Then, John McCain decided he would run for President.
Against a ne'er do well "gubner" from Texas called "Dubya".

McCain came out of the box strong, winning, actually destroying "Dubya" in New Hampshire.
Then came South Carolina and it was over.
Why?
Because the "Christian" guy I'd like to have a beer with, "Dubya" said he had a illegitimate "colored" daughter, and HOW "Christian" was that, and John McCain was done.

First of all, I met Max Cleland during the Kerry campaign and got to shake his hand. He is awesome and it was an honor.
I respect the military (brother and father served) and always thought McCain's POW story was important and honorable whether I agreed with his politics or not.
However, I am becoming more jaded on his story since the repubs did what they did to Kerry questioning his patriotism with the swift boat liars.
I don't know whether this is true or not but I came across this info on the Vietnam Veterans against McCain website

According to this McCain was a pampered prisoner who gave interviews (they have the transcripts) on Vietnamese propaganda radio during captivity. If this is true then he was not "tortured every day and never broke" as the right wingers try to spin this story.
Understand that I am not saying he was wrong to do it (none of us can ever know how we will react until we are in that situation) or that he is unpatriotic for doing it.
I am just saying that it conflicts with the story the media presents of him (especially in light of the mockery of Kerry's purple hearts)
I just think that someone in the media at least needs to ask these questions so he is held to the same standard as other military candidates.

it was billed as a rally for veterans, and indeed, there were a lot of men who were the right age to be Vietnam vets.

No one knew who the warm-up speakers were going to be, but suddenly the crowd exploded in cheers. The reason was that Max Cleland was being wheeled onto the stage.

There was more genuine enthusiasm in that crowd for Cleland than for Kerry.

After all, he was Clinton's director of veterans' affairs, so he was well known among them.

How it got distorted that a POW like McCain, without any record of "heroism" before, during, or after capture, is a travesty in the use of the term. The promoters of the "hero" word are clearly the media talking heads, who never served in uniform, who want to ingratiate themselves with the politician who is a veteran. A cheapening of the use of the word "hero".
