Is DU the right place for Black Progressives?
seems like the pumas are more welcomed on here then those of us of color who support our President.

1. Has it ever been??
No snark. I'm really asking that question.

I've been a Dem-leaning independent for a while now. When I see posts here calling for liberals to join forces with teabaggers and the irrational hatred projected towards this President from people who can't scream loud and hard enough that they are members of his "base," I know I made the right decision.

Angee, I am encouraged though because outside of DU, I'm sure you've seen as well as I have that even the most liberal of liberal bloggers, public figures and publications have been looking around at this onslaught of white, liberal rage and saying "have you people lost your damned minds??!" If DU continues in this current vein, it will become even more of a joke and an echo chamber for fools. So the answer to your question appears to be "No."

2. and alienate the other democratic base
if they keep this up, can you imagine Sunday morning sermons. People will come out of church in droves to create praying circles around Obama, rebuking the devil.

But you can't tell them anything because they know best. When their preferred congressperson, senator lose an election because of poor minority turnout who you think they are going to point the finger at?

5. People scream about GD being the place of "intelligent discussion" (I know, girl. Try not to laugh)
but to get a minimum 125 recs in GD, all you have to do is type some mortifyingly moronic 3rd grade crap that slams the President. That's it. And if someone does post something anti-Obama in GD and it DOESN'T get at least 125 recs, they just keep posting more tepid, tired and tedious OPs until one of them does. For every really good and thoughtful OP critical of the President in GD, there are 14 pieces of utter garbage.

It's getting to the point where the Greatest Page should be renamed the Hater-ist Page. One OP of solid, flaming bs after another. I swear, it's like half these people ain't even TRYING anymore. No source is too low or too shaky as long as it trashes Obama.

When their preferred congressperson, senator lose an election because of poor minority turnout who you think they are going to point the finger at?

You're right. But if that's the risk these people are willing to take then let them take it.

:) I was only gone a day! I'm only checking in this forum and the barack obama forum. Keep the names of other sites coming! I've been enjoying myself and feeling a lot less angry reading reasonable posts!!

4. I don't think so because the word progress
has different meaning for different groups. Correct me if I'm wrong but as infuriating and frustrating as it is, progress to me has meant slow changes.

6. it has in the past, but does it have to mean that?
republicons get things done, albeit harmful, regressive, horrible things. democrats triangulate, capitulate, and negotiate away...until they come with a compromise that is not that much different than what republicans might propose. does anyone really believe republicons are unhappy with the turd that is about to be flushed down our throats by a democratic-controlled senate? NO...they only oppose the bill because they don't want democrats and the president to succeed.
let's hope the final version of this bill is better.

7. Well, I'm not exactly sure all
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 05:56 PM by Kind of Blue
what you're saying. But I think I agree with a lot of what you say.

I was answering the question: is DU the right place for Black Progressives. I'm specifically thinking of problems that plague the AA community and how DU is effective (not so, IMO) in addressing them or reacts (not well, IMO) when the threads come up. Quite frankly, I think that's why this group exists within the wider site because DU is not conducive to Black Progressive issues and here we can discuss them without much arguments that derail a particular topic/issue.

If you were referring to my personal definition of progress as slow and your response does it have to mean that, my answer is no it doesn't have to mean that unless you want change to come violently.

on edit: included better what the OP asked.

8. That's a fair question
it's hard to see when issues that pertain directly to POC go straight to the bottom, while fluff and POC that have angered/annoyed the majority populace flame for days.

13. Are there other site
recommendations for black progressives where we could converse on issues? If so, please let me know. It seems Black Planet and Black Voices are the largest AA communities I've found, but I hope there are more options out there.

I have started to read Oliver Willis as well

I'm disgusted with a large section of DU now. They are fighting this President more than they fought Bush.

19. Jack and Jill can be a bit ignorant at times
But even at its absolute worst, it is light years beyond DU. I've lost count of how many posters that I've enjoyed here that wouldn't step foot on this site now.

I'm to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if the administrators of this site were to put up a notice saying DU was closing shop soon, it's gotten that moronic and hysterical here.

20. Agreed.
Every day, this site gives talking points to Republicans. They only need to view the main boards and they are fully briefed. A shame really. Nothing on DU has however turned me off supporting Barack Obama as President.

In fact it has made me more committed to doing so.

a lot from the Black Progressives who have been on DU over the years.

And, just as disgusted by what permeates the gp in the name of cheap pot shots at our President Obama.

Those who are interested in the reality of what this President has actually accomplished and will continue to accomplish.. welcome ya'll. :)

24. I swear we have some kind of mental connection. I was thinking
of this just yesterday.

I really feel there is an effort by the left and right to bring down this administration. I just think of the support my community gave Clinton and look at how Obama is getting shit on by every mofo with a microphone. He can't do jack shit right and nothing is ever good enough. We've all seen this story before. It's hard for them to see us in positions of leadership. Bring him down to show how Hillary, Kucinich or whoever else would have been so much better! We know that's all bullshit. The man isn't a damn dictator, but the house and senate get a pass on all their bullshit. No matter what someone does it's Obama's fault.

25. Girl, I'm getting to the point that I just can't take it anymore
I really can't. And firedup, I can usually take just about anything. But it's the double standards, the incessant whining, the insincerity and the straight up LIES that I just don't think I can deal with anymore. On one hand, we all KNEW this was going to happen from the minute that man stood on that stage in Grant Park and waved at the crowd with his family. But knowing something will happen and seeing it, living it is just too much. My brain knew this would happen but my heart is still taking it hard.

We've all seen this story before.

Say it again and again. There is not a black person in the Western world that does not know this story. Whole damn families of black people know this story. And often the more intelligent, hard working and ambitious you are, the more times you've been forced to LIVE this story.

By the way, I thought about you guys last night when I was trying to watch my brand new DVD that just came out and that I just bought. Guess what it is?? Yep, I brought old Tiana, Ms. Charlotte and Naveem home for my husband and I to watch after we put our babies to bed last night. Girl, I made it 20 minutes before he was jabbing me in the ribs talking 'bout, "babe, you're snoring" and we only put it on at 8:15.

And now she's playing victim, saying her first amendment rights have been squelched. Poor oppressed white person can't be racist in public without reprimand. Where's the freedom? :eyes:

Actions have consequences, Dr. Laura.
