15. Congratulations, and welcome!
I'm heading back to start setting up my classroom Monday; another year of 6th/7th/8th language arts.

One of the things I like best about August is that, after a rest, I'm always eager to see them again. Here's to the coming year; a successful first for you, and a productive year for all.

17. Congrats from another career-change teacher!
I certainly understand what you mean when you say, "For the first time in my life, I am very proud of my job."

I'm starting my first full year as a 9th grade global history teacher this fall.

18. Congrats!
I am also a middle school teacher. Alot of people will roll their eyes and say something to the effect that "middle school! how awful! That's the worst age to teach!" yadda, yadda.

I just want to say that teaching middle school is awesome. You have to have a sense of humor, and realize that the kids are still kids trying to be adults, and rarely succeeding with oftentimes very amusing results. Have fun with them - they like teachers who are weird and torment them in fun ways. I had lunch duty this year (never again! I hated every minute!) On halloween, I did my "witchy" laugh (think Glenda the bad witch in Wizard), and they all thought it was hysterical. On random days, I would bring pieces of candy with me, ask some trivia ?'s, and give the candy to anyone who got the right answers. Every other Friday, the parents group would sell fresh popcorn. I would buy a couple of bags and just give them away to any student I thought would appreciate it.

That said, keep in mind that they are very sensitive, and will often misconstrue a comment you make in a way that you absolutely did not intend.

They are: disorganized, rarely awake before 9 AM, have no idea how to study or take notes (generalizing here - not ALL 7th graders are like this, just most), inquisitive, intellectual sponges (although often will not remember much an hour later).

I teach 7th & 8th grade, and I far prefer 7th grade. Why? They are still "young" enough to have fun with - although with 8th graders you can start to have semi-serious conversations with. Eighth graders tend get full of themselves (especially if they're the oldest in the building) by 2nd semester. I call it 8th grade-itis.

I started my teaching career in the high school, and after 20 yrs., I would never go back. I am a middle school teacher and proud of it!

I'll share some advice I learned from older teacher friend....

Be Firm. Be Fair. Be Consistent.

I would add... Be Human.
