CNN is reporting that Madonna is ready to pull an "Oprah" for Clinton
NY Daily News has the same story:

Madonna will help Hillary Clinton combat the Oprah-powered campaign of Barack Obama. Her Madgesty, whose charity work in Malawi has been supported by Bill Clinton's foundation, tells us she stands ready to serve.

http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2007/12/11/2007-12-11_side_dish.html

Not sure this is such a good idea, but it might attract some young voters.

Apparently Madonna expressed her support for Hillary in an interview earlier this month:

Of all the things one of American’s most famous expats could have been asked about on the red carpet, Madonna was asked which of the two front runners she liked best.

Madonna answered Hillary and, when asked why, said, “‘Because I’ve gotta support the girls. And because I’m a big fan of the Clintons.”

3. Is Randi going to go on a screed
about celebrity and supporting people just because of gender.

And where was Madonna's "gotta support the girls" for Carol Mosley-Braun?

*sigh*

I don't care who she supports, but the double standards are as stunning to me as the first time I saw a cross burn in Mississippi in 1975.

29. Meh...I wouldn't go that far.
They speak to different audiences, sure, but there's some overlap. I bet there are some voters (young women and gay men, especially) who would take a second look at Hillary or look at her a little differently if Madonna publicly endorsed her, even if they didn't make their decision on that basis alone.

24. Oprah has infinitely more clout with ordinary people than Madonna
There is a difference in the endorsements.

What I find more amusing is that Maya Angelou is coming out in support of Clinton. Anyone who watches Oprah will find that infinitely more interesting.

Look, when you get into the voting both, only you can pull the lever...
While the Oprah endorsement clearly helped Obama get people to the stadium, he still has to sell himself.

But frankly, Oprah is a hell of a lot more cerebral and grounded than Madonna...

Don't think it will help Hillary in the long run.

Billboard reported that her 2006 Confessions Tour holds the record for the top-grossing concert tour by a female artist.<2>

According to both the 2007 Guinness Book of Records,<3> and Forbes, she is the top earning female singer in the world with an estimated net worth of over $325 million.

On September 27, 2007, she was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2001, the Guinness Book of World Records listed Madonna as the "World’s Most-successful Female Musician".<4>

Any issue I have seen (and, no, I have never bought one) with Oprah on it, she looks, younger, prettier and thinner than she does on her show and on stage. Does she drop 40 pounds before they shoot her for the cover? Does she have a face-lift? Or, more than likely, do they alter her image and shave off un-wanted pounds and wrinkles?

50. "Ray of Light"
I love that one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFzeDExYPbw

Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder
Do my tears of mourning sink beneath the sun
Shes got herself a universe gone quickly
For the call of thunder threatens everyone

Chorus:

And I feel like I just got home
And I feel
And I feel like I just got home
And I feel

Faster than the speeding light shes flying
Trying to remember where it all began
Shes got herself a little piece of heaven
Waiting for the time when earth shall be as one

(chorus)

Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light

(verse)

And I feel
Quicker than a ray of light
Then gone for
Someone else shall be there
Through the endless years

Shes got herself a universe
Shes got herself a universe
Shes got herself a universe

And I feel
And I feel
And I feel like I just got home
And I feel

Quicker than a ray of light shes flying
Quicker than a ray of light Im flying

I'm not sure any celebrity really does. But it's just not true that Madonna is no longer musically relevant. Her last two tours were incredibly successful, her albums sell extremely well, and like her or not, she's still a force in the entertainment business.

I've been to a few of her shows and she draws quite a varied audience. A lot of young people, as well as a lot of us middle-aged folks. It's a very interesting demographic.

Of course, any perfomance by Madonna for Hillary's campaign would have to be tactful, which I'm sure is possible.

Not really sure how I feel about this possibility. On the one hand, I believe the size of the crowds she could pull would be way beyond anything Oprah did for Obama. On the other, she's not exactly a G rated material girl, and that could end up being a negative.

Madonna was asked on the red carpet at her husband's move premiere, who she supported in the presidential race. She said, "Hillary Clinton". They took this quote and ran with it. Don't be fooled.

Another funny exchange between Madonna and Guy at the premiere in front of the press:

You’re more of a hip-hop guy?
RITCHIE: “No is the answer to that.”
MADONNA: “He’s an Irish-folk-song guy.”
RITCHIE: “I like republican, political …”
MADONNA: “No, not republican, baby. That’s different here.”

Yes, that’s different in the U.S.
RITCHIE: “Oh, okay. We don’t like Republicans, then.”

101. Madonna can endorse who she likes, and I have no problem with it....
she endorsed my guy the last time, and it brought him a lot of dough, but also a lot of ridicule...because the media decided that Madonna should not speak on the issue of politics, even if Bo Derek does.

Celebrity endorsements are a 2 edge sword sometimes, depending on how the media want to interpret it.

Personally, I admire Madonna, considering how pop stars appear and then disappear almost as quickly most of the time. She's been able to really optimize her career and she's not finished yet. I respect how she was able to mold her career without relying on some Svengali!

Madonna and I are the same age, and she damn near looks almost has good as I do, and that's another reason that I like her and Sharon Stone! :)

I don't see the downside in Madonna endorsing Hillary except for the fact that the media will be saying stuff like...."good it did Wes Clark last time around"....."yuk, yuk, yuk". Since I hate the media, I always destest when they arrogantly laugh at others, as though they are so much better.

125. I don't think she should butt out
but that thread is coming soon to a forum near you. If she does stump for Hillary, you can bank on it.

:hi:

128. Oh god of course it will.
More slams on Madonna.

Maybe that's why I love Hillary so much. She, like Madonna gets slammed and fights back.

Go MO!!

135. Judging by her fake accent, you'd think she is from England.

139. And I will never understand why
no one rags on Anna Mae Bullock's "fake" accent to save my life.

Look, Madonna's husband is British. There's going to be some accent assimilation.

I lived in New York for 15 years and I've picked up an accent. It happens. My husband is from Ohio. He used to travel to Stockholm all the time for work. He quickly picked up vocal inflections and dialect just to accommodate a sense of similarity.

154. You mean like how Hillary talks "black" when she goes to Alabama?
"just to accommodate a sense of similarity"

And here was me thinking it was a desperate attempt at reaching out to black voters. :eyes:

145. Hillary's new campaign song: "You Must Love Me"
I am probably one of the biggest Madonna fans here on DU.

She has worked with some talented producers and made some amazing records.

Like A Prayer = one of the best albums of the 1980s
Ray of Light = one of the best albums of the 1990s
Confessions on a Dancefloor = one of the best albums of this century so far.

Madonna has had more hits than any other woman in music history.

But the idea that she can help Hillary in the primaries is a total joke.

At least Oprah Winfrey is known for talking about things that happen in the real world.

Madonna is known for her X-rated dance routines and controversial lyrics.

Maybe "sleep" doesn't actually describe it?

157. Not good
Madonna is not respected the same way Oprah is. Oprah is the biggest female celeb, period. She's done wonderful things to help people out and has an amazing angelic aura, like Mother Teresa. Madonna on the other hand...
