Kurita: “We can’t justify expending American lives for oil,”
Senate hopeful says 2006 will be good year for Democrats

ROGERSVILLE—Democrats have an excellent chance to win the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Bill Frist, according to State Senator Rosalind Kurita.

Kurita, a Clarksville Democrat who has announced she is seeking the seat, visited Hawkins County Wednesday.

“I believe 2006 will be a good year for Democrats. We can win this seat. Tennessee is not a ‘red’ state, a Republican state. We have a Democrat governor who will be on the ballot for reelection and we can elect a senator,” she said.

Kurita, a registered nurse, has served in the state senate since 1996 and noted in her last campaign she was reelected with 62 percent of the vote while President George Bush carried the district with 61 percent of the vote.

She said the Democrat party needs to reclaim its role as the party that represents the middle class and the best way to do that is to send “real people who have had to live real lives” to Washington as elected representatives.

The state senator said the district she represents includes military personnel and families assigned to Fort Campbell and she said she believes the war in Iraq is an important issue.

“I don’t think we can just cut and run,” Kurita said, “But we need to have a plan for bringing our troops home because it (the war) can’t go on forever.”

“We can’t justify expending American lives for oil,” Kurita said.

1. What about Halliburton's stock price?
Isn't that worth a little bloodshed? Bechtel, maybe. Or the Carlyle Group?

All Things Considered, December 24, 2003 · Current criticism over Halliburton's lucrative Iraq contracts has some historians drawing parallels to a similar controversy involving the company during Lyndon B. Johnson's administration.

Nearly 40 years ago, Halliburton faced almost identical charges over its work for the U.S. government in Vietnam -- allegations of overcharging, sweetheart contracts from the White House and war profiteering. Back then, the company's close ties to President Johnson became a liability. Today -- as NPR's John Burnett reports in the last of a three-part series -- Halliburton seems to be distancing itself from its former chief executive officer, Vice President Dick Cheney.

5. Thanx for Story
I am glad that NPR was able to print that, all things considered. The fact that there is now a right winger in charge of things on PBS, I am surprised.
