Senate defeats FMA

On a procedural vote, the United States Seanate has voted 48-49 on the cloture motion to continue debate on the Marriage Protection Amendment (formerly known as the Federal Marriage Amendment.)

The vote, largely along party lines, means that the effort to amdend the Constitution to restrict marriages to one man and one woman is effectively over for the 109th Congress.

DEVELOPING.....

4. tactical mistake by Republicans
What were they trying to get out of this? Sure, their fundies got the redmeat they were demanding but what now for the Republicans who voted against them? Any of them running in November?

18. Perhaps, but Dem's could have capitalized by....
having a few Dem Senators give an answering press conference right after The AWOL/moron did his re this Constitutional amendment.

Dem's should have said something lie.... "Glad to see Bush push this pandering amendment but wish he would address his failure to catch the guy who caused the 9/11 attack. Wish he would address the enormous budget deficit that has occurred under this republican president, Republican house and republican senate. Wish we would address his failure to get immigration legislation. Wish he would address why his republican administration tried to give our ports to the arabs."

Another wasted chance....

19. Dem's have no voice - Bush would simply set up a press conference
He's done this repeatedly in the past six years.

If the Democrats are on to something and try to hold a press conference, the fucking prick will schedule one at the exact same time. And the press will always choose what our Dear Leader has to say over the grumblings of a "few disaffected Democrats."

When I hear people on DU decry the Democrats lack of voice I wonder if they know about Bush's dirty tactics.

It made me mad as hell to hear this. Pure fuckin' politics with no regard to the will of the people.

5. no list yet but...
from this AP report:

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060607/D8I3EAV01.html

we learn that McCain voted against it. Not a good way to get the fundies in your camp, John. He really does have quite a difficult balancing act ahead...

8. I'm depressed.
I'm not married, so I cannot get divorced, but I am not gay, either.

No date for the prom, that's me. ;-)

9. Early Freeper reactions
Here are some quotes (I'm pulling only the overtly political ones). There aren't too many comments on it yet. Suffice it to say that there are no comments such as "well, I'd vote for McCain anyway because he's better than the Dems". At least not yet.

"McCain will NEVER get the Primary vote UNLESS Democrats are allowed to vote in the Republican primary!!"

""...said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a possible presidential candidate in 2008"
Well, he can run, but he can't hide!"

"Just one more reason to vote the rinos out of office this november and during the primaries!!! Get them out. Also this line should tell us something about the real reason this amendment was voted on now:
but supporters say new votes for the measure represent progress that gives the GOP's base reason to vote on Election Day."

14. Good lord
aren't people getting sick of their crap yet?

At least a lot of the media pointed out the futility of the amendment and the fact that it's trotted out every election.

15. Here's the relevant list...
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 10:32 AM by VirginiaDem
From the Fox News story (sorry -- they're first to have the list up):

"Shy 11 votes to go to a final debate, few crossed the political aisle to vote against their party's majority position. Republican Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Judd Gregg, Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chafee and John Sununu voted against the cloture vote. Democratic Sens. Ben Nelson and Robert Byrd voted for it, as they did in 2004.

Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel and Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd and Jay Rockefeller were absent."

17. McCain the only party dissenter here of importance
but, boy, is it ever important. He hasn't yet won over the fundies, despite his recent efforts. This will be a big setback for him.

We do not want to face McCain in the general. I don't care who is running, he will be tough to beat. It is extremely important for the fundies to knock him out of the primaries, the earlier the better. This should help.

16. Don't waste a lot of time celebrating, Call them on Estate Tax
The richest 17 families in America hired a lot of PR hands to get that sucker repealed. Don't let anything divert your attention from the fact that they get billions in a tax cut if the Estate Tax is repealed.

Guess who gets the tab if it is repealed? Bill goes from the very richest of the rich to every man woman and child, regardless of their budget.

Personally, I don't want to see the nation further in debt so Paris Hilton can have even more money to piss away partying.
