between hardy and hearty, but I just checked the wrong one. I wasn't warmed up yet!
I got 'em all correct in Intermediate.
In Advanced and Expert, it's a mixed bag. Two that I missed are chronic problems for me...compliment/complement and affect/effect tend to trip me up all the time, so I always double-check them when I write.
Personally, I question the "awhile" answer, but hey.
As for Naval, the final one I missed, I'm filing a formal protest! Perhaps it is more of a style question. The right answer may be technically correct if you stretch the definition the author provides, but the word just isn't used that way in the context of the question.
Oh well. Cool quiz! I doubt you'd get any freeps (or especially CUers) to take it, though. It's too much like school. They hates that book learnin' stuff. It's for pointy-headed liberal elites.

63. Question (spoiler for one question) |
|
since the blog with the answer key is currently unavailable:
What do people think of the "driving fast is risky/risque" question? Grammatically, both are correct, but the second is a bit of a weird thing to say (not illogical, just ... weird). So should the answer be just 'risky'? Or 'both'? I got 100/100/100/93, so I know I got at least one answer wrong.

Not to get to "navel" here... but risky as opposed to risque is a tad different. I've been both... to jump off a cliff is RISKY, but to wear that red dress with the slit up the middle is RISQUE!!
But we were warned in the beginning that it could be deferential now weren't we?? No matter, please take no offense! Loved playing the game myself!

I must confess that when people post messages that indicate a level of illiteracy, I tend to doubt their intelligence. I realize that the two are truly unrelated, but one aspect of the reading process when encountering these mistakes includes a questioning of their level of knowledge. It's a shame, since it is often a false impression, but we only see the words as typed. That said, I am completely capable of putting together a message with words omitted and the meaning obscured, and spelling is irrelevant.

Televangelist
You are 14% Rational, 57% Extroverted, 0% Brutal, and 71% Arrogant. As the Lord as my witness, I swear upon the good book that you are indeed the TELEVANGELIST! Characterized by extreme arrogance, self-assurance, and extroversion, you would make a very charismatic leader (though not a very good one). On top of that, you are also more intuitive than rational, predisposing you to a more spiritual or emotional outlook on life. Thus, you are thoroughly irrational, and you tend to think that sound logical reasoning is overrated, and that it is much better to trust your gut instincts--which must be pretty big instincts, considering the size of your gut. You also tend to be rather gentle and considerate of others' feelings. Clearly, you would make the perfect televangelist. You could easily fleece people of their money and their dignity like so many sheep. Emotional, extroverted, arrogant, and gentle, you annoy the hell out of people who have to listen to the feel-good, intuitive shit spewing from your mouth. Not only that, but people may look down on you as a self-centered asshat. So while you are gentle and genuinely care about others, it is quite clear that you still care about yourself MORE. Why is your personality flawed? Because you are too damned extroverted, emotional, and arrogant. So preach your irrational message, brotha-man! I assure you, no one will be listening. Except for a few bums. But they just want you to feed them crackers and wine.
To put it less negatively:
1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational. 2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted. 3. You are more GENTLE than brutal. 4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.
Compatibility: Your exact opposite is the Spiteful Loner.
Why do I find this eerie? I'm a minister! :)

Seriously...WTF? Are you joking? There is a reason for Strunk's "Element's of Style" and dictionaries, you know. While there is a difference between making a typographical error and actually spelling a word wrong (as I did in "some"), I think it's sort of funny I made a typo on this particular thread.
That said, I'm not on a "high horse." I really think it's pitiful if an average high-school educated American can't score 100% on this test.

I should have done better. You scored 92% Beginner, 92% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 73% Expert! You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

I'll come back after doing the test and see if I was right.

After dissing the other posters and pre-emptively (falsely) accusing us of posting inflated scores, I see you don't choose to post yours.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm...
Besides, I don't recall anyone saying it was anything but trivial. Although, if one goes to the author's blog, there are definitions and brief grammar lesson which some people might actually find helpful. But no, it's not the SATs.
So...What was YOUR score. Honestly.

|
... asking me? That don't make no sense....
That's y I screenshotted the score page - The only interest of the test is when the score-as-given is conjoined with the time taken on the test. I took about 4 minutes to take the test, for example, and got 92/100/100/93.
I guess I should've read the *entire* question - lol!

120. That's one I got wrong, but not THAT wrong. |
|
I just have never heard of the term "NAVAL travel." Who the hell says "naval travel," especially in the context the question was presented. Even the definition the author presented was suspect...my dictionary does not indicate that the word pertains to any ship, as she claims, rather it is an adjective, "of, in or relating to a navy or navies." So I got a point off not because I'm a stoopid American, as SOME posters here contend us less-than-100%-ers are, but because I questioned the veracity of the author's use of the word/definition. And I still think I'm correct on that one, as well as with her explanation of "awhile," which is also not supported by the dictionary.

