Dennis Miller
I saw an ad for a new Dennis Miller stand-up special on HBO, and I was just curious as to the general feeling/opinion of him is here at DU.

I remember his last stand-up special, post 9/11, where he lauded * as (paraphrased) "someone who has brought integrity back to the office of the President...". He also had that show on CNBC where he tortured a chimpanzee for an hour.

What are the DU thoughts on him? Is it worth the time to watch, even for the entertainment value?

2. I won't be watching. He is a sell-out neo-con hack.
This man went from having Bill Hicks on his HBO show, to discussing what "Rush" said on the radio while he was driving to the CNBC studio.

Fuck Dennis Miller. He's the Ron Silver of stand-up comedy.

He says 9/11 scared him so much it changed him as he feared for his kids. So, he admits he is a coward and an idiot. A coward to be that afraid and an idiot to think Bush would be the one to protect him.

6. DM is just another fickle attention whore.
His 15 minutes were up years ago, and although I feel for him and his need to support his family somehow, he's never been that talented or funny. He must lay awake nights wondering how he can make a buck and whose ass he can kiss this time around:)

34. Smart guy, but just not that funny
especially when he goes way over the heads of his intended audience.

Making jokes along the lines of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky (sp?) to the beer-and-brats crowd of MNF . . .

I don't recall the year, but I realized how unfunny he was when I saw him in the Front Row Theatre in Cleveland. For those who live in Cleveland, they know how long ago that had to be. It's been closed for a long time.

Rita Rudner opened for him. Now, she was funny!

Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 11:50 PM by Jeff In Milwaukee
His HBO special ("Black & White") was pretty good. At the time, Miller was equally willing to skewer both liberals and conservatives, and I respected him for that. It was when he decided that he was, essentially, going to become a propagandist for the conservatives that I lost respect for him.

If he changes his stripes, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Until then, however, he's just a shill.

77. This was well before I really started paying attention to the media
attacks of Dems/Libs.

But he just thought his stuff was far funnier than it was. He was the only one laughing, at the end of many of his jokes/points.

This was while he still was on Weekend Update, or just shortly after he left . . . and he just was not funny.

75. Yeah the pseudo "highbrow" jokes on Monday Night Football struck a
rather discordant note, did they not?

1) The dude was just trying too hard, and NOT succeeding

2) He obviously was not a football fan, a guy who knew anything about football, and his comments reflected it. Quite possibly the WORST MNF announcer EVER.

39. I disagree
I always thought his 80's - early 90's stand-up was pretty funny.

It is a sad turn of events for him.

For awhile after 9/11 I just thought he was extremely traumatized by the whole situation, but I figured he would have come around by now.

What a shame.

Wondering what the tactic is there. Is he trying to get back in the liberal fold or does he think that we'll watch just to rip on him? Maybe that's how he's selling himself to HBO, ala Howard Stern in Private Parts "oh the people who hate Dennis will watch even longer" which is bullshit.

Either way, I won't be watching. He's not funny anymore and he's not interesting. He's just boring and pathetic.

"As for what many are calling racial profiling in the aftermath of September 11th, well, get ready to be pissed off, you ACLU-F***ing-Morons, we're dealing with a massive threat and limited manpower, so, you want them to check everybody out equally? Sure, fine okay, but let's at least compromise and put the Swedish dwarf a little further down the list than the Iraqi explosives expert carrying a Belgian passport with more eraser marks on it than Kid Rock's trig final."

Dennis Miller: I don't want to go on a rant, here, but America's foreign policy makes about as much sense as Beowulf having sex with Robert Fulton at the first battle of Antietam. I mean when a neo-conservative defenestrates it's like Raskolnikov filibuster deoxymonohydroxinate...

He's one of those individuals who rose to the public awareness without any logical reason why. He has no talent as a comedian, he knows very little about football (even though ABC/Disney gave him a job as a commentator), and his political views are off the wall.

That chimp he had on his show was there to lend a bit of erudite sophistication to the proceedings. Sort of a counterbalance to Miller.

maybe I just didn't think he was funny on MSNBC(?) because I can't laugh with someone I totally disagree with, or maybe it was a bad format for him, or maybe he's just lost his edge. 53. Miller commits the worst sin for a comic: He ain't funny!
Not only that, but he's overly impressed with his own intelligence (which is virtually non-existent, since he's fallen for the Bush-Cheney "All fear, all the time" tactic).

He believes his florid vocabulary proves how smart he is, when it's clear that most of the time he understands neither the words nor the tortured metaphors he employs.

In short, Dennis Miller is fuckwitted sellout hack. It's appropriate that he did the ads for NetZero because that's what he is : a net ZERO!

He had a great act. His year 2000 act he did for HBO was funny stuff. He clearly at one time had very good writers and people around him. Why he ever thought his pro-conservative psuedo-intelligent quips would work is beyond me. Clearly he lost the people that use to write for him. He'd still be better than Joe Theisman on Monday night.

Good comedy comes from someone outside the mainstream, a sort of misfit who gives views, opinions, commentary etc., as an ordinary Joe.

That Miller's lips have been superglued to the collective ass of the * administration hardly makes him an outsider.

I wish he would just go away. :grr:
