State Climatologist - Oklahoma Needs To Start Planning Now For Dry Years On Horizon - Tulsa World
Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 12:45 PM by hatrack
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma can expect less rainfall in coming years, and the state should start planning for that drought now, state climatologist Ken Crawford says. The Oklahoma Climatological Survey director told a Senate panel last week that the state will see warm periods earlier that will last longer.

While some debate the reality of global warming, a recent statement released by the Climatological Survey starts with the premise that climate warming is unequivocal and will create a cascade of climatic shifts which could affect Oklahoma's climate. The Senate Energy and Environment Committee is studying the management of surface and groundwater systems and how to increase the water supply.

Sen. Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant, co-chairman of the panel, said that whatever lawmakers do should benefit the entire state. Action taken should not trade one set of problems for another, Gumm said.

EDIT

With warmer temperatures, residents will use more water, Crawford said. If current trends continue, the state will pull water out of aquifers faster than it can be replenished in a warmer-climate scenario, Crawford said. There are "no new fresh water sources on the horizon," Crawford said.

118805, Inhofe (R - Pleistocene) Vows To Block Greenhouse Gas Legislation

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, who has called global warming a hoax, says he will block a bipartisan Senate bill that would limit greenhouse gas emissions.

Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, is Congress' most vocal skeptic of the idea that human activity is responsible for global warming.

Yesterday, during a lengthy speech on the Senate floor, he said the media, environmental groups and "Hollywood" liberals, among others, have exaggerated the causes and effects of global warming.

The Oklahoman reported on Inhofe's speech from its Washington bureau. Inhofe maintains that a growing number of scientists are agreeing with him and have questioned computer models used to predict future temperatures and water levels.

2. Advance planning doesn't mesh too well with the coming Rapture.
Also, it tends to interfere with those ever-increasing quarterly profits.
