FL woman found guilty in son's abduction

A Broward County, Fla., jury has found a woman guilty of violating a custody order after she allegedly abducted her 11-year-old son because she feared he would turn gay living with his father, the Miami Herald reported May 9.

MacDonald, an artist who now lives in Key West, claimed her son was being molested by her ex-husband’s lover and might “turn gay,” the Herald reported.

"I thought my son was going to get AIDS and die," MacDonald said in court.

But during the trial, the boy testified that his mother had told him to lie about being molested.

"My mother told me it was necessary," the teenager testified. "She thought it was unfair that I lived with my dad pretty much all the time."

MacDonald’s attorney, David Bogenschutz, referred to 9/11, the Holocaust, the Old Testament and the mothering instincts of South American beetles in arguing that his client acted out of a desperate desire to protect her son.