123. I Thought The Phrase Was Kind Of Atypical As Well, But It Was Obvious It Would |
|
be naval and not navel LOL.
But I agree with ya, I've never heard it used in such a way either. But they always tell you when taking tests like that to take emotions out of it and pick what you consider to be the most logically correct answer. In that case, it wouldn't have been MOST logical to deduce that the author was looking for none of the above, because the use of the word 'naval' wasn't technically breaking any rules and it didn't appear that it would've been an appropriate use of a trick question. It just seemed contextually silly. But in deducting the logic of the question per the author's intent, it seemed most logical that they intended the phrase to be a real sentence and that you needed to pick the right version of the word. In that case, it's naval.
I know you really didn't need all that, but I was just walking through quickly what my train of thought was for that question. I learned a long time ago to never look too deeply into multiple choice questions for it to be a trick question. Once you do, or find yourself arguing with the theoretics, you'll find yourself getting more wrong. Generally a trick question will always present itself with an 'AHA!' moment, after realizing the right answer. If there is no choice that upon applying sound logic would give you an "AHA!, I see the right answer, you tricky little thing you" type answer, then it is probably logical to assume it isn't a trick question at all. Just pick the best choice, even if there appears to be no technically perfect one.
But anyway, I hear ya. That was a pretty weird question.

I get really tired of seeing "he poured over the documents". Ack.
At least they included "faze" vs. "phase".
My pet peeve with my daughters lately is that they always say "I did it on accident" instead of "by accident". They insist that they're right because "all our friends say it that way". :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: As if Okies are known for their stellar use of the English language. I'm so, so, SOOOO sick of nearly everyone here in OK saying "she don't" instead of "she doesn't"

I remember nearly everything i ever hear. Not sure why and not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It just is. But as to spatial/kinesthetic, i'm a big believer in "muscle memory". So, once you have it, you have it! (Riding a bike?)
I would probably be more "learn by doing" type if i were more ambitious. But, if i actually have to DO something, i'd just as soon not learn it. The Professor

206. Well, while it's not always true of us 'analytical types' ... |
|
... I've found that the good ones have a mode of thinking/learning that's n-dimensional - a spatial (and dynamic) mental model. I can't' "get my head around" something until I get all the balls in the air and compose that virtual 'reality' - ticking off the dynamics. Weinberg wrote about "Systems Thinking" - and came close to what I perceive.

The creepy underpants stains of the right-wing have gotten hold of the quiz. One of the particularly stupid morans tried to claim he scored so poorly because he used the British spelling of COLOUR. Except...there are no questions that have the words color/colour as one of the answers. They can't even LIE very well!

It's about whether you know the difference between to, two, and too, among others.
Geez, they don't even know the meaning of the word homonym.

Probably few would get a question like this correct:
"Did she ask if John just called? Tell her it was ____."
Answer: him or he?
The correct answer is "he", but it sounds so stilted that few people (if any) would word it that way in everyday conversation.

236. I actually looked at the key and here's what I found. |
|
This explains the odd test results.
It's not my fault! Regarding your results page
This is how it works: I wrote the questions, and I assigned points to each correct question. The program (or whatever it is called) on OKCupid calculates your score based on your answers and the points that I assigned to each answer. Sometimes its calculations are wrong, giving you 0% when you answered all of them correctly in reality. I am very sorry about this; however, there is nothing I can do about it! That is one of the main reasons I created this blog - so you can check your answers. Please don't get mad at me and post the fact that OKCupid scored your test wrong. Additional Information on Pointing: Some questions receive 1 point while others receive 2. The points for each question are listed in the Answer Key. That is how you can receive a score of something other than a multiple of 10 in a 10-question section.

English Genius You scored 85% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 80% Advanced, and 86% Expert! You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!
I'll need to go back and see what I missed, I think it was a couple of those than/then ones.

"One of the most dangerous and distressing aspects of contemporary America is the emergence of an immense academic, professional and intellectual class that is entirely organized into the dominant system; and, conversely, the rapid disappearance of the independent, often dissenting but respectable academics, professionals and intellectuals who are the guardians of civilization."
No doubt Pynchon, James Joyce, e.e. cummings and Sly Stone would not have fared too well on that test.
He workin'. Simple progressive He is working .
He be workin'. Habitual/continuative aspect He works frequently or habitually. Better illustrated with "He be workin' Tuesdays all month."
He be steady workin'. Intensified continuative He is working steadily.
He been workin'. Perfect progressive He has been working.
He been had that job. Remote phase (see below) He has had that job for a long time and still has it.
He done worked. Emphasized perfective He has worked. Syntactically, "He worked" is valid, but "done" is used to emphasize the completed nature of the action.
He finna go to work. Immediate future He's about to go to work. Finna is a contraction of "fixing to"; though is also believed to show residual influence of late 16th century archaism "would fain (to)", that persisted until later in some rural dialects spoken in the Carolinas (near the Gullah region). Note: "fittin' to" is commonly thought to be another form of the original "fixin' (fixing) to".

Advanced You scored 92% Beginner, 92% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 66% Expert! You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.
