THE INSIDER
To the Aid of Their Party

The Republican National Committee got a big boost from Lakelanders Barney Barnett and Carol Jenkins Barnett to the tune of $100,000, contribution records show. Barney Barnett, vice chairman of Publix Super Markets Inc., contributed $50,000 and Carol Barnett also donated $50,000 to the party. She is the daughter of Publix founder George Jenkins, and is the president of Publix Super Markets Charities. The contributions are posted at www.fundrace.org.

1. Yes, all I buy from Publix is the fresh Italian bread in their bakery....
...but I think I'll stop doing that also. Their policies on the glass ceiling for women moving into upper management is a scandal in Florida.

2. Look for the Hollis surname there as well.
They are/were among the founders, dad Hollis being the VP at one time. Son Mark was president of Publix or is. They are big Bush supporters, or were.

Also Clanton or Blanton surname...Publix is Bush country.

16. My sis works for Publix.
Judging from some of the "stories" that get passed around the cafeteria their employees make Fox News pale in comparison.

for example:

Did ya know that John Kerry had a fight with Sen. Heinz and a month later Heinz was killed in a plane crash AND Kerry married his wife two months later.

Sad. So very sad.

3. I suspected they were right-leaning when I saw the religious books
and stuff in the deli area. Ever notice how they cover up Cosmo and other magazines in the check-out line if there is anything sexual on the cover?

4. The Hollises are Southern Baptist, but moderate about it.
One local church just split up along conservative/moderate lines which of course involved the extremism that is going on.....I was very glad to see the Hollis family went with the moderate bunch.

Kash 'n Karry will change their name to Sweetbay and will try to compete with Whole Foods and Fresh Market for the upper income demographic.http://www.sweetbaysupermarket.com/home.shtml
Sweetbay will not have discount cards like KnK because it attracts bargain hunters not lifestyle shoppers.Seems like grocery shopping is moving toward upper-class boutique vs lower-class feedlot and middle market is feeling the squeeze.I prefer Costco because Sam's is like a scene from Soylent Green,Costco does not play FOX news on 25 plasma televisions but has a demonstration channel so I do not loose my appetite as soon as I walk in the door.I heard a stockbroker say companies like Coach and Whole Foods which profit from the upper class tax cut will grow as well as giant mass market companies one of which the broker called Procter&Ghetto.

15. No cigarette lighter in the Prius.
I went to Sweetbay and was shocked to see tobacco products in the checkout line where there is usually candy to tempt children. In the tobacco settlement of 1997 the FDA would regulate the sale of tobacco,no vending machines accessible to children,no billboards 1000 feet from schools.FDA regulation 897.16(i) allows self-serve displays only if minors cannot access it and obviously the checkout line is accessible.http://ash.org/completefda.html The Supreme Court ruled later that the FDA did not have authority to regulate tobacco http://www.fda.gov/opacom/campaigns/tobacco/default.htm but Sweetbay must want minors to steal a pack of cigarettes to experiment with and become addicted.Upscale shoppers Sweetbay wants to attract will now have to deal with teaching their children a lesson about taking something and not paying but instead of returning some chicklets, little Johnny will return a box of Dutch Masters.

9. This is the email response I got from Publix when I sent a boycott letter
Thank you for your email, Lyn. We appreciate our customers taking
the time
to contact us because we care about your comments, and we value your
business.

Lyn, we commend citizens who become involved in the political
process. At
Publix, we have more than 120,000 associates and each of them has a
right to
support a candidate, a political party or organization. Publix's
business,
however, is grocery retailing, and we try very hard to provide our
customers
with quality products and stellar service. We hope that you
understand our
position, and that you will continue to give us the privilege to
serve you.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us. If we can be of
any
further assistance regarding this matter, please either call our
Consumer
Relations toll-free number at 1-800-242-1227, write us at the Publix
Super
Markets Corporate Office, PO Box 407, Lakeland, FL 33802, ATTN:

Relations, or contact us at our website, publix.com and mention your

23. Here is the response I got
Thank you for your email. We appreciate our customers taking the time to
contact us. In regards to your email, federal law prohibits corporations
from making contributions to federal candidates. Therefore, Publix Super
Markets, Inc. did not contribute to President Bush's or Senator Kerry's
campaign.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us. If we can be of any
further assistance regarding this matter, please either call our Consumer
Relations toll-free number at 1-800-242-1227, write us at the Publix Super

here is my response to little ol' Leslie.

Really, well maybe you should check out this site.

Not trying to be hostile, like I said I always enjoyed shopping at Publix,
the store was always clean, service was wonderful, and your store brand was
just as good as any other. However my Christian morals can no longer
reconcile the support of greed, corruption, and killing for profit.

I know Publix can not stop individuals from supporting a candidate, however
I don't have to continue to give them money to do so.

17. Publiz was my only other option!!
Well crap.

We have 5 grocery stores here in Ocala.

Wal-Mart (major rep contributions)
Publix (I as of yesterday couldn't find major contributions)
Albertsons (the store is so fucked up I didn't even want to look but I did and found some Repub contributions)
Kash N Karry (again so fucked up I didn't want to to look)
Winn Dixie (I'm not going to kill myself not to donate the the Repugs. Sorry but the meat there is NASTY)

Since Publix is out does anybody know anything about Kash N Karry, They are the only grocer that I havne't been able to link to the Repugs.

19. See #8 above.
Kash n Karry is being phased out in favor of Sweetbay. Sounds like they want to be a "boutique" grocer moreso than a budget friendly grocer.

25. My remail response confirms they donated.
Thank you for your email, Angela. We appreciate hearing from our customers
because we care about your comments, and we value your business.

Angela, you are referring to a personal contribution, not a company
contribution, from two Board members of Publix. We believe that all
Americans have the ability to support or contribute to the candidate or
party of their choice. We believe our country was founded on choice and
therefore extends to its citizens, as the constitution states. We hope that
you understand our position.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us. If we can be of any
further assistance regarding this matter, please either call our Consumer
