Dept of Homeland Security Seizes Democracy For America Website Hard Drives
DHS Seizes Alabama DFA Web Server!
Submitted by EnderW on May 10, 2006 - 9:14pm.Privacy/Surveillance

It has come to my attention that the Department of Homeland Security has seized the Democracy For America organization of Alabama's website hard drives, both primary and backup, and unplugged the system from the Internet.

Apparently, they have also revoked DNS name service for the server as well (A-Record or CNAME referring to the A-Record), as no attempt to connect so much as even resolves an IP address.

Details are as follows:

Dear 2mHost customer,

Around 1:00 pm Eastern time, Wednesday May 10, 2006 server alexandria36 which host your
account for domain name alademocracy.org unplugged by The US Department of Homeland Security
agents to seize server hard drives (the main and backupd drive) beacuse of possible illegal
contents (we belive its child porn contents), They removed the drives to analyse its contents and logs.

Now, obviously DHS doesn't do child porn investigations, as that's the FBI's job, and that was pure speculation on the part of the person who sent the notice to the DFA group.

What DHS is well-known for is political harrassment, and spying on groups opposed to Bush.

More to come...

1. Wasn't a top guy in DHS just found to have been involved in child porn?
Edited on Wed May-10-06 10:41 PM by Roland99
Or maybe it was even two of them? One of them was actually in charge of the program to root out child porn! So, the statement that DHS isn't involved in child porn investigations isn't accurate.

But, they're still fucking hypocrites.

60. Plant porn and take down a mainstream progressive activist organization.
Edited on Thu May-11-06 12:59 AM by BrightKnight
DFA is a mainstream organization of progressive political activists. They are the same people that I see at other progressive organization meetings. They appeared to be reasonably effective. The meetings I went to were crawling with disruptive trolls.

If there was any porn it was planted by some troll on the inside. Using the DHS to harass progressive activists is very troubling. It is Nixonesque.

There are so many mistakes that I wonder if this is a bogus attack on the site by some freeper moran:

Surely DHS would
1) have a standard memo for such purposes
2) at least use spellcheck if they didn't
and
3) not disclose the reason for seizure in such a memo

That's probably the strongest reason for concluding that this isn't any kind of official communication.

Don't assume it is until there's solid evidence.

82. My thoughts exactly (see reply #80)
The email presumably is supposed to have come from the ISP, and it's possible that the ISP is staffed by people who don't have a good command of written English (either because they learned it as a second language, or because they never learned their first language). Still, you would expect more details about what the ISP was planning to do about this; and I think it's going to turn out that this is a juvenile right-wing hack.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm gonna need more information before I start spreading this one.

I really doubt that it is either DHS or a hack. I suspect some freeper type in Alabama faked up and email under the name of DHS and sent it to the server company, who doesn't give a shit... they just shut it down rather than following up to see if it's legit.

Alabama site is definitely inaccessible. DFA includes some pages on the various State organizations, including Alabama ( http://www.dfalink.com/group.php?id=17 ), but the Local site mentioned in the original post ( http://www.alademocracy.org ) and linked on the main DFA's page for Alabama is definitely down.

44. On further reflection, DFA-Alabama might be "collateral damage"
and not the target. The server siezed undoubtably hosted thousands of sites.

But what is missing from the message from the hosting company is instructions to DFA-Alabama on how to get their site back up on another (non-siezed) mschine. And that benign interpretation (that they killed a village to get one criminal) would not account for the "PROHIBITED" message in the WHOIS lookup.

It's possible someone swiped the domain if the alabama dfa didn't have their transfer locked. It's possible if you don't check your emails and you don't lock your domains.

According to the whois for alademocracy.org, it's now hosted on a DNS server in Egypt (NS1.ALEXSRV36.COM NS2.ALEXSRV36.COM) and the Adminstrative/Technical contact has an email [email protected]. However, according to whois, 2webhost is hosted on the name servers dns7.2mhost.com and dns8.2mhost.com.

Could be 2mhost is outsourcing servers in Egypt or that 2mhost is reselling hosting from Egypt...

It's a mystery :(

69. Thanks, but the nameserver
ns1.alexsrv36.com is in the US and the similarly named domain "alexsrv36.com" is also hosted on a US based ISP - the same one that hosted the DFA-Alabama site. The Egyptian dude might be trying to get some advantage by hosting a site that has a similar address to the nameserver used by the ISP, but he appears to be just another user of the ISP that got shut down.

