Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 11:19 PM by Carolab
Looks like a fair crowd--about 1000?

On edit--just read the Strib's report--1500 in Mpls. and over 300 in St. Paul. YEAH!

30. The sad part.....
...is that the little girl did a better job planning for fitting the word "please" on her sign than Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz did planning for the war's consequences.

15. I never even saw the DU banner, I would have said hello.
The march was very large. TV news says "a thousand" but we were 2-3 lanes wide (at least 10 wide) and far more than 100 ranks long, I was near the front, which was about a city block ahead of me, and never saw the tail end despite looking back when I thought there might be chance for a longer overview. KOMO-TV was nasty enough to show images of the Seattle Center rally at the very beginning, or even before the beginning of the rally (not sure since I got there after it had begun), when the crowd there was relatively sparse. The TV stations are real quick to get their aerial shots of a house fire, but they never seem to want to show the full length of a protest march. However the commentary continued about the opinion polls showing a rise in mistrust and skepticism about the invasion.

18. Nice meeting you, too
And thanks, AuntJen, for taking and posting these, and especially for being there with that great DU banner.
I've been seeing estimates from 1,000 on local media to 5,000 by the organizers - the P.I. did at least mention that larger number.
As AuntJen's pics show, some groups held their own rallies elsewhere, then came together for the march, so the number grew as the day went on. Also, a lot of people ducked in and out of the Center House to shake off some of the rain for a moment and get something warm to drink.

27. Nice, but have you ever heard of compressing for the web...?
Seriously. I've got dial-up. I don't know what resolution your photos are at, but I just spent the last eight minutes letting this page load, and only wound up with about the top 20% of some (not all) of the pictures. Not even enough to be able to tell what's going on in any of them (although I think I can see some trees in a couple).

Please, have mercy on those of us without broadband!

Couldn't get it to work with the BBS. If you could let me know how to get that to work, I'd appreciate it :-) the pics are reduced for the web, btw... original size was 800K+ per photo.

did do which was heartfelt contribution. I know a community as well as some students from Western State University helped to make the prayer flags that were used in the Olympia, WA vigil also held March 19. The prayer flags are made with the names of each of the fallen soldiers and flags are also made to represent the Iraqi families lives who have been lost in this war. It takes a lot of work to make up 1,522 flags and put the names of the soldiers on them and anyone who participates soon begins to feel the reality of what they are doing and what has happened in Iraq.

The prayer flags were used by two young women who were Speakers at the Olympia event. These two young women share in common the loss of husband and younger brother who was killed in Iraq in 2003. One young woman is his young widow and herself a citizen soldier in the National Guard. The other young woman is his older sister and now a Gold Star Family for Peace having lost a loved one in Iraq. They had 800 of the 1522 flags completed by the time of the vigil but it will be an ongoing process to complete all the flags.

At vigils that we hold representing MFSO / Gold Star Families for Peace we encourage participants to help make more flags. These flags will be used throughout the state ... they are Washington's prayer flags for our troops. Oregon also has a completed set of prayer flags which are used throughout Oregon state. We found it too difficult to get the flags back and forth between the two states and decided Washington should have it's own set.

I know this because they both work with our own Military Families Speak Out, Pacific Northwest (www.nwmfso.org) and while I was the last speaker on the program at the Seattle Center rally, these young women were speaking in Olympia.

And DU, when I looked out at the crowd and saw the banner for Democratic Underground, it warmed my heart as I felt I was among friends. Thank you DU.

The photo above that shows the monstrously huge banner 'Stop the Back Door Draft, Rally at U.W. April 6, Military Families Speak Out, was made by a friend to MFSO and we appreciate his banners which can be seen on many freeway overpasses in Seattle.

Lastly, at the Seattle Center rally, our MFSO table had hundreds of copies of the Resolution to Governor Gregoire to bring home the National Guard. A small delegation of us presented the Resolution already to Executive Policy Advisor, Antonio Ginatta of the Governor's Executive Policy office on March 7, 2005. We are asking people to sign the Resolution, add your address and mail to her office. The resolution is available for download in pdf at our website www.nwmfso.org

A Resolution to Oregon Governor, Kulongoski was presented to him on March 1 and that Resolution is also available in pdf to download at our website. Same thing, asking people to sign it and add address and mail to his office.

The protest/rally/vigils are done now, but there is more that can be done and we invite you to help in distributing the Resolutions in both states and encouraging the citizens to act to actively bring the troops home.

Thank you,
Lietta Ruger, a Pacific Northwest MFSO family, with two loved ones who are now young Iraq veterans having served an extended tour of 15 months in Iraq. Both are under orders now for 2nd deployment to Iraq.

Also included are three pictures of Patty Murray speaking at the Frank Church Banquet in Boise. If anyone noticed the Times/PI coverage of the protest, there was a picture of me on the front page (top righthand picture showing where story was on protests in local section) and then on the front page of the local section, the smaller picture. I am in the white sweatshirt and I look really angry!

I couldn't go to the rally  but I actually ended up driving by the Center and saw the crowd. So cool, DUers!
BTW, is was PISSING down rain that day and it was cold - the huge turnout-in spite of the weather-shows how dedicated the forces are.
As per usual, the media gave the day's events such shitty coverage.
Great pics - thanks for posting!
