Gillian Anderson to guest star on Dr. Who.

The BBC is reportedly close to signing Gillian Anderson to play a villain in an upcoming episode of "Doctor Who." The network is already billing the battle between Anderson's character and The Doctor as 'the ultimate sc fi showdown.'

The 40 year old Anderson shot to stardom in the 1990s when she played Dana Scully alongside David Duchovny on the "X-Files" television series. The show has always been popular with fans of the sci fi genre, spawning a spin-off series and two movies. Anderson herself has always been a fan favorite, holding the title of 'sci fi's sexiest actress' for several years while the show was on the air.

It would be a major shot in the arm for the British series to land Anderson, a move which would certainly mean ratings gold on both sides of the Atlantic.

A un-named source told the British newspaper, the Daily Express, "Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following following and it's felt it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who.

1. That's exactly what I thought!
Who knew she could look so sexy? Wow and good for her. But thanks for the story, I love Dr. Who.

2. I've always thought she had a kind of classic beauty.
But when I saw that pic my jaw dropped.

I haven't watched Dr. Who since the Tom Baker days, and I remember the movies with Peter Cushing (one of my fave actors). I've caught some new episodes in the last year and they were cool, but I tend to avoid any show where I have to follow it from week to week. Plus, I don't have cable anymore, and I don't watch much unless there's a ball, a puck, or an animal in it anyways. :)

3. io9 says Anderson will play The Rani
For anyone who doesn't remember, The Rani was an amoral Time Lady with a penchant for performing bizarre biological experiments on unwitting subjects (aka humans). She only appeared in two serials and the short 1993 Children In Need special but the character was originally developed as an alternative villian to The Master. Of course, with the rumored re-return of The Master, the Meddling Monk (another Time Lord gone amok), and now The Rani, one wonders where all these Time Lords and Ladies are coming from if Gallifrey really was destroyed in the Time War with the Daleks. Last of the Time Lords, my ass.

Still, if they're going to start bringing back Gallifreyans, one wonders where Romana is. Depending whether or not one counts the Cosgrove Hall/Big Finish animations from the 1990s as canon or not (but when has canon ever stopped the new Doctor Who?), she apparently found her way back from E Space to become leader of Gallifrey. For my money, I'd like to see them bring back Ace who, if Sylvester McCoy's Doctor had been allowed to run its course, was ultimately going to be brought to Gallifrey to become a Time Lady.

Here's the io9 story: http://io9.com/5225021/x+files-star-joins-doctor-who-the-fanfic-almost-writes-itself