Interestingly, although his site is also unavailable (that's what happens when the hardware gets ripped off by DHS), the Google cache is still available (unlike what was done to the DFA-Alabama cache) - http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:C0-DJNsUwTAJ:alexsrv36.com/+&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a

look at the whois for alademocarcy dot org

scroll down to the nameserver

you see n21.alexsrv36.com

now go to whois.sc and type in ns1.alexsrve.36.com

there you get the egyptian dude...it's the same name server

72. they share the same nameserver
ns1.alexsrve.36.com, but the address for the Egyptian dude's actual website site is alexsrve.36.com. The contents are as cached in the Google cache linked above. That same nameserver is used by all who have their sites hosted on 2mhost.com, including the Egyptian and the DFA-Alabama users. They have nothing in common other than using the same phone directory, even though the Egyptian dude's business has (almost) the same name as that phone directory.

and why does some dude have a site with that same domain name as their host's dns, which is not 2mhost but Voxel Dot Net, Inc? why is the egyptian dude using sales@2mhost for an email when 2mhost hide thier email behind a privacy service?

my belief is that alademocracy got swiped from it's original host (2mhost) and is now on some dude's web host in ny

EDIT; cause 2mhost is on the dns servers: dns7.2mhost.com and dns8.2mhost.com

that doesn't mean that voxel dot net is the thief, but rather that the egyptian dude might have registered that clever domain name and is the actual thief with the spoof email.

then again, the fact that a HOSTING (2mhost) company would hide their admin/tech contact behind a whois privacy service is not a good sign is a host

76. You may be right about that.
It's hard to tell since everything hosted on 2mhost.com seems to be gone. It could even be that the Egyptian bought out the 2mhost.com legitimately, but after 2-3 could-be's I get too confused to continue. The facts are only that DFA-Alabama's site is gone, along with others hosted on the same server like the Egyptian's, but Google's cache of DFA-Alabama is also gone, while the Egyptian's cache is still there, so the purge from Google was selective. Voxel Dot Net, Inc. may be the host for the Egyptian, but it has a different set of name servers (NS.VOXEL.NET)than the Egyptian's alexsrv36.com site, so it is all very unclear to me. The NY server seems to be distinct since the last lookup for alademocracy.org only points to the 2mhost.com server, and not to the NY server, which would be the case if the host had been changed, either legitimatly ot otherwise.

(Color me confused, but concerned.)

Edited on Thu May-11-06 09:03 AM by Plaid Adder
Unless the people who run DFA Alabama's ISP are complete illiterates, that notice was not written by one of them. Here's the notice the clients supposedly got from their host:

"Dear 2mHost customer,

Around 1:00 pm Eastern time, Wednesday May 10, 2006 server alexandria36 which host your
account for domain name alademocracy.org unplugged by The US Department of Homeland Security
agents to seize server hard drives (the main and backupd drive) beacuse of possible illegal
contents (we belive its child porn contents), They removed the drives to analyse its contents and logs."

Grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes from one end to the other: agreement ("server which host"), dropped words (should read "was unplugged"), misspelling ("belive"?), typos ("backupd"?, "beacuse"?), it's/its syndrome (or maybe they are simply collectively affirming their faith in the server's child porn contents; at any rate, the referent is unclear), use of a comma in place of a period, et cetera. When I get messages like this which are supposedly from my bank, my ISP, my credit card company, etc., I assume that they're spam and delete them. I know not everyone has a copy of Strunk & White's handy, but I figure most customer service representatives can write a single sentence and make fewer than seven glaring errors.

If in fact DFA has lost access to its server then it's probably the result of a hack pulled off by whatever 15-year-old baby-con typed that message, in which case all I can say is that child has a bright future writing speeches for George W. after he goes on the lecture circuit.

"Chris Warshaw - DFA wrote on May 11, 2006 04:55 PM:

Re: Democracy for Alabama server

I just got a note from Darryl in Alabama who runs the Alabama for Democracy website. Apparently, the DHS pulled the plug on one of Alabama for Democracy's host's servers that included the AFD website among many others. It was not specifically targeting the AFD site.

There was a problem with "contraband" on some other website on the server that was prohibited. But nevertheless the AFD site was affected by the outage."

Google can show you the following information for this URL:
  • Show Google's cache of www.alademocracy.org

  • Find web pages that link to www.alademocracy.org

95. DHS Fact Sheet: Operation Predator
http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/display?content=1067

I don't know what it has to do with homeland security...

Fact Sheet: Operation Predator

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
July 9, 2003

Operation Predator is a new initiative developed by the Department of Homeland Security's Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to protect children world-wide. As the President has made clear anyone who harms a child will be a priority target of law enforcement in this Administration. This comprehensive DHS program will identify child predators and remove them from the United States (if subject to deportation). Operation Predator will also work to identify children depicted in child pornography to help rescue them, and to assist in prosecuting the people responsible for making and distributing the pornographic material.

