1. I'm thrilled to see the photos trickling in
in never gets old, and as I got to "know" the photographers better it just makes it more exciting.
I love the diversity and the humor.
Keep them coming.

2. I had a really hard time choosing
between the one I really liked and the one everyone else thought would make a good entry. In the end I just decided to go with the one I liked because I don't really want to win anyway.

That made the choice easy. ;)

There are already some terrific shots up there. :hi:

Anyone who has a Golden is blessed, IMHO.
But I could be prejudiced, of course, since they are my favorite breed.
Hope you will share more photos of your fur baby....:hi:

8. The blessed one..
would be someone in my neighborhood, as I don't have a dog.
I wish, though, you could have seen how happy this dog was to be rolling around in the snow; muzzle in, tail wagging. He (?) gathered quite a crowd.

7. It was fun to watch that guy walk across the frozen lake
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 01:48 PM by Celebration
very, very slowly..........

So get THIS!! So the herons went basically nuts when their normal ponds froze over at Shelby Farms, and they are NEVER at this lake--only during the big freeze. Now they are back hidden mostly at Beaver Lake.

I just saw in the paper a picture of a bald eagle at the lake where you pay to catch catfish called Catch 'Em lake (seriously!). The outdoors reporter happened to see him on his rush hour drive through Shelby Farms! He went crazy because I don't think eagles have ever been spotted there. I'd love to know where that eagle is now but I can assure you that it is long gone from Catch 'Em lake!

I had to enter this just because I had too much fun snapping those pictures.

I agree with you Mira that it is REALLY fun watching the pictures being submitted, one by one. I find myself nodding in agreement with all of them and saying "Yup, I get it."

13. the Texas thing!!
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 08:05 PM by Celebration
That's funny. Since I grew up there I know that winter looks like most every other season. Oh, a few pecan trees and hackberry trees lose their leaves.

These are LIVE OAKS, everyone. Yup, they don't lose their leaves in the winter.

I know Houston had at least one or two days of snow this winter (amazing!) but don't know about San Antonio.

It's a really nice photo, with the sun through the trees. I'm sure glad you referenced Texas in the title, or people wouldn't get it.

I'm glad you had more luck than me (and from the quality of the shot, you had much more luck than me). The one day we had any snow here, I was feeling just good enough to walk to the corner store to grab some milk. I took a few shots but nothing remotely good enough to enter.

32. It was just ice on the side of the road. I ran it through a
lomo filter with contrast jacked up a bit. A floe is actually a floating piece of ice, but I wanted to play with the word a bit because the ice is "floating" in isolation from its surroundings.

34. the Lomo filter is a plugin for GIMP. Other editors should
have one or a detailed instruction to do your own. Or you can find an old Lomo camera and do it old school.

37. Triangles repeated three times starting front center with the
snow on the rock, then the exposed rock. Behind that there is another dark triangle. There's beauty in threes.

A good eye is seeing something that makes you want to take a picture, and once you have it downloaded, you still see what attracted you. You may not be able to identify that attraction, but it works for you and others.

In this case it is triangles. There is something inside us that is attracted to triangles.

39. To Xipe Totec - with the beautiful Medusa photos
We would love to have one of them, but only one.
This is your first time submitting a photo, so what you did is reserve a space. That's a good thing. Look over the others, read the comments, familiarize yourself with the forum, and maybe even go back in the threads and see how the contests play out.

We have a contest every month, so you can just go back to the January contest.

After you are a bit more used to how it all works, chose a photo of your three, and title it and remove the others.
I'll send you this in a private message as well, so you'll be sure to get it.

55. Thank you for your consideration and kind words.
That picture was one that almost got away. I had been out in the cold for way too long. I could see the shot, but couldn't figure out a way to get it. Just as I was ready to pack up my gear I twisted my trusty Benbo tripod into an extreme position and found that it might just reach. Some of the details would have been sharper, but at full extension, the steady wind had an effect due to the slow shutter speed required for the flowing water.

Lomo floe is dramatic to the max and has wonderful proportions, the ducks are about as pitifully hungry looking as the title suggests, and I dropped my jaw the minute I SAW Frozen Curve.
A real solid favorite.

May be my favorite out of the whole bunch of pictures. It is at the very bottom, though. Sometime we should do a study to see if placement of the photo affects the results. It does take looking at it twice, and I think most people just take a quick glance at these things before voting.

But sometimes we are a bit like Lake Woebegone, where all the children are above average.

All of the photos in the final group deserve to be "above average", LOL.
