**June 5th MFM Update (and beyond!)**
Time for a new thread!

I got off the phone a few minutes ago with our beloved MFM.

He sounded great!

However, he'd had an adventure today, but now is in a vastly improved condition.

Before, when he'd cough, he would have some bleeding out the chest incision, and he had a lot of pain from the edges of his sternum (breastbone) as they rubbed together.

Today, he went back to surgery, and they stopped the bleeding, and they fixed the sternum so it wouldn't rub, at least in the short term.

Tomorrow he will be seen by a plastic surgeon who will do yet another surgery on his sternum. He will somehow use a muscle around the sternum to stop the edges from rubbing, on a permanent basis. This surgery will happen in the next day or two, and of course we will update all of you once that's happened.

We talked about laptops, and those of you who are interested in getting in on that, PM me. I will also be looking for advice on which brand to get. Details via PM.

Oh yes...one last thing: He wanted me to tell you that this plastic surgery will also give him the new smaller penis he's always wanted...;)

thanks Peggy! I'm working on getting another old friend of his back in the picture - they kind of lost contact and this person has a lot of their own health problems but is going to try to go see him this week. Might even have some good info for helping with various advocacy issues with the ins co and so forth.

I also remembered another person I might be able to get to go see him, from our old radio battle days.

22. **Tuesday afternoon Update**
Just got off the phone with MFM. He was tired and we only talked briefly...

He told me that Thursday AM, he will be back in surgery to get his sternum fixed so its edges won't rub anymore and hurt him. They will wrap the muscles there around the two halves to soften the rough edges.

And I told him that Thursday, he will be the proud owner of a new laptop! He was soooo pleased.

A Very Special Thank You to HopeHoops! His computer expertise really got me into a good place!

If anyone wants to help defray my expense, please PM me. A couple of folks already have, and I appreciate the support!

And regretful news that MFM has to go through surgery again, probably due to the fact that his sternum wasn't properly set during the first surgery.

But -- MFM will be getting his laptop, THANKS TO YOU!

Please send me a PM with info about how you'd like the money. I'd like to send it asap.

Just had a brief conversation with MFM!

He sounded tired, but good. I finally remembered to tell him how much we all miss him, and he asked me to tell you that he misses all of you terribly too.

I had a bit of bad news re the laptop: The delivery won't happen till Friday. But he said that's probably better, since he will be out of it tomorrow, due to his sternum repair surgery.

He really is looking forward to being back on line with all of us!

37. Great news, CP...
...didn't make much sense for him to get the laptop on the same day as the surgery anyway. But I firmly believe that once he wraps his grubby little mitts around it, it will give him 100 times the "therapeutic value" of any pill the doctors could give him. That boy needs to start POSTING.

36. ***Thursday Pre-Op Update***
Just got off the phone with MFM. He was scheduled for 7 this morning but his blood wasn't cooperating fully, so has been rescheduled for 2 this afternoon (AZ time). Sync your timepieces and fire up your vibe generators then, if you are so inclined!

He said a few more days there and then they would be moving him back to the rehab place. I know he likes UMC a lot but I think he is getting ready to get out of there! It was a fast call as I think they were torturing him with something or other as hospitals tend to do (it is so busy there as it is a teaching hospital so you never lack for "entertainment" anyway  )

52. ***Friday/Saturday Update***
Sorry I didn't post last night, I was too beat. June is just about the hardest month around here.

I called MFM last night and we spoke briefly. He said he was doing better, although it comes and goes - good spells and bad ones, but the good ones are getting better. They have him wrapped up kind of tight so he said it is a little disconcerting to breathe. He is really happy to get the laptop, but too weak to lift it or do much. He probably needs somebody to help get it set up but I can't get in there for at least a couple more days if then. Hopefully he will regain some energy/strength and be able to handle it on his own. Seems like it shouldn't be too difficult, although I don't have much experience with laptops. Imagine a battery might need to be charged, but surely there is a way to run it off AC???

He said they would probably be sending him back to the rehab place pretty soon. That will be such a good sign!

