Green Day-U2 video: The Saints are Coming
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 01:39 AM by Bleachers7
This is an outstanding video. Green Day and U2 did a modern version of "The Saints are Coming Home" at the first NFL game at the Superdome. It was the official reopening. They have now made a video for the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seGhTWE98DU

The video basically shows what should have happened during Katrina. They sing "the saints are coming" as video of the military rescuing and feeding people is shown. The problem is that this never happened. It makes me proud that they call our soldiers saints. It also makes me terribly sad that these brave, brilliant people are being forced to fight for a lie across the planet when they are so needed right here.

1. Just saw it
didn't hear the Music but I'm sure it kicked ass - and the images were LOVELY, people being saved by an ARMY of well, ARMY/AIR FORCE troops in NO..

I liked the end, "NOT SEEN ON TV" like the red "AS SEEN ON TV" logo thang.

Nice move, to SHOW people what SHOULD have been done is much more powerful, as is music than to BITCH about it, it will get far more PLAY and go VIRAL..

Music is it's own language and we ALL understand it. EXCELLENT!

3. AWESOME!
Great music & the footage gave me chills. Seeing those poor people stranded in all that floodwater breaks my heart all over again. Now, was that footage of the Air Force real? It looked it.

7. U2 has always been on my political line
and this video confirms my opinion again.

Worst on that case has been the army, willing to shoot on every person trying to get food or water out of already destroyed supermarkets...

So you can tell what will happen if folks get really hungry...

any wonder, for what Halliburton detention camps were made for?

13. This is the way I thought it would be.
I am a native New Orleanian and this is the way I thought it would be. Silly me! Instead we had to organize grassroots communities to petition Congress for the RIGHT TO EXIST!!!!!!! (All the while trying to put our lives back together after the worst natural and un-natural disaster in the country's history.) I will NEVER forgive Hastert for his comment about buldozing the city. Thank you Green Day amd U2 and esp. The Edge for your help in keeping my hometown in the world's eye.

16. I have to be the contrarian and say that the video made me a little uneasy
If all the governments involved had done their jobs before the hurricane, there would have been no need for air drops as shown on the video. I am also uneasy at the notion that we have to rely on the military to save us. Maybe we do because we give all the equipment to the military. How about if we have an agency equipped to go in before and/or after a disaster that's set up to take care of evacuations, caring for survivors, putting a town back on its feet? Think of something that would be like a combination of the Coast Guard and the fire fighters the National Forest Service recruits every summer. Set it up properly, and it would be able to draw upon volunteers and send them to where they are needed.

17. You are absolutely right! But
there is no profit to gain in volunteering...

We can hang on on profit, or we can hang on on family, friendship and neighborhood!

If any man thinks: this is something the police / the fireman / the army can take care of, man will ever be adicted to police / fireman / army!

The contrarian of globalization is the family, the friends and the neighborhood.

Get together again is the key to be free again.

BTW: bruichladdich is scottish ;-)

19. We spent the week-end after the October Surprise storm in
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 05:20 PM by hedgehog
Buffalo cleaning up relatives' yards. We drove in from 120 mile away with a generator, battery operated sump pump, lanterns etc to take care of my mom and dad until the power came back. Meanwhile, how many thousand students were stuck on the UB campus with nothing to do but study and play video games? Imagine what could have happened if busses had pulled up to haul volunteers around to help clear some of the brush. Sure, I wouldn't have trusted any of them with a chain saw, but our crew had one skilled chain saw operator (my husband) and 5-6 six laborers (me and the kids) and we got the job done.

24. Most of the time, hedgehogs just go about their own business.
They tend to roll up into a ball and present nothing but needles if attacked. Nice image, though.

But if hundreds of hegdehogs will stick together, the path can not be followed ;-)

18. More symbolic than anything else...
The point I take away from the video is that even if there was a small contribution from the military, much of NOLA's suffering would not have happened.

There would not have had to have been massive air drops - if there were sufficient National Guard presence and equipment, things would have ended a lot differently after Katrina.

20. Maybe I'm thinking that Bush wants to phase out FEMA and turn
over all its responsibilities to the military. I'm all for having the military do disaster work, but under the direction of a civilian agency.

41. I disagree.
Yes, the levees should have been fixed earlier. New Orleans did exceed their evacuation goals. But the job of food drops, shelter, and the sort is initially given to the military bcause they have the manpower, tools, and experience. The fact is that our guys are stuck in Iraq for no reason when we are at risk right here at home.

37. My young teenager talked me into taking her to
a Green Day concert last year. I had only heard a couple songs off of American Idiot and really didn't know what to expect. The way Billie Joe, who has to be all of 5'7" and very slight, commanded the stage through the power of his voice and the magnetism of his personality was incredible. What a showman. Just great.

28. Great Song and Video very powerful
I think they were portraying what all of us watching at home thought was going to happen at any moment. I used to think I was special because I was an American, that my life meant something to my fellow Americans. After watching the devestation of Katrina I no longer feel that way.

It was released back in the late '70s by a Scottish band called The Skids. Written by Richard Jobson and Stuart Adamson. Great song and nice cover!

33. This is a very powerful and moving video
The scenes depicting what could have been, what with the armed forces helping out really made me, for a moment, feel proud to be an American.

If we didn't Airhead in the office it actually would have happened.

BTW anyone read the comments on YouTube? This one really pissed me off. Too bad I don't have an account to really cuss him out:
