Democrats blast Bush’s Vietnam comparison
Democrats blast Bush’s Vietnam comparison
By Klaus Marre
August 22, 2007

Democrats Wednesday strongly rejected President Bush’s comparison of the Vietnam War to the conflict in Iraq, saying that drawing parallels is inaccurate and irresponsible.

Bush, in a speech to the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, used the example of the Vietnam War to show the possible consequences of withdrawing troops from Iraq. The president said that millions of people “paid the price” when the U.S. left Vietnam.

But Democratic leaders insisted that was a false comparison.

“Invoking the tragedy of Vietnam to defend the failed policy in Iraq is as irresponsible as it is ignorant of the realities of both of those wars,” said Sen. John Kerry (Mass.), the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate.

Democrats were also quick to point out that the White House had in the past rejected comparisons between the wars in Iraq and Vietnam. Among others, they point to a statement from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who said during a visit to Vietnam in 2006 that “historical parallels of that kind are, I think, not very helpful, and I don’t think they happen to be right” when asked to compare the conflicts.

1. Yeah, and the real correlation of the two is a flawed foreign policy and a failed leadership.
(aside) To say Mr. Bush's comments today were a little bizarre would be an understatement and, as Kerry notes, a disservice to history.

2. This man is on crack.
It's becoming more and more apparent: the man is out of his mind. The people handling him are out of their minds. Just remember that, and you won't be surprised with what comes out of his mouth next.

3. No, no.
This is simply feigned outrage on the part of Democrats in response to the Republicans' feigned outrage over remarks Obama made about Pakistan which was in response to Democrats' feigned outrage over Mark Foley which was in response to the Republicans' feigned outrage over a blow job. See. It's Bill Clinton's fault. It always is.

(don't ya'll have any smilies to indicate that this post is totally tongue in cheek and not to be taken seriously?)

9. Let's stick to Iraq Mr. Bush. Stop trying to change the subject.
Is every war Bush didn't serve in Vietnam?

11. I DO love that I've seen numerous times a speech from earlier days
where the dim one said there's absolutely no way anyone can compare Iraq to VN. :eyes:

12. That's good.
Thanks, I feel better knowing he is not getting completely away with it.

I did see on the ABC site at noon that the main story was something like "New Bush Talking Point. Bush Comparing Vietnam to Iraq". I thought, "Talking Point?" Are they actually daring to match Bush's cynicism with skepticism?

13. Millions of Vietnamese died as a RESULT of the US occupation of their country
Vietnam, after winning the war, now has higher percentages of economic growth than the US does (over twice as high last year).
