35. Mil pessoas protestam contra violência no Rio de Janeiro
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 08:26 PM by StefanX
http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/Rio/foto/0,,9769495,00.jpg

http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/Rio/0,,MUL19134-5606-133,00.html

Hundreds of people participated this Saturday morning (the 7th) in a protest against violence on Copacabana beach. Organized by the NGO "Rio for Peace", the protest aimed to unite a thousand volunteers to symbolize the violent deaths in Rio.

Dressed in black, the protesters laid down on the boardwalk of Copacabana, to count the deaths.

===

Publishing this because I think this would be a very effective way to protest in the US, against the war... If enough Americans could manage to move from the couch to the pavement...

70. One problem with morse code is that there are numerous different
ways of presenting it. For example, there are translators online, but they're generally not going to read it the way I put it.

Comment ça-va?

Ça va bien merci.

There. That's better.

80. I have, believe me. We go there for a couple of weeks every year to visit Mrs R's cousin.
They're much less hostile about speaking English than they were in the 1970s when I went there a lot; at least if I exhaust my mangled French before asking that question.

And I do mean MANGLED French...a combination of the Asian Colonial French that was left in Viet Nam, and what I've picked up of Mrs R's Creole, and my Southern accent from having lived in Texas. No wonder thay can't understand me.

Montreal is one of only two cities I've ever thought I'd like to live in (the other being Boston).

84. Really?
I was raised in Montreal and miss it terribly even though I'm only 2 hours away by car (I live in Ottawa now). It's true that MTL is less hostile to non French speakers than it used to be. Many of my English friends tell me the same thing. I think it's because the younger generation is much less politicised and less separatist. Even though I am now 45 years old, I was never a separitist because I realised that Quebec needs English Canada more than they realised at that time.

Funny you should say that about Boston........I've been to many cities in the USA and Boston is the only one I would ever consider living in. I really love that city.

85. Oh, yeah, the separatism seems to be long-gone. Mrs R's cousin's husband is a great
defender of Quebecois rights, but even he admits that the separatists were misguided.

And the state of the ecomomy in greater Montreal would seem to confirm that...the place is BOOMING, in no small part because corporations are no longer nervous about having a presence there.

And Boston, yes. My mother's family was from there, and every time I go there, I am reminded of how much I like that city, and that I don't go there enough.

143. I think that the younger generation of Québecers
is less hostile to the Anglos because we've never experienced what Québec was before the Quiet Revolution. I remember seeing old editorial cartoons form the Montréal Matin, or Le Devoir that depicted bosses and people who held power as rich Anglophones, exclusively. I found it humorous, because my generation never knew that.

101. You get the prize
"The Most Gratuitous Use of the Word "Belgium" in a Serious Screenplay. It's very prestigious."

"The most gratuitous use of which word?" asked Arthur, with a determined attempt to keep his brain in neutral.

"Belgium," said the girl, "I hardly like to say it."

"Belgium?" exclaimed Arthur.

A drunken seven-toed sloth staggered past, gawked at the word and threw itself backward at a blurry-eyed pterodactyl, roaring with displeasure.

"Are we talking," said Arthur, "about the very flat country, with all the EEC and the fog?"

"What?" said the girl.

"Belgium," said Arthur.

"Raaaaaarrrchchchchch!" screeched the pterodactyl.

"Grrruuuuuurrrghhhh," agreed the seven-toed sloth.

"They must be thinking of Ostend Hoverport," muttered Arthur. He turned back to the girl.

"Have you ever been to Belgium in fact?" he asked brightly and she nearly hit him.

"I think," she said, restraining herself, "that you should restrict that sort of remark to something artistic."

"You sound as if I just said something unspeakable rude."

"You did."

In today's modern Galaxy there is of course very little still held to be unspeakable. Many words and expressions which only a matter of decades ago were considered so distastefully explicit that, were they merely to be breathed in public, the perpetrator would be shunned, barred from polite society, and in extreme cases shot through the lungs, are now thought to be very healthy and proper, and their use in everyday speech and writing is seen as evidence of a well-adjusted, relaxed and totally un****ed-up personality.

So, for instance, when in a recent national speech the Financial Minister of the Royal World Estate of Quarlvista actually dared to say that due to one thing and another and the fact that no one had made any food for a while and the king seemed to have died and most of the population had been on holiday now for over three years, the economy was now in what he called "one whole joojooflop situation," everyone was so pleased that he felt able to come out and say it that they quite failed to note that their entire five-thousand-year-old civilization had just collapsed overnight.

But even though words like "joojooflop," "swut," and "turlingdrome" are now perfectly acceptable in common usage there is one word that is still beyond the pale. The concept it embodies is so revolting that the publication or broadcast of the word is utterly forbidden in all parts of the Galaxy except for use in Serious screenplays.

There is also, or _was_, one planet where they didn't know what it meant, the stupid turlingdromes.

"I see," said Arthur, who didn't, "so what do you get for using the name of a perfectly innocent if slightly dull European country gratuitously in a Serious Screenplay?"
