I am setting up an old computer - HELP with mouse driver
I am setting up a very old computer for my 5 year old daughter (I do not even know the specs on it, except that it is a Windows 95 machine, and does not have any USB ports on it.) The case is SUPER DUPER old, because the keyboard connects with the BIG plug.

My problem is I have a PS2 mouse for it, but the danged thing does not recognize the mouse. The mouse is a two button mouse with no scroll wheel and appears to have been marketed by Compaq. Is there any place I can get a driver for this mouse, or do I have to do a major search for a serial mouse (gawd forbid).

Thanks in advance.

2. I have downloaded a few drivers that looked like they might work
At this point, Win 95 actually installs the mouse, does the reboot, then I get the message that there is no mouse. It is in device manager though.

3. Maybe the mouse port is fried or is something else using that port?

Mouse Problems

http://www.hydrocad.net/mouse.htm

Windows 95/98/NT

Windows 95 (and later) contains its own mouse driver, and automatically makes the mouse available
to all Windows and DOS programs. A separate mouse driver in CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT is not required,
and will actually conflict with the Windows driver, causing HydroCAD not to see the mouse.

1) Make sure your mouse works within Windows. If not, correct this problem before you continue.

2) On the control panel, double-click System, select the Device Manager tab, and expand the Mouse entry.

A) If the mouse has an "x" or "!" over it, it isn't working properly.
Remove the driver and restart Windows, allowing Windows to select the correct mouse driver.

B) If there is more than one mouse entry, they will probably conflict with each other.
Remove both devices and restart Windows as outlined above.

3) If HydroCAD still fails to recognize the mouse, an old mouse driver may be present in CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Select Start and RUN and type SYSEDIT. View the windows for CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Disable any statement relating to the mouse by typing "REM " at the beginning of the line.
Close the windows, saving the changed files. Restart Windows and try HydroCAD again.

4) If the mouse still fails to work, select Start/Run and type mem /c/p.
You should not see any drivers related to the mouse.
If you see a driver, find out how it is being loaded and remove it.

5) Finally, make sure you don't have any other devices configured to use the same port as the mouse.

5. I had an old W95 that would only accept a mouse on the 9pin serial port.
You could pick up an adapter which has round ps/2 on one end and 9 pin serial on the other. Older equipment usually had 2 serial ports labeled A and B or com1 and com2. Use A/com1 however it labeled.

Also check the bottom of mouse to see if there is a small toggle switch for PS2/IBM. Set to PS/2 if present and try that first.

4. Is the ball on the bottom of the mouse turning freely..
If it's an old mouse, they often get all kinds of gunk in the ball and sometimes stop working completely.

Take the mouse ball out and try to spin the little wheels that ride on it with your finger and see if the cursor moves.
