A farmer who blamed "rural terrorists" for trying to scupper plans for a wind farm killed himself because of opposition to the scheme, an inquest concluded today.

Shortly before his death, vandals felled a £100,000, 279ft (85m) tall anemometer being used to test wind speed at the proposed wind farm site at Marshland St James.

"We at Flat would again like to make it clear that our campaign has been one of peaceful protest," a spokesman for the Fenland Landscapes Against Turbines group said.

"We have ensured that everything we have done has been lawful."