57. With MFM's magnetic personality & charm, someone there at the hospital
would set it up for him, providing he was ready & able to use it. I can imagine how much his ribs must hurt; he may not be able to get in a comfortable position to use it yet -- don't want to undo the purpose of that last surgery.

Maybe when he gets to rehab he'll be ready for it.

I've also been thinking how busy your life is, Kali, & so I appreciate all the more how you've been helping MFM & keeping us informed. Thanks SO MUCH!

59. ***Sunday update***
Edited on Sun Jun-12-11 07:37 PM by Kali
Just got off the phone. He said yesterday was a pretty good day - not so busy in the hospital so he actually got some rest. Today he had some kind of brief "episode" that felt so strange he used the call button for help and when they came in they said we already saw it on the monitor and already called the Dr. When the Doc showed up, he reminded MFM to think about what he has been through the last few weeks, didn't seem too worried about it.

In fact, things seem to be progressing so well again they are talking about sending back to the rehab place maybe as early at Tuesday!

He says he just gets too tired, physically and mentally to try to work with the new laptop and nobody there really has time (and not their job) to help so he is probably just going to wait until they move him. I said just poke along slow and you may get it. I am going to post a thread in the AZ forum and see if there might be somebody to help or somebody that might know somebody. I told him if nothing else make it one of the rehab "projects" to get it set up and learn to use it.

And if that doesn't work I can go try myself, but I'm sure not qualified as I have never done anything other than hook up my dial-up desktop. My problem is I just can't get into Tucson very often and this week has me going in other directions along with all the other usual stuff.

Anyway enough about me, he is doing better and we will get him back on line ASAP! Hopefully by midweek at least!

edit: at least 3 typos, sheesh

Anyway, I'm glad the staff saw it and acted on it. Good that the doc is aware too, besides not being worried.

Rehab sounds good, as long as he is really ready.

67. I think it's possible to send him an email if anyone wants.
I looked on the Tucson UMC site and you can do that if you know his other-world name or room number. I'm not suggesting everyone do that but I did and it might be nice to see a familiar name or two.

What a lot to go through. Hope he's off to rehab today.

68. and you can PM me for that info - he gave the OK to give it out
BUT (I talked to him again last night) they are still talking about moving him back to the rehab place today or tomorrow so if you want to send something to UMC do it today.

Hopefully he will be here "in person" by tomorrow afternoon or Thursday morning! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

69. ***Wednesday June 15, damn it Update***
talked to him briefly a little while ago, still at UMC - still having some blood chemistry and drainage problems. He couldn't talk long becasue they were going to make him get up and walk. Trying to get his lungs in better shape, I think. He said he gets real tight in the chest at night and is having trouble sleeping.

He sounded ok in terms of breath and strength of voice, but I know he must be getting sick and tired of this - it has been a month!

The move back to the rehab place is on a day by day wait and see status so we pretty much don't know until it happens.

:-(

70. Oh damn.
I'm really sorry to hear this.

It wasn't supposed to be like this!

But I understand. He has several health problems, and those complicate things.

Do you think it would be OK if I tried to call tomorrow?

Thanks for the update, Kali...

71. yes, give it a try
I have bad luck during the day - but you seem to catch him better, and I think his energy level is probably better then too.

72. Yes, he's GOT to walk, move the fluids around and out,
MANDATORY to avoid pneu.....

Sorry about this, but glad his still in hospital (assuming they can deal with blood and drainage better than Rehab place.)

Thanks, Kali

74. Two major surgeries done so close together would be hard on anyone.
That tightness in his chest & the drainage problem (not enough of it?) must be from bloated lungs crowding his chest. It must really be painful for him to move around, but he needs to work the fluids out.

Damn.

81. It has been a month- just seems sooo long
and must seem so much more so to MFM.
I hope he is getting over the lung and blood chemistry roadblocks and it will soon be smooth cruising for him to a steady, strong recovery.

I did read your latest update from yesterday where you said that he sounded much better- that's encouraging.

76. talked to him again this evening
he sounded a LOT better. Said maybe Saturday to rehab, but still playing by ear - was getting tired of pokes - said it wore him out today - two people at the same time trying to find a vein...ouch.

Forgot to tell you guys he said last night he could feel the vibes...so keep 'em up if you can.
