RALEIGH, N.C. — Though John Edwards is far ahead of the fundraising numbers he posted during his first run for the White House, the former North Carolina senator is having trouble keeping up with the breakneck pace set by his rivals this time around.
Edwards, whose campaign raised more than $14 million in this year's first quarter, is on pace to pocket only about $9 million by midnight Saturday, the reporting deadline for the second quarter.

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign said Thursday that she will raise roughly $27 million. Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson added the campaign expects Illinois Sen. Barack Obama to "significantly outraise" the former first lady. Obama raked in $25.7 million in the first quarter.
Edwards officials downplayed the numbers, characterizing them as "a meaningless fundraising arms race" and noting the campaign is only shooting to raise $40 million by next year's Iowa caucuses.
"Right now, we feel good about where were at because we're ahead of that pace," said Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz.
Obama's campaign has also touted its huge number of individual donations. By Saturday night, the campaign hoped to have received donations from about 250,000 individuals since the beginning of the year.
Edwards' campaign hoped to post a year-to-date mark of about 95,000 individual donors by Saturday's deadline.
