Are you a 'gut' liberal, a 'heart' liberal, a 'head' liberal, or a ..........

Let me explain that crappily written thread title.

Some definitions I've made up:

'Gut' liberal: a person who instinctively takes a liberal position on most things, without even having to think it through. It centers mostly on reaction to policy rather than its impact on real people.

'Heart' liberal: Pretty close to a 'gut' liberal, but distinct in that in comes more from an emotional concern for people rather than policy.

'Head' liberal: Takes a position only after having given a matter a great deal of thought and/or done a great deal of research.

I recognize that quite likely no one is purely one or another of these, but broadly speaking, where do you see yourself?

5. Hmm, from these choices, I pick mostly "head" liberal, with a good

share of "ass" liberal. Not to be confused with the mythical "head-up-the-ass" liberal that Repubs like to talk about.

8. All 3 but mostly

2 and 3. My heart pretty much rules my brain. It is impossible for my brain to convince my heart that something is right when it seems to hurt others then the gut kicks in and my brain is overwhelmed. I use my brain mainly for evaluation because of my heart and gut. I have learned to trust them, they are more often right than wrong.

I think we all need all 3 to work together but each of us will have different ways we use them. That is what makes this all so wonderful even if frustrating at times.

10. It 's a combination...

At the "heart of it"...is a gut instinct that when you hear a Repub say something...it sounds off. Just listen to anything they say...this includes any current member of congress...the RushLimbo, O'Reilly, Hannity, Coulter......and of course VPer and The Shrub. Virtually any and everything they say is a "spin" or a half truth...and my gut tells me they are hiding something.

I then do a little research...that proves my gut is correct...which then raises all kinds of concerns for people who are affected. They could be our soldiers, the people of a country we attack, the poor, the middle class....those with kids, those without jobs or those who are about to lose them...among others...and maybe most of all my kids and gkids.

Result...Even though I consider myself a conservative thinker....I guess I am a liberal. WHich makes me then ask: How can ANYONE be a Republican today?

what I think they call a "knee-jerk lefty", most of the time.When I come to DU, I often find people saying the same things that occured to me when I've heard the latest Republican outrage.

I like the idea of 'foot' liberal, myself. Walks their feet right to the polls and votes their views.

13. I'm not sure one is even a true liberal unless one is all three.

Nor am I sure where I'd place myself. Though I was never neocon, I started out as a Disraelian conservative. Disraeli once declared, "Power has only one duty, to secure the social welfare of the people." I became troubled with what conservatism was turning into, so I left the movement and, as I observed the horrors and inequities of unchecked capitalism throughout the world, was so repulsed and sickened that I moved progressively left, until I'm pretty much a social democrat verging on socialist now. I firmly believe that a liberal is primarily a social democrat who is dragging his feet, while a socialist is a liberal in a hurry. The difference is in the urgency.

Now, I don't know whether this change came about as a result of work from my head, heart, or gut, but since the head controls everything including emotion and instinct, and since it happened over a period of years, I'm theorizing that it was my head.

...but I usually find that my instinctive liberalism holds up pretty well to intellectual scrutiny and to moral consideration.

15. I seem to be a function Liberal. I like to think of myself preferring

what I see as functional politics with a max liberal trend. What I hate about Bush's policies is they lack functional qualities because they are consistently minimally liberal/Democratic. IMO this leads to hate and more war sooner or later.

Every iota of my being is Liberal, as far as I'm concerned. I got more pragmatic for a few years, but then the reality of Katrina brought me back to my roots in a nan-second. I believe I am, today, more radically Liberal than I have been in my whole life.