This Homeland Security initiative is being driven by ICE's Cyber Smuggling Center in conjunction with every facet of the ICE organization. In addition, ICE will partner with other important law enforcement entities such as DHS's own Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI, and other state and local law enforcement agencies. This initiative is also being conducted in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Identifying Child Predators:

* Creating a National Child Victim Identification System - In an unprecedented partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, ICE, the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Justice are developing the National Child Victim Identification Card Program. Together with its partners in this important effort, ICE's CyberSmuggling Center is hosting the nation's only comprehensive, searchable system for identifying digital child pornography images. With its capacity to search and identify known images, the system is designed to help law enforcement agencies throughout the world identify and rescue children featured in the images. The system is also designed to facilitate prosecution of those who possess or distribute digital child pornography images in the wake of a 2002 Supreme Court decision (Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition) requiring proof that such images depict an actual child. Because the effort leverages a comprehensive partnership with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, this system will eventually contain all known child pornography images on the Internet. With partnership from other law enforcement agencies, this system will eventually contain all known child pornography images. Already, the ICE CyberSmuggling Center has been able to positively identify children featured in roughly 300 images and has provided this information to six different law enforcement agencies nationwide for prosecutorial purposes.
* Enhancing Partnerships - ICE, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI have a long-standing partnership with National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), particularly with its efforts to identify victims of child pornography. ICE is expanding this partnership by assigning a full-time ICE criminal investigator to work at NCMEC, and by using the new capabilities of Operation Predator to help NCMEC rescue missing and exploited children worldwide. ICE agents will also work closely with other programs in the Department of Justice and other federal agencies, in particular the FBI's “Innocent Images” program, to bring to bear the full force of the federal government against child predators.
* Using a Single Web Portal to Access All Publicly Available State Megan's Law Databases- In an effort to make state sex offender registry information more widely available to the public, ICE has joined the ranks of other federal agencies in making links to all state sex offender registries available on our website.
* Coordination with the NCIC Registered Sex Offender Database - ICE has obtained from the FBI the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) registry of sex offenders from all 50 states (approximately 300,000 names) and is querying this list against all indices available to ICE. The objective of this process is to identify those subjects who are linked to investigations of interest to Operation Predator, ICE and its partnership agencies, or who are subject to deportation proceedings. Operation protocol for updated NCIC information and queries will be established on a monthly basis.
* Creation of an ICE Toll Free Reporting Number: ICE has created a toll free telephone number for the public to report information about child sex offenders and others who put children at risk. The toll free number, 1-866-DHS-BICE, will be monitored 24 hours a day by the Law Enforcement Support Center (LESC), which will funnel leads to the appropriate ICE component(s) in a timely manner.

Enhancing Investigative Capabilities

* Forming a New, Multi-Agency Unit at the ICE Cyber Smuggling Center - To oversee and coordinate Operation Predator at the national level, ICE has formed a new unit at its Cyber Smuggling Center. This unit is comprised of various ICE representatives, as well as investigators from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and other federal agencies.
* Appointment of Operation Predator Coordinator - ICE will be appointing an operational coordinator who will report to the Deputy Executive Director of Investigative Services. This new position will be responsible for coordinating Operation Predator activity among ICE law enforcement components and other federal, state, and local agencies.
* Harnessing New Intelligence Capabilities to Target Sexual Predators - The ICE Intelligence Division, as a result of the merger of the former INS and Customs Intelligence units and their respective databases, utilizes the combined information available from these systems to identify and locate major sex violators, criminal fugitives and alien absconders with child sex histories. At the same time, the ICE Cyber Smuggling Center is gathering information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), state Megan's law lists, and other sources. All these leads are being fed to ICE field agents and fugitive operations teams for action.
* Prioritizing Investigations Involving Child Exploitation - ICE's Investigations Division has begun prioritizing its ongoing investigations involving child sex crimes, as well as alien and human smuggling cases in which children are placed at risk. ICE agents have also prioritized efforts to locate those who have been charged with sexual offenses, but remain at large.

Prioritizing Removal Actions:

* Targeting Fugitive Criminal Aliens with Sex Offense Histories for Removal - In addition to their homeland security responsibilities, ICE's Detention and Removal Division has been prioritizing for removal those criminal aliens with a history of sex offenses. These are foreign nationals who have been convicted of sex offenses, served their sentences, but have subsequently evaded law enforcement efforts to remove them from the country. Upon apprehension, these individuals will be held without bond. To help track down these criminal aliens, ICE has posted a "Most Wanted" Criminal Aliens List on its website at http://www.bice.immigration.gov, enabling the public to see photographs of wanted individuals and to call in tips. ICE has created a toll free tip line, 1-866-DHS-BICE, that is staffed seven days a week, 24 hours per day, to receive information from the public.
* Identifying Alien Sex Offender Inmates Before Release from Prison -- ICE's Institutional Removal Program, which identifies alien inmates at prisons who are subject to removal from the country upon completion of their sentences, will ensure that alien sex offender inmates are identified prior to release from prison and removed from the country upon their release. ICE will be partnering with governors around the country to help state and local prisons identify and place detainers on alien sex offender inmates before their release from prison. ICE's Law Enforcement Support Center in Burlington, Vermont, will play a vital role in this effort.

Working With Foreign Governments:

* Deportation Notifications - ICE will notify foreign governments of any aliens with a history of sexual offense being deported to their countries. ICE will also seek information from foreign governments on anyone with a history of sexual offenses seeking entry into the United States.
* Partnering in Investigations - ICE will work closely with foreign law enforcement partners in conducting both covert and overt child pornography and child sex tourism investigations in the United States and around the globe.
