so I wouldn't disturb my husband who was sleeping..Well, when I saw that I screamed out loud at the tv and immediately contacted CNN... so much for not disturbing my husband! I hope media matters or someone else picks this up. After Dobbs the other night about the "plagerism" and Michelle and now this, it is clear where CNN loyalty lies.

It shows how much they're about accurate reporting, NOT.

Not surprising since we know how these people see the world.

31. If I hadn't seen this kind of thing happen all too often, I'd presume it an honest mistake
But when this much too coincidental sort of mistake happens, it always seems to happen with a conservative/right-wing slant. Of course it does. Liberals oppose censorship and respect people who can't hear. Most commonly I see them redact naughty language that is clearly spoken. Once I saw a guest on CSPAN take a call on gay issues and each time "gay" was replaced with the word "bumblebum". It was clearly intentional as it happened three times completely censoring the answer by turning the subject into nonsense. I wish I had done what Jen did with posting the screen capture.

Censorship is a recurring issue of importance because a lot of people who can't hear have to deal with other people deciding for them what information is important or worth knowing. Maybe the person who told the joke that everyone else is laughing at decides that "not important" to the one who couldn't hear it because he didn't want to make the effort to tell it again. Maybe the person interpreting a speaker's argument in favor of gay marriage or abortion rights is "not important" because it goes against God. Maybe the person typing captions decides that the plain spoken naughty words are "not important" even when they're not bleeped in the audio. It's not so unusual. I'm glad these issues are being addressed.

39. Obviously An Accident, But I Don't Expect Some Here To Open Their Minds To That.
It is shocking on first view, but upon using some critical thinking skills it becomes fairly obvious it's simply an accident. I say that for a few reasons. First of all, barely anyone uses closed captioning. To find it logical that someone would plot to use the CC system to perpetrate such a thing, in hopes of causing this 'subliminal' tying of obama to osama (as some have claimed) is beyond far fetched. Second of all, take a moment to sit back and think about how quickly the people typing need to do their short type (or whatever the hell it's called) in order to keep up with the spoken word. Are some really trying to hypothesize that in that split second moment, not having any idea what the host was about to say and having only an instantaneous moment in time to type something, that the person doing the captioning came up with this lightning fast evil plot of "hahaha, here's my chance to call Hillary al queda!!! bwahahahaha!!!", followed by instantaneously typing it? C'mon now. Let's use our heads. It was obviously some sort of finger slip or letter combination that caused the short hand for al queda to appear instead of Hillary, as per Magic Rat's explanation in the other thread. That explanation makes LOADS of sense, whereas thinking there was some behind the scenes closed captioning conspiracy by some schmuck in a 3rd party company to denigrate Obama, is all sorts of far fetched when you really think about. Course, I'm also certain some here won't consider reasonable explanations for a second, since in GDP critical thinking skills have kinda gone bye bye for a while.

Occam's Razor people. Occam's razor. Take a moment to think.

44. OMC, normally I'd agree that you make some
good points. And God knows how very easy it is to make a mistake in these kinds of things.

HOWEVER. I have been using cc for nearly eight years now, and I still do not believe this was an accident. EVERY TIME something like this happens it's a mistake in favor of a republican or the RW. EVERY. TIME. And I've seen many, many other blatant misrepresentations and outright changings of words that, in context, you can tell are not accidents. Consider what kd was saying about watching WA Journal with his partner who is deaf and seeing the word "gay" being replaced by "bumblebum" EVERY time, rendering the conversation meaningless to the deaf/HI person who could not at least somewhat hear the broadcast at the same time or who didn't have family or friends around to advise as to what was really being said. I've seen that crap happen far more than once with cc, and it is not an accident.

And I'm fortunate enough to be able to at least still hear, though with a significant hearing loss, and to have my husband and friends around to tell me what was really said if something doesn't jibe or is confusing. For those who don't have that, such cc "mistakes" amount to censorship. You may not give a damn, and others who aren't deaf or HI may not give a damn, but that's a pretty major issue for many of us.

45. I use CC a lot myself because of my lack of hearing
and I'm no longer shocked at what is typed. I can hear, but I lose so much of every conversation because any sort of background noise makes me lose every 3rd word or so, so I normally completely mishear what is being said, or just totally mis a joke or something.

That being said, the most common thing I read is cuss words like fuck and/or shit. There's also been a few times when the CC went off the deep end and started typing out an old joke.

Anyhow, anyone else without hearing loss, should start using CC because there's always something outrageous every 6 hours or so. :)

47. "If you can" is FUK in Steno..."fuck" is FU*K
that might be why you see curses a lot in odd places.

"So this is" is STHIS in Steno, and the S and T buttons are right next to eachother on each side of the steno keypad. So you can easily do SHIT when you mean to do STHIS.

just some usless info for all those who rely on closed captioning and might not realize how the process works.
